Do you own a tape measure or ruler? Lighthearted poll

NinePoppadomsAndASaagAloo · 12/10/2025 21:19

In my household of 3 adults, between us we own at least 3 rulers and 2 tape measures.

Poll:

Composition of your household?
Own any rulers?
Own any tape measures?

I’m thinking if you have kids, you have rulers. If you have a husband or have ever done any DIY, you have a tape measure.

Reason for poll - I asked someone on Vinted for the measurements of a T-shirt and a) she didn’t know what I meant and b) after I said ‘just armpit to armpit’ she claimed not to have anything to measure with. So she lost the sale.

About 50 rulers and 10 tape measures

DeanElderberry · 13/10/2025 08:27

Just me.

Regular 6" 15cm plastic rule, 50cm steel ruler, several retractable steel rules because I keep losing them, a few tape measures, a 100m tape that stretched a little so the engineer pal it used to belong to was getting rid. Slightly excessive, but useful at the moment when I'm trying to work how/if to move my kitchen into another room.

dontcomeatme · 13/10/2025 08:30

2 steal measuring tapes, 2 soft tapes for body measurements, only 1 ruler. My kids are young though x

EBearhug · 13/10/2025 08:40

1 adult.

1 retractable DIY type measure.
1 tailor's tape measure. I also have Mum's, but it's inches only, the end with the metal bit has fallen off through overseas, so it starts at a rather frayed 2", but can't quite throw it out.
1 1m long metal rule i use for craft stuff, cutting along straight lines etc.
In the depths of my craft box, pretty sure I also have a 15cm plastic rule and 30cm plastic rule, which claims to be shatterproof,) from school.
Oh, and a 1m long tailor's tape that was a cracker prize.

I also have some sewing & craft patterns etc which have a short rule printed down the side, but not really a useful thing.

One person household. At least 3 tape measures and about a dozen or so rulers (6" and 10") but I was a supply teacher so I also have loads of spare pens, pencils, coloured pens and pencils.

ELO10538 · 13/10/2025 17:15

3 adults. Too many of both to count but certainly both in double figures.

Missymarple · 13/10/2025 17:33

2 adults.

2 retractable DIY tape measures, only one of which retracted too hard and caused a scar on my DH's hand which he's shyly proud of.

At least 5 soft tape measures - I am a knitter and frequently a tape measure unravels and escapes under the couch so I have stand bys on hand.

No rulers, can use a knitting needle if need to draw a straight line 😄

Oldraver · 13/10/2025 19:12

Three adults. I have several of the DIY retractable tape measures (as I'm always loosing them) a wooden and metal metre rule, two fabric tapes, one is retractable, smaller metal ruler

OH has a couple of DIY tape measures he hides from me

I know DS has a few rulers

Missey85 · 13/10/2025 19:19

I love alone and have neither 😊

amicisimma · 13/10/2025 19:21

2 adults.

33 rulers downstairs, and goodness knows how many more upstairs.

At least 11 tape measures of various sorts, and my favourite one is missing so that may or may not be in the house somewhere.

8TinyToeBeans · 13/10/2025 19:23

2 adults.

Probably around 8 rulers kicking around. 4 set squares. 1 metal meter stick. 2 fabric sewing measuring tapes. 2 diy tape measures.

I have 3 rulers on my desk at any given time - I’m an engineer. I then have some less favoured ones that are back up rulers. 😂

FOJN · 13/10/2025 19:28

I live alone.

Several 6 inch plastic rulers.
One 12 inch plastic ruler
One fancy 12 inch metal ruler
1 wooden 'yard stick'
1 100cm metal measuring stick
2 retractable metal tape measures
more dress making tape measures than I can count
Various quilters/dress making rulers

Looks like I'm pretty well equipped for measuring things, just short of a laser tape measure!

Butteredtoast55 · 13/10/2025 20:28

Three sewing tape measures, four rulers including a really good metal triangular one and at least five retractable tape measures. We've also got a laser measurer but that's not much use for measuring a t-shirt!

You be as pedantic as you like, I love a bit of pedantry. But my father always used to absolutely berate me for saying ruler instead of rule. And for this reason, I ALWAYS call it a ruler and I don’t care that it’s wrong 😁

(He was also a fan of “it’s not a dice, it’s a die!” and “they’re not scissors, it’s a pair of scissors!”)

Lol 🤣🤣

Its also once or twice and not one more time or two more times, drives me insane! Maybe I'm old fashioned.

TheOliveFinch · 15/10/2025 17:46

Several but still can never find one when I need it

Are you my Vinted seller?? 😂

Seriously do you never need to measure anything? I am intrigued. You’re the only person on this thread so far without a single measuring implement!
