Home bargains hell.

Just visited Home Bargains for the first time. What a horrible shop. Full of the great unwashed and plastic tat! People standing around talking, you can’t get past them. The queuing system is mad! Everyone stands up one aisle and then goes to a till when it’s free. What wrong with queuing normally behind each individual till.
You may save a few pence but you’ll loose your sanity!

Good lord, you sound so far up your own arse that you could tickle your own tonsils.
For the record
I always have a shower if I'm planning a trip to Home Bargains.

KiwiMum2023 · 29/10/2025 15:41

Agree. Grim.

Ah shit 😂

In my defence, the op brought to mind the B&M that’s just around the corner from me.

Our Home Bargains is in a much nicer part of town and isn’t quite as bad.

I thought it was one shop called B&M Home Bargains for ages.

"The great unwashed".

Well, you were there OP!

😂😂😂

Mysticmaud · 29/10/2025 15:41

Not for me usually due to the candle smell but I wanted a laundry hamper and I wasn't paying £45 for it!
My DH and DD go in and I go to Lidl.
We shop everywhere but I do love Fortnum. Can't help it and I'm a council house kid.

1975wasthebest · 29/10/2025 15:45

Yep, being there is a grim experience. Worth it for the bargains, but grim.

rhubarbsigh · 29/10/2025 15:46

I suspect OP is pulling our legs.

Zanzara · 29/10/2025 15:47

DH and I shop in HB, and we're terribly posh, educated and cultured, OP!

Mind you, I note it is half term this week - which could explain at least two aspects of this post...

Does the candle smell cancel out the unwashed smell?

Did you go in there looking for the “I’m a snobbish twat” decal for your living room wall? If you missed it, you’ll find it on the second shelf from the top in the third aisle from the right as you walk in

PlaceIntheClouds · 29/10/2025 15:49

Obviously you are going to get a lot of that sort of clientele in Home Bargains. I find it a soul destroying experience but I am tight and like saving money so have to put up with it once every few weeks.

I’m working class and regularly shop in B&Ms. I do, however, know the difference between lose and loose.

😂😂

Mokel · 29/10/2025 15:49

One thing that annoys me with B&M is that they hardly open normal tills. A great pain if you are buying big/bulky things through the kiosk.

TheFormidableMrsC · 29/10/2025 15:50

I love it. You sound really snobby.

bridgetreilly · 29/10/2025 15:50

I’m very middle class and I love Home Bargains! Full of… wait for it… bargains for the home!

CreativeAccounting · 29/10/2025 15:51

It’s “lose” your sanity, not “loose” your sanity. Try to improve your literacy skills before claiming superiority.

My local Homebase has just reopened as The Range. I’ve never been to one. Is it like HB??

I think that Range is a bit slightly up from HB and BM but I don't like it, I have never been in any store with so many Thou shalt not notices on the doors as you go in! Our rebranded Homebase still looks Homebase, they haven't changed much of the colour scheme or signage, it's neither fish nor foul!

Has your sanity 'loosened' up a bit, or did you mean you lost it somewhere and you're not sure where it is?

Best to avoid stores like that in future.

WithIcePlease · 29/10/2025 15:53

I think your overall grip on sanity must be quite poor if it cannot cope with a trip to HB!
I'll warn you you now, keep away from B and M, The Range, Heron Foods, Farm Foods and possibly Iceland if you are really delicate.

SevenYellowHammers · 29/10/2025 15:54

I see the marmalade is shop bought again

Same here with HB now TR. Didn't even bother to sort out the poor lighting.

I go to a bigger TR which is another 1.5 miles from the other one. It also had the now bust Carpetright and extended into the unit. That The Range is HUGE. Shame a quarter of it is full of those blow up light up Santas and other Xmas inflatables for about £125.

No Home Bargains or The Range here but at B&M, Lidl and Aldi the customers are the same as Sainsburys and Tesco. As far as Waitrose goes we have 2 here - superstore and Little - the superstore has a fairly posh customer base but the Little Waitrose is very urban and has homeless people asking for coffee. It doesn't bother me and it doesn't seem to bother the staff either.

Regarding Middle of Lidl - excellent bargain last Friday. Lovely stainless steel based cook pan/stove top casserole. I would say that there are often a lot of very middle class people in Lidl and Aldi. It's seriously only snobs that are the least bit bothered.

Le Creuset cast iron pumpkin casserole £299.00. Middle of Lidle dupe, very very close - £24.99 .....

RubynRita · 29/10/2025 15:56

I love Home Bargains. Their prices are fantastic. Special K cereal £3.59 as opposed to over £4. Douewe Egbert coffee £6.79 as opposed to £8.
Their cafe, £1 for a cup of tea and £1.99 for a sausage/bacon bap. I could go on.
Yes, it's always busy but the queuing system isn't as you describe in the store I use. You join whichever queue you choose.
I take it you steer clear of Lidl too as their queuing system is the same.

Does the candle smell cancel out the unwashed smell?

Not noticed unwashed people but I have a very sensitive nose (my profession) and hate a certain synthetic smell.
I did once complain about a very smelly women in marks and asked the shop assistant to spray the unit. She refused and said they weren't allowed to use air freshener. I came back an hour later and I could still smell her body odour. Disgusting. I walked out.
My husband has 70 manual staff and they get Mitcham from him if they need it. 'Soap dodgers' is the expression.
