Anybody else doing Sober October?

I know there’s been a long running thread for years for dry January but I fancy having a break through October, in preparation for Xmas, give the liver a break beforehand - that is all meant very tongue in cheek 😜

Anyone fancy joining?

I’ll join you - drinking far to much recently

Trodincatsickagain · 29/09/2025 17:13

It’s so easy to slide into that nightly drinking and one glass so easily becomes a bottle if you’re not careful. I’m a weekend drinker but it feels like it’s taking me all week to get over the older I get. I’m so looking forward to waking refreshed and getting some good sleep behind me.

I giving it some serious consideration

You’ve got just over 24 hours to make your mind up 😄 would be great to have you along for the ride!

Yep I start the week of with good intentions - tend to travel to London on a Thursday and when hubby picks me up from the train station we go to the pub to decompress……

Aah I was planning on doing sober October but just realized I've a wedding so if I can have 1 day off for good behavior I'll join.

I think we can allow that! 😄 and enjoy your wedding.

Absolutely - full disclosure I have a funeral mid October and if I want a drink that day - I will do xx

MissyElif · 30/09/2025 10:59

Yes, absolutely. Great time of year to do it - much easier than dreary January. I'm also going to be doing the Couch 2 5k running app alongside going sober for a much needed reset!! Want to find some nice non-alcoholic drinks so I can still 'join in' on social events but have more energy for exercise and feel better the next day.

Nearlyadoctor · 30/09/2025 11:09

Yes I’m in - definitely need a break.

I agree - I think it’s a good time to have a break as there’s something to look forward to ahead, unlike dry Jan which is all a bit bleak. I also love running (more a poodle) at this time of year, seems to suit my body better, so good luck with the C2 5k and enjoy it without a hangover!

Fantastic! The more the better as we can all hopefully help each other during those tricky times.

@Trodincatsickagain - yes I think it might be a struggle especially as Dd has just gone to Uni and I’m missing her like mad 😢

bluesky9 · 30/09/2025 11:31

I'd love to join

Oh sympathies- I know that one only too well. It’s a really hard time and you just need to go with it and have a good cry when needed and then of course be all happy and bright when you speak with them! Have you thought about what you might do in the evenings to try and fill that void?

@Trodincatsickagain - yes I was blubbering wreck on Saturday ( dropped her Friday) cleaned out all the kitchen cupboards , cooked and drunk red wine 😂.
It does now seem to come in waves, on the bright side the dog has had so many walks and I’m back at work full time this week. A few box sets and books lined up as well.

Nearlyadoctor · 30/09/2025 11:50

Welcome 👋 @bluesky9

chachahide · 30/09/2025 11:52

Great idea, I'd like to join, I'm drinking too much and have tried to quit a few times... accountability would be good!

Me too. I recently had a 6 week break but went straight back to the weekend binge.I just don’t seem to be able to get a handle on the moderation side. I drink because I like feeling tipsy, one glass spaces throughout the week I know is never going to work for me, so I think to be honest I’m looking at quitting too.

Trodincatsickagain · 01/10/2025 08:46

Good morning all! Are we ready and raring to go? I’m ok today as it’s the weekend that I drink but I know come Friday evening I’ll be itching. I’ve had a week off already as I’ve been on antibiotics so it’s going to be a 5 week sober October for me.

Has anybody got any substitutes in for tonight? I found that I didn’t need them or particularly like the AF wine but I know that they help a lot of abstainers.

OP posts:
HotTiredDog · 01/10/2025 08:49

Yes. Had too much last evening so after a disturbed night’s sleep I’m looking forward to a bit of time off. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself now… by this evening I will want to start again, so need some strong willpower to get through day one.

Trodincatsickagain · 01/10/2025 08:59

I know for me that focusing on how much better I’m going to feel physically always helps. If you can get hang on tight and get through those first 3 days, it all starts to become a little more manageable. That feeling when you wake first thing and realise that you didn’t drink the night before is priceless and whilst you might not quite be springing out of bed in the early days, being hangover free is such a good feeling.

OP posts:
Nearlyadoctor · 01/10/2025 09:47

I had a G&T last night and now that’s it.
I’ll drink sparkling water in the evenings as not keen on AF, although don’t mind a beer Moretti but that’s more summer than winter ❄️

Trodincatsickagain · 01/10/2025 09:56

I’m impressed that you only had one G&T @Nearlyadoctor 😄, for me, unless it was a good 3 it wouldn’t be worth it.
