Anybody else doing Sober October?

Trodincatsickagain · 29/09/2025 16:54

I know there’s been a long running thread for years for dry January but I fancy having a break through October, in preparation for Xmas, give the liver a break beforehand - that is all meant very tongue in cheek 😜

Anyone fancy joining?

Hands up , DH brought a bottle of wine home he was given and we have opened it.
I am actually enjoying a glass but I think it’s because it feels like a treat rather than routine. I had previously got to the stage where I’d pour a glass of wine not enjoy it but still have another, waiting for that hit.
It means in total I will have had 3 non AF days in October which is a massive improvement.
Definitely up for carrying on - as it’s definitely been thought provoking, and made me focus. Also as@Trodincatsickagain pointed out earlier we feel accountable to each other. It would be easy just to pretend I haven’t had a glass of wine tonight but that would make me feel that I was dishonest to everyone else on here when we’ve all tried so hard.

Perhaps our next thread should be Nearly No Alcohol November 😂

😆 Perfect!

Enjoy your glass of wine! It sounds like youre being more mindful and when you’re not having it nightly, it does become a treat and more enjoyable!

Brilliant idea!
My sisters recommended alcohol free Guinness. I'm really enjoying it!

Trodincatsickagain · 28/10/2025 19:53

However, I think it’s time that I hand the baton over to the next soberista! Auditions will be held on the 31st 😆😆

Wine enjoyed - now having a sparkling water whilst watching Bake Off.
I’m confident though tomorrow will be back on the wagon which is a step forward .

Story: DParents came over. Had a beer out of habit / devilment - I thought I could… had a 2nd. Didn’t have time for anything to eat. They had red wine. I had toast when they left at 9:30 ish. Thought red wine was a good idea. Oh no, it wasn’t. I am filled with shame.

@HotTiredDog Don’t beat yourself up, you’ve done so well this month and unfortunately, it’s so easy to do! It goes down so nicely at the time but then makes you feel so crap and horrible the next day! BUT no shame and It’s so good that everyone is still posting even after having a drink and slowly we will and are changing those habits.

OP posts:
Nearlyadoctor · 29/10/2025 06:20

Woken up feeling slightly queasy- bearing in mind we didn’t even drink a whole bottle between us. I did enjoy the wine but wish I hadn’t bothered 😕
@HotTiredDog hope you’re ok this morning? At least this reminds us why we don’t want to drink and certainly not get back into it being a habit we don’t even think about.

Ive got clinic 1.30pm -7pm today so am getting up shortly and taking the dog out for sone fresh air ( more for me than the dog ). Will do sone jobs, shower and head in.

Onwards everyone - today’s another day.

Trodincatsickagain · 29/10/2025 08:55

Day 29 - And yes, today is a new day and a fresh start!

I’m glad that you posted this morning @Nearlyadoctor, I think the more we can post and be descriptive about how we feel after a night of alcohol, even just a couple of glasses, the more we have to look back on as evidence the next time we’re tempted. I know that it certainly helps me, especially at the moment when I’m constantly tempted by that glass of 🍷

I hate that queasy feeling the next morning, my sugar levels are always a bit out of whack too and I want to keep eating to stabilise them, but I hope that the walk clears the head a bit and that the day goes quickly for you!

I hope everyone else is doing ok and hi 👋 to anyone else that may have been following along and I hope has found this thread helpful.

Have a good day peeps!

Keep on keeping on. 💪

Hello everyone, how are you?

Clinic must be nearly finished, Nearly, I guess you’re on your last patient - 🥳

I hope your day was good - just so you know, mine would have been a lot better if I hadn’t had wine last night!

Goodness knows why I did, there was absolutely no justifiable reason behind it (is there ever?) I think I just saw a part-drunk bottle and poured some to use it up - how utterly stupid!!
As a result I had a heck of a hangover & my gastritis is back 🤬
And I’m beating myself up. Interestingly there was no anxiety, which made a change.

(Part of the cause of the intense hangover was Friday’s GA. I forgot about that, to my own detriment.)

Hope you all enjoy a relaxing evening & stay sober, cos alcohol ain’t our friend!

Trodincatsickagain · 29/10/2025 20:16

Hope you feel better tomorrow @HotTiredDog after a good sleep and no beating yourself up!

I’m still hanging on in and just about to watch a film called Pearl, gotta have a bit of Halloween horror! 🎃

Have a good evening All!

OP posts:
HotTiredDog · 30/10/2025 12:11

Hello, yes I’m much better today thanks; sleep quality without alcohol is much, much better than with!

Can’t be doing with those Halloween films, TrodIn - I reckon there’s enough scary stuff in real life without adding more, but if you enjoy it then that’s fine (weirdo! Wink)

Hope everyone else slept well & is having a good day StarStar

Trodincatsickagain · 30/10/2025 17:58

Evening! - Almost 😅 How’s everyone doing?

Well, we’ve almost made it! How many of us will still be AF tomorrow evening as it’s a Friday and day 31 I wonder 😄. I intend to be but the weekend after next I’ve got a social event so I have decided that I will have a drink then, but after that, just keep doing what I’m doing and trying to make sure that there are several weeks between drinking, with the hope that I eventually get tired of the whole thing. (Wishful thinking!) Who knows… just one day at a time and I’m definitely enjoying not having to deal with 3 day hangovers!

Hope you all have a good evening!

Am I the only person who hasn't got improved sleep???

Trodincatsickagain · 30/10/2025 18:17

Remind me @hels71 - how long have you been AF? I know for me last time that it took a good few weeks before it started to improve and to be honest, a good month before I was waking feeling refreshed.

OP posts:
HotTiredDog · 30/10/2025 18:25

@hels71are there any other factors that are influencing your sleep? for example I’m not excluding the times when I wake up with peri night sweats.

TrodIn, please congratulate yourself on being able to say that you are choosing to drink in 9 days time, with the implications that you are completely in control of it - rather than the other way around - and are intending to be AF at least most, if not all, of the time until then!

Trodincatsickagain · 30/10/2025 18:33

That’s a good way of looking at it @HotTiredDog and hopefully what I’m aiming for. I feel like finally after all these years that something is changing with how I view alcohol and it’s been easier this year to have periods of AF, but I’ll never be complacent, it’s a slippery, devious bugger! 😄

I've been AF for almost 2 months. Last drink was August 31st. I have finally come out the other side of the night sweats, so who knows why my sleep is so bad.

Has it happened since you’ve stopped drinking? Seems really unfair when you’ve done so well AF wise to then be plagued with bad sleep. Could it be stress related - Do you have a lot going on at the moment?

I’m sure you’ve done all the usual, no caffeine after 2pm, get out for a walk/exercise every day. I find since the menopause that I have to sleep with the windows open slightly, if it’s too warm I just can’t go off.

Nearlyadoctor · 30/10/2025 20:28

Evening everyone - can’t quite believe it’s the 31st tomorrow as it seemed such a distant goal post at the beginning.
Im pleased I only had 3 non AF days in October , which must be the least I’ve drunk for a long time.
I had said I’d let myself drink on Saturday as we’re out with friends but tbh I’d be quite happy driving.
I am looking forward to Christmas type drinks like Baileys, Sherry or a glass of Fizz but really hoping I can just enjoy them . I’m going to buy more Nozeco and AF beer as well.
What I seem to have totally lost is any craving for White wine . I did enjoy the red the other night but haven’t felt like I need anymore iykwim.
Let’s hope this is the start for all of us of being much more mindful about what we drink. I went to Tesco today and they had 25% off 6 bottles of wine. Previously I would have bought some as a good deal , today it wasn’t even a struggle to just ignore it .
Well done everyone who’s stuck with the thread throughout the month ❤️

Thursa · 30/10/2025 22:17

On the wine again last night as it was eldests birthday. I did start out with a cocktail but couldn’t drink it as it was too strong.
