Do you own a tape measure or ruler? Lighthearted poll

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 12/10/2025 21:19

In my household of 3 adults, between us we own at least 3 rulers and 2 tape measures.

Poll:

Composition of your household?
Own any rulers?
Own any tape measures?

I’m thinking if you have kids, you have rulers. If you have a husband or have ever done any DIY, you have a tape measure.

Reason for poll - I asked someone on Vinted for the measurements of a T-shirt and a) she didn’t know what I meant and b) after I said ‘just armpit to armpit’ she claimed not to have anything to measure with. So she lost the sale.

At least 5 metal tape measures, a soft one, and probably about 5 or 6 rulers.

And we still tend to measure things with our phone. There's an app for that.

Bergamotte · 12/10/2025 21:43

2 adults

1 small plastic ruler
2 metal 30 cm rulers
4 sewing tape measures
2 tape measures (one for DIY, one kept for Warhammer type gaming)

TheGreatWesternShrew · 12/10/2025 21:44

Composition - 2 adults (1 male, 1 female)
Ruler stats - 3, discovered in the stationary drawer
Tape measure stats - 3, two flexible one metal one for DIY.

I do have a husband and have done DIY. No children in the house… the rulers are ours. And we do use them, oddly.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 12/10/2025 21:44

2 adults. I have a metal tape measure which lives in my handbag, two cloth tape measures with my sewing stuff. DP has at least 2 metal tape measures, but can never find one as he never puts them away after using them and then can't find them. I have at least one plastic ruler and a metal ruler for DIY/decorating.

Tigerbalmshark · 12/10/2025 21:45

You know what I wish I had though! A laser tape measure. They look so cool (and are far less faff than a metal tape measure).

PeonyPatch · 12/10/2025 21:46

Couple, mid-30s and no children. We own tape measure but no rulers! Usually for measuring furniture.

shellyleppard · 12/10/2025 21:47

Myself, sons of 20 and 17. Rulers a few. Tape measures at least 4 .... but never when we need them 😂

Thissickbeat · 12/10/2025 21:48

Adult and 2 teens.
3 tape measures. (sewing kit type)

3 automatic tape measures for DIY / house stuff.

CantThinkOfAnotherUsernane · 12/10/2025 21:49

Philipthecat · 12/10/2025 21:50

Yes, multiple of all -rulers, diy tape measures, sewing tape measures.

KittyRannaldini · 12/10/2025 21:51

Me and a 7 year old.
One tape measure
One long metal extending tape measure
No rulers

LillyPJ · 12/10/2025 21:51

Just one adult (me). 5 tape measures.2 rulers.

hexsnidgett · 12/10/2025 21:52

2 adults, not sure if dh owns any rulers or tape measures.

I have 3 sewing measuring tapes (inc a little cow), 2 metal tape measures and about 8 rulers, plus stencils, sewing mats, sewing curves and protractors.
I love rulers and have to hold myself back from buying more, I usually have one in my bag.

Bluevelvetsofa · 12/10/2025 21:52

Rulers left over from years of teaching
Small tape measures for measuring knitting and crafts
Retractable tape measures for diy, measuring blinds, furniture etc.

DustyMaiden · 12/10/2025 21:52

2 metal
2 sewing
t square
at least 10 school rulers
2 people.

olympicsrock · 12/10/2025 21:52

Yes multiple but not sure I would always be able to lay my hands on one

Theunamedcat · 12/10/2025 21:53

So so many but can I find one? Noo

msmillicentcat · 12/10/2025 21:54

2 adults and 2 children, 1 of primary and 1 of secondary age. My secondary child loses her ruler within the first few weeks of term. Youngest has several. We also have a tape for sewing and at least 2 DIY metal ones. I also have a ruler for cutting against and there’s a metal one in the tool box.

CatherinedeBourgh · 12/10/2025 21:56

Theunamedcat · 12/10/2025 21:53

which is why we always end up using measure on the phone...same with level gauges.

EndlessDistraction · 12/10/2025 21:57

4 adults.
Many of each.

We have a special ruler in the kitchen drawer which is only for measuring depth of snow on the patio (it's a metal one that got a bit bent and is no use for anything else now). Then one or two 12" ones and loads of 6" ones from all the little stationery sets the DCs were ever given.

Tape measures - several metal DIY types as DH never puts them away and ends up buying new ones. A tiny crafting one given to me by late MIL. One or two other small ones acquired in DCs craft kits. A proper fabric roll-up one for measuring people with.

ReignOfError · 12/10/2025 21:58

2 retirees.

Several metal tape measures, from 5 to 15m.
Three or four cloth tape measures, for sewing etc
Two left-handed rulers, one in my study, one downstairs for me, and one grandchild
Two or three right-handed rulers, for the other four
Plus a laser measure and a (cheap and dubiously accurate) roller/wheel measuring thing.

Editrd because I forgot: four silicon mats with straight edge measurements and circles of various sizes for baking

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 12/10/2025 21:59

2 adults, 1 teen, 1 tween.
a bunch of rulers, in a variety of lengths, materials including some bendy.

At least 4 tape measures including DH’s proper DIY one, his sewing one, my very much loved bright green one that is used for planning all the things for DH to diy for me, and the new one he bought me when I thought mine was lost a couple of weeks ago. Happily mine turned up again.

I also discovered this weekend that the tool used to spread icing on the cake has measurements on the side. I used it to measure the size of the cake tins.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 12/10/2025 22:00

Three “soft” tape measures, two builders ones. One metal metre ruler, one plastic one for sewing, one small one.

TroysMammy · 12/10/2025 22:01

3 metal rulers
2 plastic but can't find one but it's somewhere in the house
2 rulers for sewing
1 handbag tape measure
1 dress making tape measure
1 10m long big boy tape measure and I know there are 2 other tape measures somewhere but my partner has had his mitts on them so they could be anywhere!

ohtowinthelottery · 12/10/2025 22:05

2 adult household.
We've got (at least) 1 x 30cm ruler, 2 tape measures (soft type) and 2 retractable steel rulers.
