Marina Hyde has disappointed me a few times lately.

And me - and the majority of Guardian readers if the BTL comments are anything to go by.

DuncinToffee · 03/12/2025 11:45

She is a columnist who needs material

Did they say who they think will replace them?

They didn't think any of the touted main players were desirable candidates. Thought that no one in cabinet was leading the pack or had any plan that separates them from Starmer. Didn't seem to think that there were any obvious rising stars or anyone with any sort of fire in their bellies. 😔

They thought Andy Burnham needed to regroup and reassess after embarrassingly fizzling out at conference but agreed that he would be back - Needs a constituency though.

They also agreed Angela Rayner would be back in some capacity. (Soonish?)

Wes Streeting was probably the closest to getting any 'praise'. And he definitely wants it whatever he protests.

Both were aghast that Ed Milliband polls well with party members.

Spandauer · 03/12/2025 12:20

Apologies - I've been misspelling Pippa Crerar's name.

Oh. Farage has just tweeted this:

Succinct and to the point. Hard to disagree with him on some elements of this too!

DuncinToffee · 03/12/2025 13:04

A lot of that went to legal costs defending the Whatsapp gate.

I wonder how much Johnson has cost the taxpayer in overall legal costs.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj9yepzl1rjo

What a disgraceful headline for the BBC to write. The article is basically a puff piece on behalf of the Taxpayers Alliance. Shameful.

Ah BBC, never change.

An inquiry set up Tories, run within the parameters & guidelines developed & agreed by the Tories and which has involved a great number of Tories requiring additional legal advice (after conveniently losing their phones).

And what does the headline indicate - that today’s government is responsible for their mess.

Pathetic.

DuncinToffee · 03/12/2025 13:27

I see that Badenoch went with the chess thing in PMQs Confused

I am doing my level best, whenever socially appropriate, to say to people to try and look behind the headlines. On the BBC or wherever.
Maybe have a little read around certain political figures'
backgrounds and follow the money trail, see who funds them etc.
I am still absolutely convinced that Sir Keir will be our PM this time next year .
If Rachel Reeves isn't in her current role it will have been a lot to do with the concentrated misogynistic attacks which never ever seem to go away.
In my opinion.

PandoraSocks · 03/12/2025 13:48

I think they will both go in May if the results are as bad as predicted. But whoever replaces them will get the same treatment from the RW press.

Imagine if Reeves had been found to be anti-Semitic in her sixth form days and refused to apologise unreservedly. It would be all over the news every single day and rightly so. She would be metaphorically strung up. I am not a great fan of hers, but the shit being flung at her is just beyond all reason.

placemats · 03/12/2025 13:59

They will not go away next year post May. Those Labour councillors need to up their game and I know some who are doing it. It's local.

Welsh MPs need to support and be seen. I've no doubt that will happen. Same in Scotland, which is a different kettle of fish.

Edited

While I don’t want to even try to predict what will happen, I think it would be a mistake to change leader because of bad results in May at this stage of the electoral cycle. It would be pandering to the press and emulating Tory drama, especially since, as you say, it won’t make the attacks go away.
I really hope the PLP aren't swayed by all the nonsense.

BestIsWest · 03/12/2025 15:10

If Badenoch went with the ridiculous chess thing then that makes her even more ridiculous.

PandoraSocks · 03/12/2025 15:58

If I see one more PIP/Motability bashing thread I think I will lose my mind. I hide most of them now or just make a comment or two, but still.

I have been with my DH for 25 years. In that time, because of his disability, we have never once been able to walk along the street together holding hands. Do these fucking bastarding fuckwits not realise he and I would give his car and PIP away tomorrow to be able to do normal things like that?

Piggywaspushed · 03/12/2025 15:59

I am astonished they haven't got bored yet and moved on to a new 'target'.

Piggywaspushed · 03/12/2025 16:01

Why?

oh but they don't mean the genuine disabled.....

I noticed there is an increase of people supposedly working in the field too.

I think all you can do is as you do and hide those threads as there is no sensible discussion to be held.

It shouldn't be that way Flowers

As far as I could tell, it seemed to be that it was a 'once bitten, twice shy" reaction. That his evisceration by RW press the last time would be twice as bad this time. There wasn't really any discussion about his past leadership style or current policy beliefs - unfortunately the style of the evening's review of the political year didn't lend itself to in depth analysis.

And they thought he wouldn't actually want to do it again, that he seemed happy where he was.

cardibach · 03/12/2025 16:25

My Reform questionnaire has arrived. I shall ponder the best response - but it’ll be in Welsh.

cardibach · 03/12/2025 16:26

As an aside, does anyone know the Welsh for Fascist, traitorous grifter?

They are almost certainly right about the press - but the members can still like him!

Piggywaspushed · 03/12/2025 16:27

pandora, I have (not very) merrily had a reporting spree on the latest disabled bashing thread so solidarity , sister! We'll see what the all new tough MNHQ does.
