🇺🇸 White House vows to continue seizing sanctioned oil tankers despite the risk of rising tensions with Russia.
“He (Trump — ed.) will ensure that our policies are implemented in the best interests of the United States. This means imposing an embargo on all shadow fleet vessels illegally transporting oil,” White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt said.
At the same time, she claimed that Trump maintains good relations with Putin:
“I believe this personal relationship will continue.”

American troops have boarded the tanker Marinera, which Putin had ordered a submarine and warships to protect.
Photos have emerged showing U.S. forces landing on Marinera, a tanker from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” that had been evading the U.S. Coast Guard for two weeks.
The vessel is a sanctioned tanker formerly known as Bella 1. It was sailing under the Panamanian flag toward Venezuela. After U.S. forces attempted to intercept it in the Caribbean Sea, the crew painted a Russian tricolor on the hull and informed the Coast Guard that the ship was under Russian control.
According to The New York Times, Russia then officially requested that the United States halt its pursuit of the tanker. The sanctioned Bella 1 was later listed in Russia’s official vessel registry under its new name, Marinera.
Earlier today, U.S. media reported that Russia had dispatched a submarine and other naval assets to escort the tanker.

U.S. actions contradict the norms of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Russia’s Ministry of Transport said.

Bella 1's crew is now subject to prosecution for any applicable violation of federal law, and they will be brought to the US for such prosecution if necessary, according to the White House.

In response to the United States seizing Russian oil tankers, a senior Russian official has suggested military retaliation, going as far as threatening a nuclear strike against the US. The term “Human Safari” sounds like a premise from a dystopian fictional novel, but for those living along the Dnipro River, it isn’t the case. It’s the name Ukrainian locals and journalists have given to Russia’s campaign of drone terror, where FPV drones are deployed not for military objectives but to hunt down civilians.

Prisoner exchanges, Budanov's role in the Office of the President, and the nuclear umbrella. Key takeaways from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's communication with journalists.
🔴The new Head of the Office of the President, Kyrylo Budanov, will not deal with information policy in his role. Instead, his responsibilities will include the issue of prisoner exchanges.
🔴The security guarantees do not involve nuclear weapons. Discussions center on foreign contingents, protection on the ground, in the sky, and at sea, air defense, and the strengthening and financing of the army.
🔴Amendments to the legislation regarding elections and referendums during wartime may be introduced as early as February. However, the specific date depends on negotiations.
🔴Zelenskyy does not yet have a clear answer as to whether European partners are ready to protect Ukraine in the event of a repeated Russian attack. "I see political will and that partners are ready to give us strong sanctions and strong security guarantees. But until we have legal security guarantees supported by parliaments and the US Congress, this question cannot be answered."

Two 20-year-old South African gamers regularly played the military simulator Arma 3 via Discord, where they met a recruiter — a user known as "Dash." After communicating with him in July 2024, the South Africans traveled to Russia.

The US has detained another vessel, the Sophia, in the Caribbean Sea, announced US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
Reuters sources say this tanker departed Venezuelan waters in early January as part of a fleet of vessels secretly transporting Venezuelan oil to China. Ukrainian intelligence had reported that tankers within this fleet also carried Russian oil.
Shortly before this, the US military detained the Russian tanker Marinera, which is also suspected of transporting oil from Venezuela.

🇺🇸 US Senator Lindsey Graham wrote that Donald Trump has given the green light to a sanctions bill against the Russian Federation.
This bill grants the US President the authority to impose secondary tariffs of 500% on countries that purchase Russian energy resources. It would also empower Trump to raise tariffs on all remaining US imports from Russia to at least 500%.
Graham expects Congress to support the bill as early as next week.
▪️ The bill was actively promoted until mid-July, after which Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune stated it would be postponed because Trump wanted to do "something on his own."
▪️ The past month has been marked by a weakening of US sanctions against Russia's financial sector. The US lifted restrictions on former Sberbank CFO Alexandra Buriko and temporarily suspended sanctions on several Russian banks linked to nuclear energy.

A fire occurred in Moscow at the "Salut" defense plant, which produces aircraft engines.
The fire broke out at the Rostec-owned plant in eastern Moscow, local media reported. According to the Telegram channel 112, which is close to security services, technological equipment caught fire at the facility.
The fire has since been extinguished. The causes of the blaze have not been disclosed.
"ODC-Salut" is engaged in the production and maintenance of aircraft engines for both civil and military aviation. The enterprise is under sanctions from the US, EU, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Ukraine..

Key Takeaways

  1. The US Coast Guard seized two oil tankers with links to Russia for attempting to bypass US sanctions against Venezuelan oil.
  2. US, Ukrainian, and Coalition of the Willing officials continued talks in Paris on January 7, and details of the potential security guarantees for Ukraine are beginning to emerge.
  3. Russian forces are likely unable to simultaneously replace losses suffered in Ukraine and build out their strategic reserves.
  4. Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Kharkiv and Pokrovsk directions. Russian forces recently advanced in Sumy Oblast and in the Hulyaipole direction.

https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-january-8-2026/

Key Takeaways

  1. Preliminary unconfirmed reports suggested that Russian forces may have conducted an Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) strike against Lviv Oblast on the night of January 8, but Ukrainian officials have not yet confirmed these reports.
  2. The Kremlin again explicitly rejected the security guarantees for Ukraine that the United States and Europe are currently finalizing with Ukraine as part of a peace agreement.
  3. The owner of the Russian-flagged Bella-1 oil tanker that the US Coast Guard seized on January 7 is reportedly affiliated with Russian efforts to evade sanctions against the Venezuelan oil sector.
  4. Russia appears to be attempting to distance itself from the Bella-1 oil tanker even as it seeks to protect other likely shadow fleet vessels.
  5. The Russian military command reportedly continues to create new military units and formations but will likely struggle to staff them to their full doctrinal end strength.
  6. The United Kingdom provided Ukraine with air defense systems amidst Russia’s escalating long-range drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian civilian and critical infrastructure.
  7. Russian forces recently advanced in Sumy Oblast.

🇺🇦🇺🇳 Ukraine is urgently convening a UN Security Council meeting following the Oreshnyk missile strike on the Lviv region, Foreign Minister Sybiha said.
“Such a strike near the borders of the EU and NATO is a serious threat to security on the European continent and a test for the transatlantic community. We demand a decisive response to Russia’s reckless actions,” he wrote.

Putin does not want peace. Russia’s response to diplomacy is more missiles and destruction — EU reaction to today’s strikes on Ukraine.

In the Lviv region, a critical infrastructure facility was attacked, the Regional Military Administration reported.

❗️A repeated double-tap strike hit a high-rise building in Kyiv. One medic was killed, and several medical workers were injured while responding to the scene.

The ballistic missile that struck Lviv was traveling at a speed of approximately 13,000 kilometers per hour, according to the Air Command West.
The missile’s type will be determined after its fragments are examined.

⚡️In Kryvyi Rih, 40,000 homes are without electricity and 2,500 high-rise buildings are without heat, the city’s Defense Council reported.
Due to power outages, six large boiler houses connected to high-voltage lines are not operating, and there are no generators capable of supplying them.
More than 30 smaller boiler houses are currently running on alternative power.
As for water supply, six pumping stations have shut down over the past four hours. Air has entered the system and will be eliminated within two days. Water pressure has decreased.

By the end of 2025, Russia’s irrecoverable military losses reached 1.2 million, surpassing its pre-war force size. Russia saw a sharp drop in crude oil production in December 2025 — the largest decline in the past 18 months, Bloomberg reports.

Another ship, flying the flag of the Comoros, transporting soybeans, was also hit near the port of Odesa. Preliminary reports indicate casualties.
“This is yet more evidence that Russia is deliberately targeting civilian facilities, international shipping, and food logistics. Ukraine is doing everything possible to ensure security and fulfill export obligations despite constant attacks,” Kuleba wrote.

Meanwhile, in the Dnipropetrovsk region, heating and water have been fully restored, except for part of Kryvyi Rih, where restoration work is ongoing.

How Putin began taking Crimea () long before 2014
Russia’s takeover of Crimea did not begin in 2014. In the first part of a new documentary, the Kyiv Independent’s War Crimes Investigation Unit looks at how Russia began moving to seize the peninsula immediately after Ukraine gained independence in 1991. The film traces Moscow’s early military and political pressure in Crimea, focusing on the struggle over the Black Sea Fleet and the intimidation of Ukrainian officers who tried to bring naval units under Kyiv’s control — including arrests, sabotage, and moments that nearly escalated into armed confrontation. French President Emmanuel Macron informed parliament and the government of a plan to deploy 6,000 French troops in Ukraine after the war ends, far from the front line, Le Monde reports.

The UK will spend $268 million to prepare a military contingent for possible deployment in Ukraine, the UK Ministry of Defence said.
The announcement was made by UK Defence Secretary John Healey following a visit to Ukraine. The £200 million (about $268 million) will be allocated to deployment preparation, equipment modernization, communications systems, counter-drone protection, and additional gear.
Healey said he discussed the potential deployment of troops with Ukraine’s leadership in Kyiv. He also confirmed that production of British Octopus interceptor drones will begin this month, boosting Ukraine’s ability to defend civilians and critical infrastructure from Russian drone attacks. The UK plans to manufacture thousands of Octopus drones each month.

Putin has completely failed in Ukraine, former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, now Norway’s finance minister, told the German magazine Wirtschaftswoche.
“Putin is not showing any serious intention to negotiate at the moment. But Russia understands this is a war of attrition, so the West must continue supporting Ukraine to force Moscow to the negotiating table.
So far, Putin has completely failed. The war began in 2014 and is still ongoing. Even after the escalation in 2022, he does not control all of Donbas.
He believed that after the invasion he would be able to take control of key cities and the rest of Ukraine within weeks.
Almost four years later, he has lost 50% of the territory he controlled at the beginning of the full-scale war. At the same time, Russia continues to seize certain areas.
The Kremlin has also shown it is willing to pay an extremely high price for this invasion — in blood and money.
But regimes like Putin’s have a common trait: they only look strong — until they are no longer strong,” Stoltenberg said.
