Do you own a tape measure or ruler? Lighthearted poll

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 12/10/2025 21:19

In my household of 3 adults, between us we own at least 3 rulers and 2 tape measures.

Poll:

Composition of your household?
Own any rulers?
Own any tape measures?

I’m thinking if you have kids, you have rulers. If you have a husband or have ever done any DIY, you have a tape measure.

Reason for poll - I asked someone on Vinted for the measurements of a T-shirt and a) she didn’t know what I meant and b) after I said ‘just armpit to armpit’ she claimed not to have anything to measure with. So she lost the sale.

2 adults, 2 children (4 & 7)

Rulers, we have 5 that I know of.

Tape measures 7, 9 you count those paper ones from IKEA.

7catsisnotenough · 12/10/2025 21:31

Rulers - several, not at home so can't count, tape measures - at least 3 steel (including one permanently in my handbag), plus several fabric ones in my sewing room... Holds hand up and admits to being a measuring addict 😞

wonderingwhatsnext · 12/10/2025 21:33

3 adults. We have several rulers, tape measures for DIY and a soft tape measure for sewing.

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 12/10/2025 21:34

Oh I forgot the one in my sewing kit!

2 adults, an excessive amount of metal rulers probably over ten, I use them a lot for work, I think around 5 tape measures

MondeoFan · 12/10/2025 21:35

Rulers and tape measures here both hard and soft ones

CheeseWisely · 12/10/2025 21:36

2 adults here. At least 3 tape measures, one of them soft for sewing. I’m sure there’s a ruler round here somewhere. Also have a cutting board marked with cms that could be used in a pinch.

Arlanymor · 12/10/2025 21:36

One person - use my iPhone app for measurements and if I need a ruler then I have a billion hardback books…

FridayNighFeeling · 12/10/2025 21:36

Couple of rulers, measuring tape - DIY type and also a sewing one with the needle & thread and spare buttons

BusWankers · 12/10/2025 21:36

2 adults, one 5 year old.

I have 3 tape measures (2 x sewing, 1 x DiYy)and two rulers (15/30cm)
DH has 3 tape measures for work

DD has 2 tape measures, one for sewing, one for DIY, and she has 4 identical rulers (party bag crap)

Ddakji · 12/10/2025 21:36

2 metal tape measures

1 sewing tape measure

Several rulers (teen DD plus DH and I use them for work)

JohnBullshit · 12/10/2025 21:36

Rulers, I dunno, a bunch? No school aged kids here so it's a question of where to lay hands on one. Quicker to grab a tape measure from a drawer or sewing box.

ShrimpBoil · 12/10/2025 21:37

Innumerable measures here, 2 kids now finished school, 2 combined sewing boxes (me and lovely late MIL), husband engineer and DIYer.

60andcounting · 12/10/2025 21:37

Probably a plastic ruler somewhere and 2 sewing measuring tapes. 2 tape measures.
Probably don't have another item that others use all the time.

RandomUsernameHere · 12/10/2025 21:37

2 adults, 2 DC
1 tape measure
Probably more than 10 rulers (all of them belonging to the DCs)

The Vinted seller could have used a phone measuring app if she didn’t have either!

ShesTheAlbatross · 12/10/2025 21:37

I’ve have endless tape measures because we always lose them

DoOneBetty · 12/10/2025 21:38

Lots, children are now adults but we have several rulers from their school days as I bought a set of 10 due to kids pinching them in class or snapping them, arseholes, so I bought flexible non-breaking ones. I have a ruler next to me for when I buy anything online I can look and see the actual size in cm or inches.

Tape measures, 2 retractable DIY ones, different lengths, also carpenter's square, right angle metal thing, wallpaper straight edge all with measurements.

Flexible tape measures for dressmaking, lots, one because I sew, I always have one in my handbag too.

Household 4 adults which includes 2 grown up children.

HannahHamptonsGloves · 12/10/2025 21:39

2 adults and 2 teens.

Multiple rulers (including a scale rule) and at least 3 metal tape measures and 3 fabric/sewing tapes.

Comeonbabylightmyfire · 12/10/2025 21:40

2 adults. At least 3 rulers, a variety of different types of measuring tapes.

I’m not sure how we would do life without some sort of way to measure things.

Onemoreagainforluck · 12/10/2025 21:40

I live by myself and I've got at least 3 retractable metal tape measures, several cloth tape measures, I 18 inch ruler, 1 12 inch ruler and numerous small rulers.

Kitchenbattle · 12/10/2025 21:41

2 metal tape measures
1 sewing tape measure
Several rulers
And a finger measuring thing for ring sizes

Wifeofazombie · 12/10/2025 21:41

I've got 3 tape measures 2 full size ones and a mini one.
I don't even know how many rulers we have in the house. Lots of them.
I also have 3 dress makers tape measures.

TheNightingalesStarling · 12/10/2025 21:42

Two secondary school children... many many rulers. Its compulsory to have at least one at school. But they have more!

Tape measures... again many both of the DIY and sewing variety. Used regularly.
Plus an icing ruler and DIY ruler.

Plus set squares, protractors, compasses etc.

Tigerbalmshark · 12/10/2025 21:42

Two adults one child. Multiple rulers (plastic and wooden), multiple tapes (dressmaking tape measures, metal diy tape measures, and one massive outdoor surveying tape).

We used to own a meter ruler but I seem to have mislaid it between moves. I think I had it for school projects, back in the day when that meant sticking things to a piece of A1 paper.
