So many experts have been fired in the DOGE 'efficiency' drive that the US has hollowed out knowledge in many areas, resulting in ... inefficiency??

I'm also following the "our Cherished Christians" theme and the tattoo eyeliner-ed one and the Far Right's embrace of "Christian" values. I'll post link to a recent article if I can find it again.

As pointed out on Pod Save America, it appears that neither Trump or Vance seem to know the difference between testing nuclear weapons and testing weapons capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

Just what you want from the folk in charge of the big red button 🙄

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/11/2025 16:58

Given that Trump etc clearly know the square root of frod all about nuclear weapons as being different from nuclear powered devices, maybe it's as well if they've sacked all the people who could make them a nuclear weapon and thus wouldn't be able to launch any if they tried?

The complexity of a nuclear weapon is hard to overstate. Very few countries have been able to achieve it with their own resources.

North Korea has managed by starving it's population and possibly sneaking some help from China.

The fact a country as large and rich as Iran still hasn't managed the final stages tells you a lot.

JD Vance, Israel and MACA (Make America Christian Again).

The bottom line is a lot of money in US politics definitely stems from Israel friendly sources.

Most depressing thing I’ve read for a while. I have no hope for democracy in the US, it is already dead.

I can't help but recall most people think it was the cover up over Watergate that was the scandal. Not the bungled burglary.

jumpingthehighjump · 04/11/2025 05:55

That article is utterly depressing. Crime and breaking the law in plain sight

I don't understand why there isn't even one Republican senator uncomfortable with all of this. Does their position mean more to them than right and wrong?

I hadn’t thought of that. Very good, and even more depressing, point. We’re all doomed, DOOMED, I tell you!

Serpentstooth · 04/11/2025 07:19

Grim times, people, and worse to come if USA doesn't wake from its hypnotic trance. The government there has reached the point where they don't even bother with a cover up of their crimes against the People. Too busy covering Bigly's involvement with Epstein. We see you Bigly.

DH and I are convinced the US won't be able to pull back from the dismantling of government given there are another 4 years of this criminal administration still to go. Plenty of opinion pieces about how things could improve once Drumpf gets into the "lame duck" period at the end of his term but I think he'll be even worse during that time - nothing to lose. I think it's unlikely he will actually run again but it won't stop him stirring all the pots in the meantime to keep the election chaos going.

A line from the NYT David French piece resonated...

On a plain white poster board, a protester had written in big, black letters, “You try to fit it all on a sign.”

How I feel about these threads now. Can no longer fit it all in.

I wouldn't worry too much about Trump's nuclear aspirations as nobody seems to be taking it seriously. DH braced for the influx of enquiries from journalists that he usually gets following any news about nuclear issues. He hasn't had a single call this time

Well the senate has not supported Trumps tariffs. Presumably some of them want a shot at being POTUS next time.

CaveMum · 04/11/2025 10:44

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a countdown, even so it’s still a depressingly long way to go!

Day 288 of Trump 2.0
364 days until Midterms
1,099 days until 2028 election
1,173 days until Inauguration Day

I agree 100%. Shit made worse/started by Trump is happening all over the world.
Yet sometimes (rarely) I see a glimmer of a quieter, more thoughtful Trump, trying to answer a question honestly and it makes me wonder who Trump really is. Probably 99% greedy, narcissistic, bombastic grifter, and 1% human bean.

Big day at U.S. District Court in D.C. where Sean Dunn, the D.C. Sandwich Guy, is on trial for misdemeanor assault of a federal officer.

Border Patrol agent Gregory Lairmore is on the stand narrating surveillance video of the sammie toss.

'Now he’s struck me with the sandwich,' Lairmore says.

Border Patrol agent Lairmore testifies that he was not injured by the sandwich, but he felt the impact through his ballistic vest.

The sandwich came apart and "kind of exploded" on his chest upon impact, he says.

"I could smell the onions and mustard."

Weaponising hunger

Breaking:

Trump now says he will NOT abide by a federal judge's order to disburse SNAP benefits — despite the admin saying just yesterday it would partially fund November benefits.

He says SNAP benefits "will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government."

I wouldn't be getting on an intern flight anytime soon.

ABC News: The Department of Transportation might be forced to shut down the airspace in certain parts of the country if the government shutdown continues into next week, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Tuesday.

At this rate, there’ll be no Giving Thanks this year, if people are stranded at airports.. Surely at that point, they’ll realise it is Trump and the GOP’s fault? Oh, no, you’re right, they won’t.
