Anybody else doing Sober October?

Trodincatsickagain · 29/09/2025 16:54

I know there’s been a long running thread for years for dry January but I fancy having a break through October, in preparation for Xmas, give the liver a break beforehand - that is all meant very tongue in cheek 😜

Anyone fancy joining?

Thanks @Daffydaffodil25& @Trodincatsickagainand @Nearlyadoctor
We are on a cruise to the Arctic circle - yes really, in November! so we anticipate thick coats & woolly hats Grin Also hoping for the Northern lights & whales & dolphins 🐬
Managed a pint of beer last night, nothing more; really enjoyed it but didn’t want another, which was unheard of for me & holidays.
I will report back on drinks, dolphins & natural wonders! Take care & enjoy your days.

@HotTiredDog - have an amazing trip ❤️.

Well done on the single pint, that’s always my downfall one leads to another and another and another 😂😂

Daffydaffodil25 · 04/11/2025 17:11

@Trodincatsickagain
It definitely helps having DH doing it as well. I don’t think I’d be as strong if he was opening a bottle of wine and drinking it in front of me 😂
Hope everyone has had a good day.

Trodincatsickagain · 05/11/2025 07:59

Morning!

So it’s still a dry November so far and hopefully I can keep on going. Not sure now whether I’ll drink Friday evening as originally planned? Funny isn’t it, when I wake first thing and feel so much better I am adamant that I want to keep this feeling, it’s just as the day progresses and all of life’s stresses hit that I start to wobble, but I’ll see how I feel Friday. One day at a time I guess!

Have a great day all!

Hi everyone, hope you’re managing a nice reduced A or even AF week.
Although I’m on holiday & therefore free of all normal rules, I’m definitely drinking less than in any other holiday ever!

HotTiredDog · 06/11/2025 21:45

Hi,
apparently this year is a good year for Sloes. So, if anyone wants to try AF sloe gin-ish then it’s time to give it a go - freezing the sloes overnight is just as good as pricking them with a pin, allegedly! then adding to the liquid with sugar & leaving in a cold place for a month, inverting the bottle daily(ish).
Of course, as it is AF you’ll have to be careful that you don’t induce fermentation with the sugar!
🤞that it works
(I shan’t be trying it, can’t stand the stuff, but thought an adventurous super-sober-star may fancy a go!)
Hope all is well & you’re all as AF as you want to be x

Daffydaffodil25 · 07/11/2025 10:08

Nearly the weekend! I’m pleased with how well my first week has gone. The thought of a glass of wine fleetingly entered my head last night but I had a fresh orange instead so was pleased. Hope everyone else is pleased with their af or nearly af week.

Trodincatsickagain · 08/11/2025 09:06

Morning All!

Well, I broke my dry streak last night, almost a bottle of wine but quite low in units, 7, so I don’t feel too bad this morning and I had a really good evening, so no regrets, and actually it’s made me more determined to try and stay AF as much as I can so that I can enjoy Xmas and have a drink or two!

Thanks for the info re: sloe gin @HotTiredDog, I’m not a gin drinker but know plenty that are! I got very drunk on my DF’s bottle of Beefeater Gin as a 17 year old and spent the whole evening crying followed by a morning of being very sick 😆 just one whiff of gin sends me right back! 🤢

I hope you’re having a really fantastic time on your cruise and that’s great news that you’re moderating.

@Daffydaffodil25 That’s brilliant that you’ve got that first week under your belt, and, with only a fleeting thought for a glass of wine - how are you feeling, have you noticed any benefits yet?

Hope everyone else is doing good? I won’t do a roll call 😄 but you know who you are!

Have a good day everyone!

Morning. I haven’t noticed any changes yet @Trodincatsickagain . It’s been good waking up without that fuzzy head feeling though. I’m glad you enjoyed your wine and you feel ok. That’s what I’m aiming for. Not to stop completely but to have less and enjoy what I have. I think the mindset of I’m not having any alcohol all month seems easier to deal with than saying I’m not drinking until Friday because if I’d had a stressy day or just felt like a drink midweek then I’d have just said f it. Have a good weekend.

I agree - I found it easier not battling with trying to moderate when I first started having the AF periods. Knowing that for a month alcohol was totally off the table was actually quite a relief and easier to settle into.

All good here thank you @Trodincatsickagain. DH bought some Diet Coke to do Jack Daniels and coke last night so I had a couple. Worse night sleep in ages, although I think it’s the caffeine in the coke that makes it so bad in my case.
woke up feeling ok though. No other plans to drink this weekend and if he has another tonight I shan’t be joining him.
Gorgeous day here so just off out with dog and my latest audiobook.
Will do some cooking later as dd is coming home from Uni for 3 nights tomorrow and I’m so excited to see her 🥰

Texanchilli · 09/11/2025 13:14

I had a proper night out last night. I was out drinking until 2am. This is unusual for me. I had 5 glasses of wine, I specifically asked for smalls but they were all different sizes when they arrived so it’s hard to know how much I had! More than a bottle I think. Anyway I feel rotten. Not hungover, but tired, anxious, sad, really flat. It’s made me question whether I want to drink ever again.

HotTiredDog · 09/11/2025 14:25

@TexanchilliFab that you had a good night out.
Since @Trodincatsickagainhelped to get us motivated, I think we’ve discovered a whole new way of thinking about alcohol. It’s so freeing!
🤗

Daffydaffodil25 · 09/11/2025 16:22

@Texanchilli
It’s a shame you feel like that today. It really does make you think about how much you drink and if it’s worth it. I want to cut down and I’m hoping this break helps with that. I’m sure I’ll have the odd heavy night in the future though. Hope you feel better tomorrow.

Trodincatsickagain · 11/11/2025 07:59

Morning All - flying visit and just checking in to say that I’m still feeling positive and the weekend hasn’t derailed me.

Hope you’re feeling better now @Texanchilli and sounds like a positive has come from your night out. @HotTiredDog hope you’re having a fantastic time on your cruise and keeping warm! @Nearlyadoctor I do enjoy the odd vodka and coke but like you I’m then up half the night thanks to the coke even if I only had a couple. How’s it going @Daffydaffodil25 is it good to start the week clear headed and rested?

Thinking about Xmas and I’ve decided that I won’t be buying any spirits this year. I normally do a bottle of vodka and a coffee liqueur (it’s only me that drinks it), but I don’t want any alcohol hanging around, so have been looking at the ready made cans of cocktail and will buy myself a couple as a treat and just a bottle of wine for the week - that way I can’t do too much damage and hopefully keep control.

Have a good day/week everyone and catch up soon!!! 💪

Hi @Trodincatsickagain, it’s still going well ☺️. Haven’t noticed any change on the scales yet which is a bit disappointing but hopefully there will be soon. I’m going to drink alcohol in December but hopefully with a lot more alcohol free days. I am enjoying a clear head every morning.

HotTiredDog · 12/11/2025 10:01

@Trodincatsickagain I just want to thank you for this thread (again!)
Despite being 9 days into a cruise & surrounded by bars, the number of A-drinks I’ve had is still in single figures!
That wouldn’t have happened without this thread, it’s a simple as that.
No wine, no cocktails, no fizz - just lime-&-soda, water, beer or lager. And I’m choosing when I drink, it’s not calling to me every time I pass a bar.
Thanks to all who have been so supportive, too 💐

Daffydaffodil25 · 15/11/2025 10:08

Well, we’re half way through November. Hope everyone has had a good week. I’m still going strong, have fancied a glass of wine a few times but have been able to put it out of my mind quickly. Weather has been awful here the last couple of days, windy, wet and cold. Have a good weekend all!

Nearlyadoctor · 15/11/2025 13:19

Well DH & I shared a bottle of wine last night , he had more than me but I still woke with vertigo .
when will I learn - drinking is not for me 😂😂

Same here - I had some Baileys, only a couple but good measures! and I feel slightly nauseous this morning and generally yuk. I’m also noticing that my autoimmune illness is starting to nag at me again, so I really need to make a concerted effort to not slip back into old habits.

That’s great news that it’s all going so well @Daffydaffodil25 - it sounds like you’re enjoying the break and handling those sneaky wine urges well.

@HotTiredDog I’m so pleased to hear that you’ve managed the cruise only drinking beer and lager! I’m not sure that I would be that virtuous faced with all those lovely cocktails and array of drinks, I think I’d also be in the F’it I’m on holiday mode too, so really well done!

Have a good day everyone and get ready for the chilly week ahead!

I'm going ok! But did buy mulled wine from Lidl yesterday which is very tempting considering the weather! Still not lost any weight though....

Started sober November hoping to keep going for at least 4 weeks
Started last week.

I haven’t lost any weight either which has surprised me.

So, last night I had my first alcohol since August 31. I had a small glass of wine at a meal to celebrate my daughter and her friend's 18th birthday. I enjoyed it, but had no desire for a second...or third, which would never have been the case before...
