Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

if you want to sit up in bed and read or doom scroll

lay your dressing gown on the bed, right side up and just put your arms in the sleeves - keeps your arms warm without overheating actually wearing the dressing gown

Any top tips for removing eyelash dye stains from a brand new, fitted two weeks ago white sink?

You can use a cut up plastic bottle to help drain you washing machine filter

That is such a clever hack. I always spend half an hour trying to remember which baking tray/ tea tray fits under the gap, and even then it always leaks..

Keep said onions in the fridge

Realised this when I lived in another country that had no CH so the winter mornings could be really cold - after a shower and washing my hair I would put my dressing gown on, and then I’d dry my hair with the bedroom door closed so that the hairdryer really took the chill off the room. So much more comfortable to get dressed, do makeup in etc.

In winter I use my hairdryer to give a quick blast underneath the duvet before I get in. Takes the chill off the bed. Especially is the windows have been open all day.

Back in the old days there used to be bleaching fields - particularly near cotton mills etc. it really does work!

I also tend to dry brighter coloured clothes inside out to lessen any fading.

when my DC were babies i used cloth nappies. Some were the traditional style square terry ones, others were shaped terry ones. After cleaning, i used to hang them on the washing line to dry, and on sunny days they were brilliant white and no stains.

I made sure to do this before i passed them on to someone else.

Ouch! I’d try filling the sink with tepid water mixed with wash powder/stain remover and letting it sit for a few hours. If it doesn’t work, it would be pretty harmless.

fancytoes · 16/11/2025 12:00

Sofrito (chopped carrot onion and celery) from the frozen aisle is worth every penny. Almost comparable in price but time and labour savings is infinite!

Bar keeper’s friend might work?

Expired credit cards are perfect for plastering in small holes in walls and achieving an almost flat finish which requires less sanding.
They’re also very good at chipping off burnt on food in saucepans and oven trays.

Cherrysoup · 16/11/2025 12:03

On the sunshine removing stains issue, put stained Tupperware on a sunny windowsill (I put mine on a bench outside in summer). Stains miraculously disappear.

Autumnleafdrop · 16/11/2025 12:03

It’s easy to make your own soffritto and saves having to throw away unused celery sticks I find.

Have a big bucket type tub in the boot of the car for each child to put your kids things in when the come home from school. Then just carry this into the house each evening and straight to it's delegated place.
Put everything back into the tubs each evening after checking/washing lunch boxes etc and return to car in the morning.
This way nothing gets lost.
I read this on MN 20 years ago and it's served me well.

Brilliant. I also have a smaller plastic box for my son's lunch box and water bottle so they don't roll around in the boot

If you have too many lemons or limes to use up before they go bad, just pop them whole into the freezer. They keep perfectly in their own peels.
When ready to use take them out of the freezer and microwave them until soft enough to cut.

Edited

Even better is cutting into slices or wedges before freezing.

Or use them to clean your ninja speedi. Just use the steam function with just water and lots of lemon slices

Buy stuff in bulk to reduce cost / need / mental energy involved in buying it more frequently - my best examples of this are kids birthday cards and washing up liquid. Pack of 20 and 5l bottle. Similarly, don't buy a lot of disposable things like kitchen roll and find reusable equivalents (like tea towels). Saves a fortune as well as the associated hassle of having to buy it regularly.

Use pan lids to drain pan contents rather than using a colander (I only just realised this a few years ago).

If you have kids, keep a party box with cotton table cloths, plastic plates and cups for kids parties to save buying disposable versions every year. Long term it will save you money if you use every year, especially for multiple kids.

Our plastic plates etc. have been passed on to be used by the grandchildren - I used to use them for picnics too.

MayaPinion · 16/11/2025 12:18

If you have a cold or stuffy nose try putting a few splashes of Olbas Oil in your oil burner (the tea light candle and water type ones). It’s long lasting and really loosens everything up.

@OvenChickit will be the most delicious swede you've ever tasted. You won't even need butter!

I’d love to try this but how does it not explode?

Or just bang the edge of the jam jar lid on the side of a table.

Hand sanitiser gets turmeric stains out of a cheapy laminate worktop.

Something I read on Mumsnet a while ago: Always use a jam spoon. Sticking a knife into the jar of jam risks transmitting the breadcrumbs from your toast into the jam and that is why your jam turns mouldy.

To avoid large packets of crisps going stale, eat the whole packet in one sitting.

Crisp tip is brilliant one I have been using for years !!

Fairnair · 15/11/2025 23:29

You can hard boil eggs in an airfryer, 4 large eggs for 16 mins at 120 degrees centigrade . I have a Ninja dual drawer airfryer, and need to select the Bake setting to get the 120 temp.

I do this too

Katemax82 · 16/11/2025 12:39

Before going to bed wipe your kitchen sides and cupboard doors down with zoflora multi-purpose spray. It will still smell great in the morning

“To avoid large packets of crisps going stale, eat the whole packet in one sitting.”

Best tip so far.

Agree, it's very Viz magazine.

In my younger, naughtier days, I discovered an excellent hack for solving the issue of your cocaine going sticky.

It happened to us one night at a house party. My friend whipped out a pan and boiled some water. She emptied the coke onto a plate, took the water off the boil and popped the plate on top of the pan for about 15 seconds.

Problem solved! (Allegedly)

That's the same as keeping weed in the freezer. Life hacks I no longer need!

Talc rubbed into grease stains on clothes works very well. Had to do it this morning with a massive grease stain on my trousers.

Katemax82 · 16/11/2025 12:44

Half fill your kids water bottle and freeze it (not ones that have straws in obvs) the fill the rest with water so it stays cold all day at school. My son's water comes home with a chunk of ice still in it

Katemax82 · 16/11/2025 12:46

Another one. If you need to remove mould from the wall of a room a child is sleeping in or you just don't want to use really strong anti mould spray simply wash the wall with biological powder solution
