Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

Yes me

Me, too. Though it doesn't grate as much as "sweet treats".

Having emptied your dishwasher, fill the detergent dispenser space with citric acid then put on a hot wash to degrease and refresh the machine.

Blocked toilet?

A few large dollop of fairy liquid and flush the loo mucous times often does the trick

Mucous times! 😆

If you are struggling to open a new jar, tap the edges of the lid-once and fairly hard- on opposite sides, with a wooden spoon, and it will unscrew easily. I’m sure I saw this on Instagram, someone unlikely like Jo Whiley. It works for me though!

I slide a pointy knife under the rim to allow air to get in if a lid won't budge

I accidentally bought course ground coffee that's no good for my hario v60 pour over thing. I was gutted until I tried giving each portion of coffee grounds a quick blast in the blender before use

Back in the old days there used to be bleaching fields - particularly near cotton mills etc. it really does work!

I also tend to dry brighter coloured clothes inside out to lessen any fading.

Thanks! That’s something else I’ve learned today.

I’m still discovering new wonders to sudocream every year!

I used to get a really itchy rash under my boobs due to ill fitting bras and used to put Sudocream under them once or twice a week, it really stopped the itching and soothed the redness.

A professional bra fitting cured that one, Sudocream is now relegated to the cupboard in the bathroom and I don't have to use it any more, no longer have any rash or itchiness.

Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell

Have you read this?

Ooh! I haven't but I think I might, I love nostalgia stuff and I like Maggie O'Farrell's writing too. Cheers for the tip 😀

Sorry to derail, but do you think it would work for butternut squash as well?

My hack - jar lid related. Give it a sharp tap on the work surface/chopping board. The seal will pop and it unscrews easily.

I shove butternut squash in the oven till it's all brown and blistered

Its central theme is the 1976 drought, I loved it. Enjoy!

Lemsip left to stand cleans a tea-stained cup.

… Made a cup of lemsip which wasn’t drunk or cleared away for a couple of hours. Old tea stains washed out easily.

Does anyone have a way of cleaning sticky scorch marks from the bottom of an iron?

Katemax82 · 16/11/2025 11:29

To get my 19 year old son to do his own ironing I put all his clean clothes straight in a specific basket and give them to him. It's slightly eased the burden of ironing 200 tee shirts a week

Cutting onions - place a very wet paper towel next to them. Stops the stinging.

Keep said onions in the fridge

When hanging my daughter's school shirt out once there were weird brown splodges on it. I simply put a tiny bit of bleach on the stains only and it got rid of them completely.
Also you can buy vintage "Viz top tips" books on eBay. Make great presents for teenage sons

Somersetlady · 16/11/2025 11:39

Be careful. I read on a Mumsnet thread like this that putting sunglasses in the dishwasher made them like new.

Those Raybans are no more. They went cloudy…..🙈

I checked out the viz tips because a family member would appreciate them and found a Reddit favourite viz tips.

I’m going to be laughing a lot now, thanks!

Banging two pistachio nut shells together gives the impression a very small horse is approaching

Save money on binoculars by simply standing closer to the thing you want to look at.

Autumnleafdrop · 16/11/2025 11:42

Scorch marks on an iron can be removed with white magic blocks or Barkeepers Friend.

Hand sanitiser gets hair dye stains off your face and forehead.

Katemax82 · 16/11/2025 11:44

I get a lot of basic stuff from IKEA online. I don't live near one but do bulk orders every month or so. There freezer bags are amazing, washing up gloves don't break and their fake flowers are gorgeous. Also great for stuff you didn't know you need like a jar opener, and a silicone muffin tray I use when batch cooking baby food portions

I need a tip for peeling hard boiled eggs, even when I take them off the heat and straight into iced water I end up with so much egg stuck to the shell.

Add vinegar to the water before boiling

OneCanWonder · 16/11/2025 11:51

When washing and putting away bedding I pop an entire bed set (sheet, mattress/pillow protectors, duvet cover) into one pillowcase. Much easier to find and store.
Cannot remember where I came across this though.
