Anybody else doing Sober October?

I know there’s been a long running thread for years for dry January but I fancy having a break through October, in preparation for Xmas, give the liver a break beforehand - that is all meant very tongue in cheek 😜

Anyone fancy joining?

Morning TrodIn,
Nah, you are definitely not Old!! So pleased that you had a good night’s sleep - DCat decided that our family sleep was going to be disturbed by them (a) setting off the alarm at 4am (how?!!?) and (b) when they’d been allowed upstairs, proceeding to knock things off shelves to signify their need to go back out again at 6am 🤬😹Apart from that the sleep was good quality!

We’re all flippin amazing for making it this far with so few slips; being AF isn’t a doddle after all, especially with the many & varied stressors of modern life. Go us!!

(And yours was the 400th post - wow!!)

Decorators just left, feeling so tempted to open the ‘Christmas Sherry’ just fancy that hit. This is the time I find difficult tea ready for the oven and DH not home for another half an hour.

Trodincatsickagain · 27/10/2025 18:58

You’ll be ok once you’ve eaten! Can you just hang on in and remind yourself how close you are to the end now? I’m struggling too tonight and keep thinking of a lovely 🍷 but fortunately I have none in - we can get through this one together!

@Trodincatsickagain - have stayed strong , just eaten tea and as you say am hopefully out the other side .
I hope you’re doing ok too? I have no wine in the house either hence fancying opening the Christmas Sherry xx

AyrshireTryer · 27/10/2025 19:53

I don't need that negativity in my life.

You’re not to touch that bottle till Xmas 🎄 - this is why I don’t trust myself to buy anything special too soon beforehand because I always eat/drink it and then have to replace it all. It gets so expensive! 😆😆

I know every year I have to buy 2 or 3 bottles each of sherry and Baileys 😂😂

HotTiredDog · 27/10/2025 21:03

Evening. There must be something about Mondays! I've just had a Leffe blonde Zero, which was quite pleasant although being only a 250ml bottle didn't last long at all (& it was a bit of a rip off too)
Meanwhile, we have a wine rack with about a dozen bottles in and about 20 pints of beer, lager & cider in the utility room - not quite sure why, it's something I've always done. Perhaps perversely I think that if I run out then I must have a problem...

Trodincatsickagain · 27/10/2025 21:12

I might get some AF beer in for Xmas - I don’t drink lager/beer because I get so full up drinking it but I do like the occasional one.

It would be fatal if I had a wine rack, I would definitely not have the self restraint to not open a bottle and have a glass when I fancied it. I’m the same with chocolate, I try and only buy it on the day and not have loads in the house, I just dont have the willpower!

We normally always keep a lot of wine in. Tbh it was an aspirational thing from growing up, I always wanted to be like my dad and step mum who had a decent wine rack and a box of wine in the fridge. I think it was a monetary thing of thinking when I could spend freely on alcohol I’d made it !! Funny the things we aim for in life 🙄🙄

Trodincatsickagain · 27/10/2025 21:42

My parents did a lot of entertaining and had a drinks cabinet filled with just about every spirit and liquor you could think of. I am pretty sure that my liking for alcohol stems from there. As a child me and DB would sneak sips out of the sweet liquor bottles and I know that I was definitely tipsy on occasion - absolutely shocking when I look back on that now. Funny enough, my dc never, or rarely saw me drink when they were younger and they rarely drink themselves.

Much the same here - sounds a very similar childhood. DB & I used to go down early the morning after a dinner party to see what drinks, nibbles and after eights were left . There was also a very strong smell of cigars , which funnily enough I loved the smell of.

HotTiredDog · 27/10/2025 22:10

I was a bit worried that you’d gone all American with your Liquor, TrodIn!

Yes, I know what you mean about the smell of cigars, Nearly - I liked a faint aroma the following morning, definitely not finding the ashtray!

As kids, my sister & I were allowed a Snowball at Christmas: the weakest, fizziest ever, just enough advocaat to colour the lemonade - oh but the glamour!!

Nearlyadoctor · 28/10/2025 06:08

@Trodincatsickagain Beer Moretti ( not sure if I’ve spelt that right) AF is very nice. I had it a few times over the summer .

Trodincatsickagain · 28/10/2025 06:59

Day 28!

Good morning All,

I hope everyone is feeling good? Whether you’ve made it this far, or gave it a good shot and managed some AF days under your belt, it’s all a positive! Let us know how you got on. I know it’s easy to fall off threads once you’ve had a drink, I’ve done that many a time myself!

Thanks for the recommendation@Nearlyadoctor, I will have a google and try some for Xmas.

You’ll certainly remember me for my candid peel and my fondness for the liquor as a kid @HotTiredDog 🤣🤣

Here’s to a good day everyone and keep on keeping on to that finish line! 🏃‍♂️ 💪

My DF went through a phase of smoking cigars too - he was banished to his study by my DM if he wanted one and I remember opening the door and trying to spot where he was through the smoke 😆.

My Dad always had cigars at Christmas too!
I'm quite good with not drinking the Christmas alcohol before Christmas. I do however always get two tubs of celebrations. One for Christmas, and one " to replace the tub for Christmas that we've already eaten!! "

This thread really is a great place for admitting to Guilty Secrets!
Trying to remember if I have any 😉

(How about buying lots of bars of chocolate for the local trick or treaters, confident in the knowledge that they aren’t going to be needed? Someone has to eat them all!)

HotTiredDog · 28/10/2025 14:26

I know we’re not at the finishing line yet - still 10% of October to go! - but following on from other comments, how about a creating a thread for subsequent months?
I’d be interested, as this one has certainly made me accountable both to myself & you all - I feel supported here, not like an addict or a freak, which is a wonderful sensation!

darkmoor · 28/10/2025 15:38

This thread and you all have been a godsend to me too. You have all made the difference between normal on/off/eventually give up in sober October, to this one being a huge shift to nearly all AF days!
I would be up for a subsequent thread.

Nearlyadoctor · 28/10/2025 17:51

Me too !!

Trodincatsickagain · 28/10/2025 19:15

Evening All!

I think that’s a really good idea @HotTiredDog. I know this thread has definitely helped me to stay AF. Part of the reason for starting it was for the accountability to not only myself but anybody else that joined too and having posters to share the urges/ups and downs with has been so positive.
