What was your ludicrous Lockdown purchase?

Mine was a £1000 mini trampoline. I think I've probably used it about 30 times altogether! To be fair it is top quality and lots of fun when I can be bothered to use it. I don't regret it.

What about you?

113 balls of cotton yarn to crochet a square a day for a blanket.
Tbf I did make it but everyone who saw it laughed at it and says it is Elmer the Elephant's . It now lives in a drawer .
The boy, the mole , the fox and the horse book.
DH bought the ubiquitous hair clippers. They too live in a drawer.
He also bought a sack of spuds from the farm shop which turned green and sprouted.
Not ludicrous but we bought a house after viewing it for 15 minutes , it was a long way from home.
Although ......................................maybe ludicrous.

A sewing machine - cost just over £100. Made lots of masks but haven't touched it since.

An air purifier. It has a hepa filter to kill viruses. It is quite noisy. Used a few times during Covid but haven't used it since.

DH bought industrial quantities of sanitiser, masks, transparent plastic face screens and toilet rolls.

DS bought us a Facebook portal - a wide-angle camera which showed us our toddler GCs playing in their home by video link. It was worth its weight in gold because we really missed them. I think the portals are obsolete now - must chuck it out..

sodabreadjam · 22/10/2025 19:10

Oh - and hairdressing scissors after watching "cut your own hair" videos on YouTube - never used. Nearly bought clippers too.

A summerhouse which is now a holding place for any old shit no one wants in the house but isn’t prepared to throw out.

Some weird massage gun that my personal trainer recommended, turns out massaging yourself with a noisy battery operated lump of plastic isn’t very relaxing.

Pretty sure they have shut down now so may find they are worth a bit more.

Hopefully!

RiderGirl · 22/10/2025 19:24

A bike for DH off someone on FB. Everyone in the family except him had one, I saw it for sale and the person selling it left it in the front garden for me. I had a "fuck it" moment and drove an hour to pick it up, absolutely terrified that I'd be arrested (and marvelled at how I didn't see a single other car on the road the entire way - it felt apocalyptic!)

We had a handful of bike rides and it's been in the shed unridden ever since, me and DD no longer even have bikes so it's the last one standing!

DoMiraculousThingsWithBroccoli · 22/10/2025 19:35

A paddling pool. Not that bad as it only cost a tenner, but bloody fledgling seagulls and their angry parents took over it. Our garden was unusable for ages!

Not me and not expensive, but dp bought a harmonica

He hates parting with money,so when it arrived I was a tad surprised he'd spent money

By week two,it almost went up his arse

Sideways

This made me laugh out loud!!! 😂

A spin bike. Used about 5 times!

Dh talked me out of a hot tub!

FortressOfTea · 22/10/2025 19:39

About 25 new houseplants over a period of 3 months. I just went a bit crazy and became really interested in plants.
I still have the majority of them!

A little black kitten 🫣

He’s now five and a half and shows his gratitude by brining me things he’s clearly pinched out of other peoples houses - last time it was a freshly baked scone 🤣

Awwwww! I've never wanted a cat because I couldn't cope with it bringing me presents in the form of mangled things (especially if they're still flapping!) but I'd love a kleptomaniac cat. I love Youtube vids of them up to their tricks and the endless mortification of their owners!

A telescope.

I'm now a keen amateur astronomer and do (bad) astrophotography whenever the nights are clear.

It's a ridiculously expensive hobby.

I regret nothing.

ClaredeBear · 22/10/2025 19:42

Wild deodorant.

A conure parrot. He hates me but I love him

Try getting him a friend! Maybe he's playing up due to stress and that could help?

I just ordered lots of clothes that I didn't need and couldn't wear out.

Then when we were allowed to go out i didn't know how to dress like Outside People so opted to wear it all. I looked like fucking ET dressed as a woman.

@SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter we got a mini trampoline too, a bargain at £300 but it is still used.

what make is yours? Ours I have to keep buying new bungees and mats. I want a better one….

Bellicon. I wasn't even looking for it, just saw an advert on Youtube and thought it sounded like fun!

As I say, absolutely peak quality, but you would expect it to be gold plated and studded in diamonds for that price...

@WinWhenTheyreSinging

It was surprisingly easy! Check it out...

https://www.bellicon.com/en-eu/store/

The trampoline is 'only' £600 but by the time you've added on folding legs, a padded cover for the bungees, a storage bag and a pair of grippy socks, it's actually more than £1000. Absolutely bonkers.

Hundreds of wool squares that I knitted as part of a ‘knit along’ but never got round to stitching up into the finished coronablanket. Still in a plastic box in my office.

I do not regret the Sage coffee machine.

Have you seen this kind of thread on mn , there are quite a few 'huggers'.
If you genuinely have no use for the squares perhaps you would be willing to send them on.
Tho I am aware each new blanket tends to want certain colours and stich types it may be worth contacting them.

There are lots of different threads requesting squares ( this one is just asking for advice on a colour )

My amazing Woolly Hugs blanket was made in 2017 (username Tunnocks) and is still one of the most precious things I own - still on my bed all the time...

We bought a kit to build a 3D printer. I spent the first week of lockdown building it while DS read the manual. We were hoping to print visors for NHS staff. Just as I finished building it I got covid and was in quarantine, unable to stand up for 6 weeks. We never got to contribute visors, since I was considered infectious. We did make them though.

DS has become an absolute whizz at 3D printing, and loves it. He still produces little things to solve household problems at the drop of a hat.

My abiding memory of the lockdown is the special tune that the 3D printer sang as it printed NHS visors. It was a nice tune.

ImSoJulia · 22/10/2025 20:13

Nothing big. Splashed out £££ on a big pack of coloured Sharpies as all the own brand stuff was sold out. They're still going, and treasured, mind you.

My actual, sensible splurge was £400 of Phillips Lumea. My legs have been soft ever since the pandemic. It's saved me so much time and money instead of futile waxing. Paid for itself within a year.

ImSoJulia · 22/10/2025 20:18

Oh, I did get a bat monitor too. Love it.

DeanStockwelll · 22/10/2025 20:26

I was still working full time but could work from home one or two days each fortnight ( something I'd never done before or since)
When it was quite my boss was fine with me doing household stuff

I had a damp patch about 6 inches square on one wall so I thought is take the plaster off , let it dry out and replaster it and paint it.

A 4 foot patch later and a lot of mess later it was sorted but then I decided the room needed decorating, 2.5 years later and I dread to think how much money I had my 25 foot long through lounge completely redecorated and recarpeted.
I still like it now but by god it took a long time !

CoralPombear · 22/10/2025 20:28

So much. A gaming pc, one of those rubbish blow up hot tubs, hair clippers, you name it. My poor credit card took a similar period to recover!
