Mandani said "In this moment of darkness, New York will be the light"

Awaits the orange one's meltdown. He has threatened to remove federal funding if Mandani wins....

I’m getting Star Wars vibes.

CaveMum · 05/11/2025 10:05

My concern now is how the DNC take Mandami’s win. If they conclude from it that they need to lurch to the Left to win in 2026 they may make a fatal error. It’ll be the “coastal elites” all over again.

Maybe the bigger message is that the one-size-fits-all approach the Republicans have adopted can be overcome locally.

The things about extremists is they tend to be lazy. I can't see the Republican party being able to run 50 separate campaigns all centred around specific issues.

It's like Reform in the UK only have one tune.

Oh I hadn't realised Mamdani is the son of Mira Nair the film director!

She's the person who directed the adaptation of A Suitable Boy and the Vanity Fair with Reese Witherspoon. Love her work!

There are surprising pockets of progressively minded people all over the country, but I think you're right that it's all about the local flavour. Many people in the Midwest were traditionally labour Dems who have been badly affected by globalisation. They potentially could be brought back under leftist policies but with the right marketing.

placemats · 05/11/2025 11:23

Unfortunately Unions in the USA were given bad publicity despite the majority working for the common good. It's media manipulation. Horrible and pervasive.

Talkinpeace · 05/11/2025 12:01

I have issues with some of Mamdani's policies
and did not vote this time because I no longer have active connections to the city
BUT
as the person people can rally around he is brilliant

  • really good speaker
  • good New Yawk accent
  • no party baggage
  • cannot run for President
If the DNC are clever they will use him as the lighning rod to work out what sort of candidates to pick for 2028 (sadly I do not think they are clever)

cannot run for President

Why ?

Efacsen · 05/11/2025 12:11

Because he was born in Uganda?

SerendipityJane · 05/11/2025 12:20

And ?

CaveMum · 05/11/2025 12:31

SerendipityJane · 05/11/2025 12:20

And ?

Under current legislation you can only run for President if you are born in the USA.

Hence all the “birther” nonsense around Obama.

placemats · 05/11/2025 12:38

Having a strong Mayor of New York who is compassionate about the city trumps a presidential candidate.

I think he is far more of a threat to Project 2025 as a non candidate
than he would be if speculation could swirl

But that's all been repealed surely ? No one in enforcing it, so it's just a theoretical now.

No, this is a Constitutional requirement. It's not part of legislation. It would take a Constitutional amendment to change this.

Talkinpeace · 05/11/2025 13:21

No.

Project 2025 wants to stop anybody born outside the US standing for any office (except for Arnie)

Who enforces the constitution ?

Ah, yes. the body formerly known as SCOTUS. Currently missing in action, presumed paid off.

If your only hope of the constitution being anything more than wallpaper for the Trump palace at 1600 Pennsylvania Av. is SCOTUS, you may be in for a shock.

Spandauer · 05/11/2025 14:09

Mike Johnson about to get new instructions from his minder?

(Drumpf had a (pre-scheduled) meeting with all the Repug senators this morning)

You can bet this SCOTUS would take issue with a Democrat who doesn't meet the Constitutional requirements.

AcrossthePond55 · 05/11/2025 14:39

Hello all. Just dipping in to let you know that because of the passing of Prop 50, when the new district lines are effectuated in 2026 I will be living in a Dem district! I'm still sort of staying away from the antics of Hurricane Dipshit but slowly coming back to 'myself' as far as political involvement goes. And starting to rejoin 'our' thread is a start.

The results of the elections are heartening, but based on 2016 and 2024 I still tend to be skeptical of long term effects. The Dems still need to come up with a solid platform that will appeal to a broad range of voters. AND viable (and again, broadly appealing) candidates for the midterms as well as the 2028 General Election. This is absolutely critical to get people out to vote.

On the 'life front', DH and I are now separated. I am in a lovely flat, he is in the marital home. DH had always been quite a drinker, but it really never caused us any issues as he 'held his liquor' very well. But in a period of about 6 weeks he became a raging and verbally abusive alcoholic until I had to leave for my own sanity and emotional wellbeing. It's believed he has the beginnings of 'wet brain' but since he doesn't believe he's an alcoholic he refuses to seek any kind of treatment. I'm still in shock over it all but slowly coming to terms. Both our DC have gone completely NC with him and are my rocks in this storm. I still can't believe it's come to this after 38 years. But I refuse to dwell. Onwards and upwards.

Spandauer · 05/11/2025 14:48

Oh, @AcrossthePond55 I'm so happy to hear that you're surviving and moving forward with your 'new' life. I had been thinking about you.

Your input to the threads has been sorely missed.

Congrats on being in a blue district now! 💙

Hello, @AcrossthePond55. Welcome back! So sorry to hear of your trials and tribulations on the domestic front, but what good news about you being in i a Dem district from next year!

I completely agree with you when you say: "The results of the elections are heartening, but based on 2016 and 2024 I still tend to be skeptical of long term effects. I hope you continue to come to terms with your new life, I for one have very much missed your input on these threads, but quite understand your reluctance to deal with the orange toddler’s antics.

OrangeCrushes · 05/11/2025 14:55

@AcrossthePond55 It's so good to see you back!

What an awful situation with your DH, but so pleased that you have loving support in your children.

Looking forward to hopefully seeing more of you here again, to the extent that posting on a political thread a positive thing for you to do😊

Edit: you know me under another name and we had a DM conversation a while back after your DH fell ill

CaveMum · 05/11/2025 15:02

Lovely to see you again @AcrossthePond55, I’m sorry to hear how things have progressed but glad that you have a supportive network around you.
