What was your ludicrous Lockdown purchase?

Mine was a £1000 mini trampoline. I think I've probably used it about 30 times altogether! To be fair it is top quality and lots of fun when I can be bothered to use it. I don't regret it.

What about you?

Peloton Bike only ever used to hang laundry on!

StrandedStarfish · 22/10/2025 23:28

A tiara

whatcanthematterbe81 · 22/10/2025 23:50

Laser hair removal machine. Worth every penny. Came out of that period smooth as butter. Wait, do people say that?

Not me and not expensive, but dp bought a harmonica

He hates parting with money,so when it arrived I was a tad surprised he'd spent money

By week two,it almost went up his arse

Sideways

DH got his hands on a massive massive industrial size sack of flour when everyone went baking mad and there was none to be had.

We contacted local friends to see who wanted some. The orders came flooding in so DH spent a day driving around the local neighbourhood collecting piles of notes from people’s mailboxes and depositing bags of white powder on the driveway in return 😳

Roomforapony · 23/10/2025 00:40

Decided to give DH (self employed), DS2 & DS3 (both furloughed) a project to occupy them. Dismantle (destroy) our old decking and landscape the area. Hired a skip and bought sledgehammers, electric saw, Cotswold stone gravel, fence paint, plants etc…, DD1 borrowed wheelbarrows from work to help move the huge amount of wood and concrete (had to hire a second skip!).
Guess who did the work?
Yup, me, DD1 (both of us working throughout lockdown) and “press ganged” DS3.
DH & DS2 caught Covid so were out of action until, coincidentally, we’d almost finished.
Never doing “a project” again!
Although using a sledgehammer was strangely therapeutic😂

10 boxes of hair dye. While everyone was going nuts over loo roll and pasta I was in the cosmetics aisle panicking about my roots. I didn't use any of them, I grew the dye out and am an out and proud silver vixen to this day. I gave them away on Olio.

MightyGoldBear · 23/10/2025 08:05

Ordered a electric cargo bike that holds 4 children in the front box. Just before lockdown I was due to take my driving test. I use it every day for the school run/nursery run. So a good purchase and instant freedom. I paid it off over two years it wasn't cheap but has been invaluable to me.

I still haven't been able to start up driving lessons again. My theory lapsed during lockdown and they didn't extend it for me but for later people they did. It's now super expensive and a mega backlog of the whole driving lesson/test system.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 23/10/2025 08:52

I already had dog clippers before lockdown, but started doing my husband's hair (and on one fine day, my sister's) with them in lockdown, and he's another who's never paid for a haircut since.

CharSiu · 23/10/2025 10:08

Full size retro video game machine. We used it a lot at the time but due to rearranging stuff it’s now been stored for 2 years.

ComfyPyjamaBottoms · 23/10/2025 10:14

I felt something in the wind the week before the first lockdown announcement so went out and bought a mahoosive TV.
We only had a 21" teeny thing before that. Went up to 60".
Bloody brilliant move!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/10/2025 10:16

I did wonder at the time, a joint buy with dd/SiL, but a little above-ground swimming pool in their garden for the little Gdcs when they could just about swim but all the public pools were closed. Admittedly £££, what with heater etc, but just had its 6th highly successful summer, used by masses of their friends, too.

DeanStockwelll · 23/10/2025 10:58

I wish I'd bought shares in all the companies that manufactured hair clippers ! 😂

BadActingParsley · 22/10/2025 10:01

Oh yes, bought a dog grooming kit, the dog took one look at my nervousness and went and hid under the table and refused to come out. Used the clippers once on DH's hair ....

I'd forgotten about those. Me and DD took our freshly washed and brushed Bedlington out to the garden and stood him on the ironing board.
He's a very tolerant chap and well used to the groomer.
He was in such state he had long bits short bits, baldy bits.
My mum said he looked like he had had several rounds of chemotherapy.
Fortunately the sainted Gemma opened up for welfare grooms

RosesAndHellebores · 24/10/2025 08:51

We didn't buy anything much. When I clear out the baking cupboard I suspect there are about 3 2lb bags of bread flour in there that I shall bin.

The only lasting impact is that I like to have two dozen bog rolls, 20L of water and tins in the garage.

deeahgwitch · 24/10/2025 08:59

The amount of hand sanitisers.
I still have bottles of the stuff and now scientists are questioning its safety.
3 days ago a newspaper had the headline “DISINFECTANT DANGER. Hand Sanitiser feared to ‘increase the risk of cancer’ as experts consider ban.

Eeeek

Good move.
I can totally see why you could see lockdown coming. It was obvious it was coming to me.

In the couple of weeks prior to it, they were announcing keyworker lists, advising people to dodge the pubs, and other things, it wasn't completely out the blue.
I remember Boris announcing BBC had been asked to provide 3 months of education at all levels on Bitesize. But that might have been on his Monday night lockdown announcement.

HebeMumsnet · 24/10/2025 09:57

I bought my cats a cardboard fish and chip shop to play in.

Like a little hut with a window and awning so one could be inside looking like they were serving fish and chips and the other could look like he was queuing for his battered sausage at the hatch. The cats loved playing in the cardboard fish and chip shop, we lauughed ourselves stupid while watching them in their cardboard fish and chip shop... Good times.

Ludicrous? Yes. But I have absolutely no regrets and would do it again in an instant if we were stuck at home for any reason.

A tiara

Shock Could you walk me through the thought process there? I would love to have a tiara, but really what I want is thick hair that is able to wear a tiara, it would look ridiculous in my thin, fly-away hair.

Have you ever worn it?

DeanStockwelll · 24/10/2025 14:15

@HebeMumsnet , your cats played with a toy you bought for them ????? , what kind of sorcery is this ? 😸

A Breadmaker. Think its been used twice. Plus several packs.of bread mixes that were left to go out of date.

Same. The loaf tin bit was too small for it to be much use. I gave it away.

Bought a Crockpot after that Love it.

I hope I’ve posted correctly. Apologies if I haven't.

My thought process for the tiara….. well I worked in healthcare through the pandemic. I was working in a service that didn’t pause so wore the full rigmarole of PPE. Lots of the patients had Covid. My Dad was clinically vulnerable and I would drop his shopping off at his home daily but couldn’t hug him.

I always referred to the plastic visor I wore as my tiara. I remember thinking in May 2020 ‘when this is over, if we all survive, I’m going to buy a proper tiara’.

I couldn’t hug him for 166 days. We were lucky, everyone in my family did survive. So I bought the tiara second hand, it’s just paste diamante and emerald. I have worn it. Hair style wise I put my hair in a pony tail, then slide the bobble as far as possible along the ponytail then loop it through the hair, back comb it and pin it in a sort of French roll. I have very thin hair. We had a rerun of a special birthday party and wore ball gowns and tiaras. We drank tea and ate Costco cake. My Dad wore a white tuxedo.

I often just wear it around the house now.

Oh that's lovely @StrandedStarfish, I particularly love that your Dad wore a white tuxedo for the occasion.

Needspaceforlego · 25/10/2025 09:18
