Do you own a tape measure or ruler? Lighthearted poll

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 12/10/2025 21:19

In my household of 3 adults, between us we own at least 3 rulers and 2 tape measures.

Poll:

Composition of your household?
Own any rulers?
Own any tape measures?

I’m thinking if you have kids, you have rulers. If you have a husband or have ever done any DIY, you have a tape measure.

Reason for poll - I asked someone on Vinted for the measurements of a T-shirt and a) she didn’t know what I meant and b) after I said ‘just armpit to armpit’ she claimed not to have anything to measure with. So she lost the sale.

2 adults, 1 term, 1 pre-teen.
At least 5 x 15 rulers, 1 x 30cm roller. 2 x DIY tape measures. 2 x dressmakers tape measures. 2 solid steel rulers that live in thy garage. And, as another poster said, set square, protractor, compass for good measure.
I mostly use a dress maker tape measure for selling items on eBay.

HangryBrickShark · 12/10/2025 22:09

Sorry, not being pedantic but it's rule and not ruler.

A ruler is some who rules the country. A rule is a measure. Or so my teacher said when I was at skool 🤣🤣

BoobsOnTheMoon · 12/10/2025 22:10

1 adult, 1 teen.

At least 6 tape measures that I can think of (5 retractable in varying sizes, 1 cloth for sewing). Make that 7 if we are counting DS's "nose to tail" one which measures everything as varying sizes animals but doesn't have any numbers 😂

3 rulers. Probably many more in DS's room as I feel like he loses and replaces them often.

The Cambridge English Dictionary disagrees with you...

Even if I didn't have one, I could probably have guessed an answer to your Vinted question because I still can estimate the size of a vinyl album.

Letsskidaddle · 12/10/2025 22:13

Yes to both, and many of each!

Missing the point but the seller could’ve improvised with a bit of A4 paper, slices of bread, even a couple of bananas to give you some idea.

Or loo roll, that’s a (bog) standard size, “yeah, it’s 10 sheets wide…” 😂

Seawolves · 12/10/2025 22:13

Me and a 5 yr old

3 rulers inc a steel yard rule

4 retractable steel tape measures and one fabric tape measure

MyIvyGrows · 12/10/2025 22:18

At least a couple of rulers, and probably 3-4 tape measures. Maybe more of each.

You be as pedantic as you like, I love a bit of pedantry. But my father always used to absolutely berate me for saying ruler instead of rule. And for this reason, I ALWAYS call it a ruler and I don’t care that it’s wrong 😁

(He was also a fan of “it’s not a dice, it’s a die!” and “they’re not scissors, it’s a pair of scissors!”)

Yes!! Honestly it wound me up no end. I really wanted that T-shirt. She could’ve said “it’s four forks wide or something, at least I’d have had an idea 🤣

Dh, me and 3x adult dc.

We have more rulers, tape measures, sewing tapes, straight edges than any household could possibly use. Do you think we can find them when we need them though?

MagicLoop · 12/10/2025 22:26

Yes, several of each

Ponderingwindow · 12/10/2025 22:27

I make all sorts of things. I have tape measures of various types, rulers, squares, t squares,
soft tape measures, circular tape measures, digital laser measures, protractors, and electronic calipers of various sizes. Many of these I have duplicates in multiple places in my house because I use them so often I can’t be bothered to walk to another room to get what I need.

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 12/10/2025 22:28

So many different measuring things and I love how a lot of you are distinguishing between plastic and wood or metal, and including ring sizers and cake and foot measurers!

Due to a PP mentioning it I have remembered I also have a metal metre long ruler but no idea where it is.

And another poster mentioned a laser tape measure and that is going on my wishlist!

I didn’t know there was a measuring app!! Or left and right handed rulers!

So it seems from my highly scientific study, that literally everyone owns something they can use to measure a T-shirt and this Vinted seller was an oddity. Thank you all for your stats!

2 adults, 1 (small) child.

Rulers - 5? DH is a teacher so has been given a few personalised ones, LO has an Ironman one and I still have the battered one from my uni days.

Tape Measures - for a tool box - 2. One mine, one DHs.

Also have maybe 4 of the soft ones used for measuring your body from various sewing kits.

FloofyKat · 12/10/2025 22:31

Just me, no children.
I have several rulers including a steel rule. At least two cloth / plastic tape measures and a couple of DIY metal tape measures.

limegreenheart · 12/10/2025 22:32

1 adult.

At least 3 soft/cloth tape measures: one sits in a little bowl in the kitchen, one goes in my handbag, one lounges in the (rarely used) "sewing basket". This is what I'd use to check the dimensions of a garment I was selling online.

One hard retractable tape measure which runs about 20 meters when fully extended.

A hand-held mini laser distance meter that casts an LED light and calculates the distance between the light on the device and the cast/target light.

I don't think I could lay hands on a ruler, which does not mean there aren't any. But I don't recall ever buying a ruler as an adult, and if I did have one I'd probably use it rarely if ever for measuring and mostly for when I need to draw a straight line.

Woofie7 · 12/10/2025 22:33

Many many of both

Sgtmajormummy · 12/10/2025 22:39

3 adults
Too many rulers to count. I have a bit of a fixation.
? 5 dressmaking tapes, inches and cm
a bendy ruler for measuring necklines etc
2 wooden folding rulers
3 retractable metal tape measures
a 15m tape that you manually wind back
?10 assorted school rulers, from 10cm to 50, including a technical drawing set
?20 Quilting rulers and cutting mat

The oddities
A surveyor’s ruler from Clifton Suspension Bridge. Very confusing.
A paper guillotine
A credit card sized multi tool and an RNLI pen with a spirit level, too
A tape measure in Chinese inches. They’re bigger than imperial inches- I thought I was going mad.
And a ruler/bookmark in my Filofax which has often come in useful.

TheWibble · 12/10/2025 22:43

1 adult and 1 child.
6 rulers
1 flexible tape measure
4 diy tape measures

StripedPillowcase · 12/10/2025 22:43

One adult.

I own several 30 cm rulers (wood/ metal/plastic), 15cm rulers, a scale rule, a 30m cloth tape measure, 8m and 5m metal tape measures, at least 5 cloth tape measures for sewing, and a wood yard/metre stick.

I use all of these for work.

PragmaticIsh · 12/10/2025 22:45

We've found the key to being able to find a tape measure is to have a number of them, in different rooms, with the name of the room written on the side of the tape measure case. Then it has to LIVE in that room, that's the law!

2 adults, 2 children (almost teens).

Five tape measures.
Six rulers.
Two fabric sewing measures.
Two steel rules.
One laser measuring device.

PandaG · 12/10/2025 22:47

2 adults - DC have left home but some of their detritus remains. At least 6 30 cm rulers, a couple of 15 cm rulers in pencil cases, 3 or 4 soft tape measures - in knitting bag, crochet stuff, with sewing machine, and at least one metal tape measure in with DIY stuff.

Grawlix · 12/10/2025 22:47

Two adults

At least 4 dressmaking tape-measures.

At least 3 metal tape-measures, plus a laser one.

At least 4 ordinary rulers measuring inches and centimetres.

One very long ruler for blocking knitting/crochet.

Several plastic measuring rulers for cutting fabric that are marked in cm.

Several cutting-mats also marked in cm.

(Plus, like @Sgtmajormummy, assorted miscellany like the unexpectedly useful Filofax ruler)

Anything that needs measuring is well catered-for in this house.

DramaLlamacchiato · 12/10/2025 22:48

A few rulers, I have one son doing graphics at school and the other doing a maths degree. My husband has a metal ruler and a DIY tape measure. I have 2 or 3 soft ones.
