I notice that this thread seems plopper and bot free so far (I hope MNHQ won'r ban me for pointing out a lack of trolls 🤔). Clearly stepping outside the anglosphere has it's benefits.

It’s a very good argument for our next thread title to be in Dutch.

I’m up for Dutch (and a range of languages). Cones with the added benefit of interesting linguistic sidebars.

BIWI · 30/11/2025 11:57

My goodness, Google Translate is doing a lot of work today Grin

BIWI · 30/11/2025 11:58

谢天谢地,我们至今还没被人拜访过。

For tomorrow's Rachel Reeves Rapture Day

countrygirl99 · 30/11/2025 12:16

I could contribute Finnish. I would need to run it past my DIL first as Google translate struggles with Finnish and the results can be hilarious.

What a great thread this is, I feel so glad to know about it.
I've been out for a lovely sunny but cold walk and think on reflection. RR rattled LK this morning by staying calmer and I think it has paid off.
Never underestimate Sir Keir. When you think what they inherited , my goodness.
Loving the Welsh (don't know any) great that it has brought new posters on and would love the next one to be a Dutch title. (Don't know any either but DH worked most of his life for a Dutch company.)

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 30/11/2025 12:37

Following a previous discussion here about the CofE potentially becoming a home for the 'flag shaggers'...
Intersessions today, done by a retired NHS worker (long standing congegation member).
Under things to be thankful for were 'the sound of her English neighbours'. The fact that she then mentioned her purring cat in no way excused the first comment.
I've complained to the Church Warden, as have others. Unimpressed...

PickAChew · 30/11/2025 12:41

DH has been working with Dutch and Swedish companies but he only knows enough to understand roadside warnings and error codes. He's not a natural linguist! (Though I've had to use him to translate pitmatic for me. That can be impenetrable.)

That is awful. She does know Jesus wasn't English?

Karistyleaftea · 30/11/2025 12:48

@PickAChew Grandfather and uncles were North east miners.
I know a lot of their words but far from all of them!

placemats · 30/11/2025 12:50

It's all double to me but I'm not translating it.

My sister and I are going on a Mediterranean holiday next year, most likely Sicily and Italian mainland. Going to have to brush up on my Italian.

Most popular holiday destination for the Dutch is Germany.

Deafnotdumb · 30/11/2025 12:51

I am not a linguist (except in BSL), but loving all the different languages on here.

Regarding the screams over the budget, it's manufactured outrage. The news outlets can't just report facts any more; there has to be some species of crisis to make it newsworthy and that's all they've got.

I'm relieved our politicians are (mostly) boring and in it for the service instead of the grift. Any time I get too morose over it, I just reread the COVID enquiry and remember what a shit show Johnson was. Or look across the Atlantic where it's abuse via Truth Social.

cardibach · 30/11/2025 13:00

I had a supply contract in a school who did a unit on BSL with all the Y7 classes. Brilliant idea. Someone at my bookclub is a BSL interpreter too. I’d love to learn it.

Saucery · 30/11/2025 13:07

I did BSL levels 1&2 years ago, but am very rusty now!

I liked her defence from Sharon White. I think Kuensberg was expecting her to put the boot in and she was really disappointed that she didn’t. Morgan’s such an old dinosaur, was he really the best they could do?

TheOnlyMrsW · 30/11/2025 14:04

Very late to the thread, Welsh tax from Trecco Bay for me, splendid few days - you know you've had a good time when you come away with no voice.
@Evenstar sorry to hear your news, hugs and Flowers to you.

@BIWI hope DH is home and recovering comfortably.
I've been away from MN mostly while we've been away, not sure I want to venture too far tbh. Off to catch up

Will Hayward has done an outstanding report on Reform in Wales. If you’re interested in Welsh politics, his newsletter is well worth following. There are some real gems. I haven’t had time to read it all yet but part one was enough to give me the heebie geebies.

I’m up for a bit of Dutch. I love the Netherlands. We go at least once a year but I’m afraid my Dutch is limited to ‘Bedankt’.

Special report: Who are Reform in Wales?

We dived into the wild world of Reform UK in Cymru

pointythings · 30/11/2025 14:27

I think we have enough established cloggies here for a sound Dutch title.

I have just been on a lovely walk in the dunes, followed by proper pannenkoeken. And my car is loaded with Dutch goodies (alas nothing perishable thanks to Brexit).

ilovesooty · 30/11/2025 15:35

DuncinToffee · 30/11/2025 10:41

The screams started the day she was appointed.

And even before that in terms of the Labour Party in general. Not so much screams as relentless drip drip drip attack.

ilovesooty · 30/11/2025 15:36

PandoraSocks · 30/11/2025 11:02

I would support a Dutch title next time.

Me too. Since I speak Dutch I'll probably understand it 😁

The sceamers are getting so boring now. Anyone who isn't a six-figure + earner is a feckless wastrel according to them. Even then if you are in the public sector and a high earner you are still a feckless wastrel.

I would hope - with it's entire history - the one institution that would be immune to extremism is the C of E.

It's entire credo has been built on banality in the most positive way.

I'm an atheist, but quite happy the C of E is our state religion.
