Do you own a tape measure or ruler? Lighthearted poll

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 12/10/2025 21:19

In my household of 3 adults, between us we own at least 3 rulers and 2 tape measures.

Poll:

Composition of your household?
Own any rulers?
Own any tape measures?

I’m thinking if you have kids, you have rulers. If you have a husband or have ever done any DIY, you have a tape measure.

Reason for poll - I asked someone on Vinted for the measurements of a T-shirt and a) she didn’t know what I meant and b) after I said ‘just armpit to armpit’ she claimed not to have anything to measure with. So she lost the sale.

Both.

Choclabratwatowner88 · 12/10/2025 22:55

house of 7, we have 3 actual tape measures, one that’s in our sowing box. I know of about 6 rulers but I suspect dd has a hoarded some. She has more stationary than smiggle at this rate.

PickAChew · 12/10/2025 22:57

DS2 has a collection of identical rulers. 5 or 6 of them. They're not allowed to be separated.

I keep a retracting tape measure in my handbag and have a few more tape measures lof various types and all manner of rulers - a selection shown below.

DH has several retractable tape measures and a few rulers and a micrometer that I occasionally borrow.

DS1 did have a couple of rulers but I think DS2 nabbed them for his collection.

Oh goodness, I have three dress making fabric tape measures including my mother’s from the 60’s.

two vintage meter wooden rulers.

A vintage fold out wooden ruler.

two builders pull out tape measures extending to around 3 meters (including my dad’s from the 1950’s)
A 60 meter landscaping tape measure.

Multiple school type 30cm rulers in metal.

A large surveying wheel and two tiny measuring roller wheels for maps.

2 scale rule rulers.

The old ones especially make me happy.

You know what I wish I had though! A laser tape measure. They look so cool (and are far less faff than a metal tape measure).

I forgot that DH has one of them, too.

KawasakiBabe · 12/10/2025 23:01

1 person.

Pribabky about 5 rulers
2 soft tape measures (dress making ones, I guess they’d be
4 DIY tape neasures.

These we’re all here when 5 people lived here, no one took them with them when they left, lol

Ponderingwindow · 12/10/2025 23:07

Oh and I just got a projector so I can project a calibrated measured pattern onto any desired surface.

Octoberaddsagale · 12/10/2025 23:09

I’ve had this from eBay sellers, too, saying they don’t have a tape measure, when the clothing they are listing isn’t cheap.

There’s a Measure app on iPhones/ipads.

I have many tape measures and several rulers - I knit and sew.

1000DayChallenge · 12/10/2025 23:18

Three people living here. Daughter is 26 and probably doesn’t have either

I have at least 6 tape measures (I sew, so they’re the soft retractable ones, max 150cm) and probably 20 rulers. When the children discarded them from stationery sets I kind of absorbed them, I’m stationery monitor in our house. I also have a big cutting mat with measurements printed on

Husband probably has half a dozen rules and 6/8 tape measures, maybe more. Hes a designer and also loves DIY

If I didn’t have a tape measure I’d measure with something standard sized like a book or tin of baked beans

InfoSecInTheCity · 12/10/2025 23:19

Loads of tape measures, even have one on my keyring, surprising how often it comes in handy when I’m out in a shop and need to know whether a storage box will be the right size or whatever.

AutumnCosy2025 · 12/10/2025 23:22

live alone.

At least 3 rulers that I know exactly where they are plus a few more kicking about.

3 decent metal tape measures (1 short 2.5 m I think. 1 longer 10 m I think, longest can't remember used in the old garden so a decent length & completely unsuitable gir neasuring g shirts!)

3 decent soft sewing tape measure (in sewing box, knitting supplies, 'current' crochet bag)

many novelty & ikea ones in various places.

odds like the measure on the spirit level, baking sheet etc.

yes, completely mental she said she didn't have any way of measuring a t shirt.

how much did she want for it. How exact did you need the measurement to be? Would 'hand span' have been 'near enough'?

PGmicstand · 12/10/2025 23:22

2 adults, 1 child

7 rulers of varying lengths and materials
2 plastic/fabric tape measures
2 retractable tape measures [for outdoor use]
1 metre stick with measurements

tigger1001 · 12/10/2025 23:25

More than a few rulers. Several metal tape measures as well as at least 5 sewing style ones. Im a crafter. Measuring is a way of life lol

ForPearlViper · 12/10/2025 23:31

Household of one and probably about a dozen measuring implements as a keen DIYer and crafter. All mine have the special property of becoming temporarily invisible after being used once, hence the requirement for multiples to maintain sanity.

echt · 12/10/2025 23:32

I live alone but these were accumulated when DH was alive and DD lived at home:
many rulers, plastic, wood and metal. Several are vintage
two steel measuring tapes
two fabric measuring tape in the sewing box.

One of the steel measuring tapes lives permanently in the kitchen drawer as you never know when measuring is needed.

buffybots · 12/10/2025 23:36

Single. I have a tape measure which I frequently need and then immediately lose
so its.. somewhere

Davros · 12/10/2025 23:38

The household is me and DD (22). We have at least one ruler we can lay our hands on, possibly more. We have about 5 tape measures, I like to have them everywhere, I’ve got one in the car too

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/10/2025 23:43

Two adults. Two tape measures - one in DH’s toolbox and a very ancient one with half the numbers rubbed off in my sewing box. There may be a ruler somewhere but I’m not sure.

crackofdoom · 12/10/2025 23:51

Single mum, with a job that involves constantly measuring things.

3.5 metal tape measures
1 sewing tape measure
1 1m plastic rule
1 1m metal rule
1 60cm metal rule
At least 3 30cm metal rules- and if any disappear I start to get twitchy and have to buy more.
Despite this (Although the cream of my stash is in the studio), when I sit down to draw something out I can usually only find a broken 6 inch plastic ruler with unicorns on that came out of a party bag.

crackofdoom · 12/10/2025 23:52

Incidentally, has anyone else ever mused over the possibility of a metal ruler making a handy emergency weapon? I reckon I could definitely fell an intruder with the metre long one.

Hummusanddipdip · 12/10/2025 23:55

2 adults, 2 children (aged 6 and 1)

Rulers - 2x 15cm and 1x 30cm
Tape measures - 3, 2x diy type and 1x dressmaker

PickAChew · 13/10/2025 00:04

That's what rotary cutters are for.

But never, ever my fabric scissors.

SabrinaThwaite · 13/10/2025 00:06

Just me and DH now (plus 1 DC during uni holidays). I think we might be a bit unusual though as we have:

A couple of tailors tape measures
4 x DIY steel tape measures
Several shatter proof school rulers (various lengths)
A Royal Mail parcel size checker ruler
Several engineers scale rulers (different scales)
2 x 30m tape measures
1 x 50m dip meter

WetFrames · 13/10/2025 01:00

2 adults

2 large retractable metal tape measures, one with our name on it in Sharpie so the builders didn't confuse it with theirs, and one that they left behind covered with irremovable tile cement

1 tiny retractable metal tape measure I keep in my handbag. Very useful when shopping for furniture.

Too many 30cm/12'' rulers to count in both wood and plastic. I remember my mind was blown when my boss at my first Saturday job in a shop told me to turn the ruler shaped side down when drawing a line to avoid smudging. 11 years at school and nobody had told me.

One wooden yardstick I keep in a stand with the walking sticks and umbrellas and use for anything that requires a poke from a distance. Often used to encourage mice out from behind the dresser.

3 soft tape measures, 1 permanently in sewing basket, 2 in whatever crochet project bags are on the go.

I'm sure DH has his own private stash. I don't get involved.

RitaIncognita · 13/10/2025 01:05

Two empty-nesters.

I'm not sure I can give an accurate count. I have two cloth tape measures in my sewing box and a small retractable metal measure that I keep in my handbag. I have several rulers, at least 3. DH has one of those folding carpenter's rule things, several retractable metal measures, and one of those high-tech laser ones that throw a bean of light and the measurement shows on a small screen. I think we also have a yard stick or two around here somewhere.
