Home bargains hell.

Just visited Home Bargains for the first time. What a horrible shop. Full of the great unwashed and plastic tat! People standing around talking, you can’t get past them. The queuing system is mad! Everyone stands up one aisle and then goes to a till when it’s free. What wrong with queuing normally behind each individual till.
You may save a few pence but you’ll loose your sanity!

I still vote for this to become the system everywhere, Harrods included.

@mangoandmelonsmoothie, I don't know if I should tell you this but I have 2 Home Bargains near to me with cafes.
Yes definitely get on to Tommy. He's not coming up with the goodies!

TheGreenHare · 29/10/2025 16:25

You went into home bargains?!
I hope you’re not pregnant OP. You’ve now been exposed to the great unwashed, very dangerous poverty exposure when pregnant. It’s been linked to babies crying relentlessly until they’ve got a fag in their mouths and down at the job centre. You try to wean them on things like organic free range chicken, real proper chocolate and all they want are chicken nuggets and Cadbury chocolate buttons…. So horrifically common. A roast chicken should feed a family of 6 for a week, but with a child with fetal poverty fumes exposure it’ll last a meal. Having a child with FPFE affects every part of your life.

Even if not pregnant, I heard if you breath in Home Bargains fumes for too long you can catch a minimum wage job. Same applies to B&M but not The Range.

Very risky business OP. Although quite frankly make stupid decisions and I have little sympathy. Enter somewhere like Home Bargains, mingle with the great unwashed and you’ve made your bed as far as I’m concerned. Only yourself to blame.

ConnieHeart · 29/10/2025 16:29

Wow, I'm.not sure which branch you went to but my local one is nothing like this. The only plastic tat might be the toys but I don't go in that aisle & it's just a small part of the store. They're brilliant for bargain toiletries, food etc

Love Home Bargains - favourite products include:
Dog Treats
Kitchenware (serviettes, cake cases, storage containers, baking tins)
Laundry Products
Cereal Bars
Other things on offer eg. Nescafe gold blend, breakfast cereal
Great shop. Queueing not a problem at my local store!

I thought OP was a raging snob until I saw that you'd used the term 'serviette', at which point I realised I probably was one too.

Serviettes???? Don’t you mean napkins?

CuddlesKovinsky · 29/10/2025 16:35

I sometimes wonder if there's a competition out there to see who can get the most replies to a single post on Mumsnet... 😁

But damn, I see you've foxed me with a second post...

I like the fact that you don't have to dress properly before you go. Nobody judges you if you wear a pajama top under your cardigan and have messy hair. Apart from the OP.

True though my manager did suggest I brush my hair before my shift started there.

What on earth?
I’ll be putting pen to paper asap, pointing out he’s “loosing” potential profits and that some people, like you RubynRita, are receiving double preferential treatment.
Snot fair. <stamps foot>

I’m feeling very confused here.
I thought serviettes is what you had with afternoon tea amongst good friends and a napkin is something you get in other places like a McDonald’s.

JohnBullshit · 29/10/2025 16:39

Good Lord, OP, what a dreadful time you're having here. I once spotted my neighbour taking a Home Bargains carrier bag out of her car, and ever since I've had to make sure I keep the children away from hers in case they catch the poverty bug. My DC are over 20, but you can't be too careful.
Anyone know if the Blue Dragon spicy noodle tubs are back?

Covacsy · 29/10/2025 16:40

I was in a very long queue in Wilko once. By the time I reached the till I was an expert on visiting times in various prisons around the country.

I’m working class and regularly shop in B&Ms. I do, however, know the difference between lose and loose.

Brilliant!

Funnywonder · 29/10/2025 16:42

ilovepixie · 29/10/2025 16:18

Lidl is the same. No Aldi here to compare. B&M is slightly better. By the way it’s all slightly tongue in cheek people!

Oh dear. Not great with conveying tone then. Ah well.

So you have been to one Home Bargains on one day and you deem the chain equally smellly, full of "common people" and unpleasant bases on your experience. It is hardly scientific and you are entitled to your opinion. What was your question? AIBU going into a discount store and expecting not to see plastic tat, customers? What am I missing? People/customers can be smelly and chatty/block aisles in any shop/supermarket. You don't sound like you will be going back so genuinely, what is the issue?

Home bargains hell.

How awful for you to have been exposed to the paupers.

I am sure Harrods will welcome you with open arms.

🤭

Chattanoogachoo · 29/10/2025 16:48

I think the smaller Home Bargains are much better.
I'm currently in a large newly opened one in Enniskillen, no coffee in the cafe, basic tea despite the reference to speciality teas.An ancient leaking teapot despite the store only being open for about 6 weeks.
I readily admit to being a tea and coffee snob but struggle with them not even having an Americano.

Zov · 29/10/2025 16:48

One of my favourite shops is Home Bargains. 😐

Each to their own. No-one is forcing you to go again @ilovepixie

Nope. The opposite in fact. It's a french affectation that was originally adopted by people to sound more refined or of a higher social status (if that matters). Hence 'loo', not 'toilet', and one never sits in a 'lounge'.

Moonlightfrog · 29/10/2025 16:50

I am not keen in home bargains or B&M either….but I’m not a snob. You just need to learn which things are worth buying in there and which isle they are on. I mainly buy bird food in there, it’s much cheaper than anywhere else, I go in there for cleaning products too, crisps are much cheaper than supermarkets and occasionally you can get Australian chocolate bars. I don’t go often as our local home bargains has a weird smell in the food isle (ASD and sensitive nose). I do most of my shopping online or in small local shops…not because I am a snob but because I just can cope with busy places and people standing in my way.

JohnTheRevelator · 29/10/2025 16:51

I've been in Home Bargains a few times over the last couple of years and I can't say I noticed anything like this.

AgnesX · 29/10/2025 16:51

The Range more to your taste eh ?!

I thought serviettes were paper and napkins material (ideally linen and stored in monogrammed silver napkin ring). Must ask the butler.
