It's a gift to Putin, that's for sure.

He will play this internationally as "When I invade rightfully take back a country, violating its sovereignty, the US, Australia and Europe et al condemn me. When the US invades a country, violates its sovereignty and kidnaps its leader, they do... what?"

If countries in the pro-Ukrainian alliance DON'T condemn the US over Venezuela, Putin will yell hypocrisy. He's cracking the champagne over this blatant destruction of the rules-based national order.

If countries in the pro-Ukrainian alliance DO condemn the US, that damages the alliance – to a greater or lesser extent depending whether the condemnation is just words or also actions. But whatever form it takes, Trump will hold a personal grudge against anyone condemning his military action till his dying day.

Damned if we do, damned if we don't. Fuck Trump for doing this and putting the rest of NATO in this position.

I think the rest of what was NATO until Trump happened may well be in the process of wiping their hands of him and setting up their own international peace-keeping organisation that cuts an unreliable bully out of the equation so they can get on with it without all these petty dramas.

Oh, and organising defence contracts with companies not based in what is apparently being shown to be a hostile nation.

I think this will not be happening overnight; I think it's been happening for a while, quietly. And who wants to pay their NATO "dues" when they are using the money for some other defensive alliance?

TBF Putin doesn't give a fuck about the "Rules based order" he never has.

He does what he wants, threatens war with anyone who opposes him, uses Nuclear & Biological poisons, Georgia, Chechnya, Crimea and Ukraine anyone?

Interferes in referendums and elections... destabilising the EU... all this done long before last night.

None of what has happened will affect what Russia does or doesn't do & it may sour relations with the US (which would benefit Ukraine) Russia has interests in Venezuela after all.

On NATO, the remaining members wont step up, i don't believe they have really comprehended what Trump is, their thinking "He'll be gone in 2.5 years" stupid stupid stupid!

⚡️ On Tuesday, January 6, meetings with the US president’s team will be held in Paris, President Zelenskyy said.

🇺🇦🇺🇸 Ukraine and the US, at the General Staff level, have agreed on a support document for the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The document consists of four sections and four annexes. It outlines mechanisms for supporting Ukraine and the Armed Forces, including the supply, restoration, and modernization of the army, as well as procedures for monitoring implementation and responding to violations by either side, according to Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine Andriy Hnatov.

The first session of the meeting with national security advisers focused on reviewing the key documents, with the exception of the economic one, said Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Serhii Kyslytsia.
“The economic document will be discussed at the second session, with the participation of Prime Minister of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko and Economy Minister Oleksii Sobolev, who was directly involved in negotiations with foreign partners on its preparation.
Today, we have a broad geography of national security advisers — 15 countries plus international organizations. These include the European Union, the European Commission, the European Council, and NATO, the North Atlantic Alliance.”

Trump said he is neither enthusiastic about Putin nor threatened of him.
“I thought the easiest conflict to resolve would be the war between Russia and Ukraine, but I haven’t been able to reconcile them yet,” he added.
The US president also said he is dissatisfied with the progress of his contacts with Putin.

Over the past week, Russia launched more than 1,070 guided aerial bombs, almost a thousand strike drones, and six missiles at Ukraine, President Zelenskyy said.

We will make the people of Venezuela prosperous, independent, and secure, said Trump.
Other statements by the US President:
▫️ The US operation in Venezuela was called “Midnight Hammer.” Its main objective was to capture Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
▫️ “It was an assault unlike anything seen since World War II — a strike on a heavily fortified military stronghold in the heart of Caracas to bring the criminal dictator Nicolás Maduro to justice.”
▫️ Maduro and his inner circle were aware of the operation and “waited in combat positions,” but were completely routed and neutralized by US forces.
▫️ Maduro’s rule is over. He is no longer president.
▫️ The US has intercepted 97% of the drugs entering the country.
▫️ There were no US military casualties.
▫️ The US built Venezuela’s oil industry, but the regime stole it, costing Washington billions.
▫️ What happened to Maduro could happen to any dictator.

😢 Fragments of a third person’s body were found under the rubble of a five-story building destroyed by Russian missiles in Kharkiv, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.
On January 2, Russian troops struck a five-story residential building in Kharkiv’s Kyivskyi district with two Iskander ballistic missiles. The building was almost completely destroyed. A three-year-old boy and his mother were killed under the rubble.

Posted by a random on Facebook but it caught my attention because it’s Fiona Hill. Is anybody aware of Hill saying this? I haven’t heard her mention it before in interviews :

“Remember Fiona Hill? The former senior director for European and Russian affairs on the U.S. National Security Council who testified in Trump's first impeachment. During her 2019 congressional testimony, Hill stated that Russian officials had informally signaled an interest in a "swap arrangement" involving Venezuela and Ukraine. Russia suggested that if the U.S. wanted Russia out of its "backyard" (Venezuela), then the U.S. should stay out of Russia’s "backyard" (Ukraine). Hill noted that both countries are rich in oil and minerals, making them high-value assets for their respective regional powers. Following the capture of Maduro, analysts are questioning if this represents a fulfillment of the "swap" Hill described. Some experts warn that if the U.S. has secured "acquiescence" from Russia regarding Venezuela, the "price" may be reduced U.S. support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s getting sold out in real time. Trump’s pushing Zelensky to negotiate directly with Putin. Europe’s being told to handle their own defense. The 2025 National Security Strategy document barely mentions Russia as an adversary anymore.”

OPEC+ countries will not change oil production levels amid the US operation in Venezuela, Reuters reports.
The decision was confirmed by eight OPEC+ members that together account for about half of global oil production.
The online meeting took place as oil prices have fallen by more than 18% in 2025 amid fears of oversupply. Participants agreed to extend the pause on production increases, introduced in November, for another three months — until March. The restrictions were imposed due to weak seasonal demand during the winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
Analysts note that the oil market is currently reacting more to political uncertainty than to supply and demand fundamentals. OPEC+ has opted for stability rather than active intervention.
At the same time, analysts believe that a production increase in Venezuela, which holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, is unlikely in the coming years, even with potential US investment.
The decision was confirmed by eight OPEC+ members that together account for about half of global oil production.

“Venezuela in exchange for Ukraine.” Russia wants to benefit from the US operation in Venezuela, which it sees as proof that Washington is ready to divide the world into “spheres of influence,” Reuters reports, citing senior Russian officials.
Russia had previously proposed to the United States an “exchange of Venezuela for Ukraine,” Fiona Hill, former senior adviser on Russia and Eurasia at the US National Security Council during Trump’s first term, said in a 2019 address to Congress.
According to Hill, Moscow made the proposal when the US-backed opposition was trying to overthrow Nicolás Maduro, while the Kremlin was helping him stay in power.
“You want us out of your backyard. But actually, we’re in a similar situation. You are in our backyard,” Hill recalled Russia’s position on Ukraine.

Today, the “Coalition of the Willing” — a group of countries allied with Ukraine — will meet with US representatives in Paris to discuss security guarantees and ways to end the war with Russia, Deutsche Welle reports.
Representatives of 35 countries are expected to take part, including 27 heads of state. Ukraine will be represented by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
French President Emmanuel Macron will also host UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and other leaders.
The US delegation will include President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
According to the Élysée Palace, the goal of the meeting is to demonstrate “coherence” between the United States, Ukraine, and European allies on security guarantees for Ukraine.
The focus will be on discussions of multinational forces to ensure peace in Ukraine, support for the Ukrainian army, long-term defense cooperation, and responses to potential new Russian attacks.
Participants will also discuss a shared vision for a ceasefire and responses to violations. The exact agenda has not yet been disclosed.

✍️ Nearly $500 million in Telegram bonds held in Russia have been frozen due to Western sanctions. This has exposed the messenger’s financial vulnerability to the Russian market, despite founder Pavel Durov’s public efforts to distance himself from Moscow.
This is a particularly painful blow for Durov. In recent years, he has repeatedly dismissed speculation about his dependence on the Kremlin as “conspiracy theories” and sought to demonstrate a break with Russia. Telegram declined to comment.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said the attack on Maduro “became a harbinger of a return to the era of lawlessness and US power domination.”

Khamenei sympathizes with Putin and considers Russia culturally closer to Iran than other possible countries for asylum. A source in Israeli intelligence stated that there is no other safe country for him.
An intelligence source reported that Khamenei's inner circle is proactively collecting funds, registering property abroad, and preparing finances for a safe departure.

🇨🇿 Nearly 40,000 Czechs have signed a letter of apology to Ukraine following anti-Ukrainian statements by the Speaker of Parliament, reports the Czech media outlet Novinky.
The letter was written by Antonín Kolář, a Czech teacher and the head of the village of Semněvice. Initially, he intended for it to be private, but he decided that "the voice of one person is easily lost in the public sphere." The letter was published on January 2.
According to him, although Speaker Tomio Okamura represents a minority, his public position makes his voice disproportionately loud. The author of the letter emphasized that there are many people in the Czech Republic who feel respect, solidarity, and gratitude toward Ukraine and its citizens.
In his New Year's address, Okamura spoke out against funding military aid to Ukraine from the Czech budget, called the war against the RF "senseless," and referred to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s inner circle as a "junta."

At least two Ukrainian children were sent by Russians to the "Sondowon" summer camp in North Korea. "Suspilne" has uncovered details of their trips and life at the camp

The day at the camp begins at 06:30 AM — children clean the area around the monuments of North Korean leaders. For communication with relatives, there are special rooms with telephones; a call costs $1 per minute.
12-year-old Mykhailo from occupied Makiivka (pictured) said that every day the children were shown five or six monuments dedicated to local leaders and the Korean War. He mentioned that he "really liked" the developed cult of personality in the country.
Entertainment included computer games with violent, politicized plots — for instance, blowing up the White House.
