Reeves lands badly with "ordinary" people simply because the media portray her badly.

She found away of raising 40bn for public services, 29bn of which has gone to the NHS.

"Catalogue of unforced errors" the only one i can see is the WFA.

But its hardly her fault that Labour policy was to go into the GE promising not to increase taxes at all.

Like i said, she acts within cabinet govt, any errors are not just on her.

Labours problems are solely to do with the conservatives, she has to find money for Defence, Prisons, NHS, Schools, Roads, Hotel contracts, Compensation scandals etc etc the list is endless.

All because the Cons the UK into the ground, with a combination of austerity and incompetence.

Torsten Bell is part of the team that advises Reeves, he would face exactly the same problems Reeves does & come up with the same solutions, he totally defended last years budget.

Yes, that would be it, ahem….

It was the poisoned chalice job.

Have the press been on other chancellor's backs as quick as they did with Reeves?

Then why did she take it?

She wanted it sooooo badly, it hurt.

bombastix · 04/11/2025 18:00

Yes but those aren’t credible. Bell has vastly better credentials than Reeves, he’s been a major leader, and advised the UK during the financial crisis back in 2008. He is a vastly better candidate than Reeves. Also, I don’t believe he didn’t want the job.

Reeves is Starmer’s appointment. It does reflect on him but she’s Chancellor. She has her own judgment. Let’s not patronise her by saying she needs his endorsement. All Chancellors have the heft to justify their own policy. I have never seen it otherwise.

No minister acts in a bubble and no PM allows a minister to go off script.

Sky's economics editor laid out the issues very well, new commitments, esp Defence spend, OBR down grading productivity & Tariffs have all taken away Reeves room to manoeuvre.

That faces any Chancellor.

Aside, When Reeves broke down in the 'commons, gilts went up as markets thought she might resign, once it was realised she wouldn't they dropped back and again and have continued a downward trend.

A change in Chancellor would be very bad for the UK, not just for this budget either.

Alexandra2001 · 04/11/2025 18:22

Fwiw Reeves became Shadow Chancellor in May 2021, at that time, the Tories were well ahead in the polls, an 11 pt lead..... her chances of being Chancellor were almost nil.

placemats · 04/11/2025 18:30

Bell has vastly better credentials than Reeves.

They both have a PPE degree from Oxford. Reeves has a master's in Economics from the LSE. @bombastix

bombastix · 04/11/2025 18:31

Marina Hyde in the Guardian nails Reeves perfectly; it’s not a right wing thing. It’s a “wtf thing”

That is quite useful, placemats. I quite like the use of ⚰️ too. Though I fear it could be very much misinterpreted!

Karistyleaftea · 04/11/2025 18:45

We are still the 6th largest economy in the world though.

BIWI · 04/11/2025 18:50

She wanted it sooooo badly, it hurt.

What’s wrong with that? Or don’t you think women should display that kind of naked ambition, @Nolletimiere?

I’d far rather have someone who really wanted the job than someone just placed in it as a political appointment.

The PP stated it was a ‘poisoned challice job’ - I was responding to that, not to Reeves’s gender - why did you pick on her gender?

With a welfare budget of 24% of total government expenditure.

Notonthestairs · 04/11/2025 18:57

MN is full of the same twats that Be-Leaved giving out financial advice.

Yeah 🤣 👍

Not sorry.

So what will Reform do exactly to bring about economic stability?

We'll tackle the welfare budget.

Don't you know? 'Left leaning women need to stay in their lane, if they come out of it, the 'right and shamefully, some on the left/centre will do all they can to put them back in their lane

Rayner wasn't attacked because of her beliefs or her policies but because she was a woman, who dared to better herself.

It was constant, Only a care worker, Only a union rep, Teenage pregnancy, Slept her way to the top, Council Tax, CGT, buying a council house, selling a council house...

Hunt on the other hand bought 7 flats to avoid stamp duty... who cares? Sunak pays 22% tax on millions... who cares....

No on one the 'right

Karistyleaftea · 04/11/2025 19:10

@Nolletimiere Germany spends 31% on welfare and they are the 3rd biggest economy .

I do not condone that, at all, and am supportive of women of whatever political hue gaining high office.

Equally, I do not differentiate between women and men when it comes to criticism - I have been scathing of both Starmer and Reeves.

No, I am not a fan of Rayner for myriad reasons, but categorically not because she was a woman. I was pleased when she was fired, I admit, but so I was I when Mandy was kicked out.

I don’t focus on the Tories, for the same reasons as I do not focus on Reform - they are not in government making decisions impacting my life, and the lives of many posters on MN.

Zahawi left quite a mess, as did Hunt

Missed out Kwarteng, doh

OK, a subsequent poster has zero’d in on gender, so I have responded to that.

Thanks
