How often do you get takeaways?

Two parents, two late teens. I try to limit to one each school holiday for a treat. Silly to have told kids as now they expect one then, plus the occasions that we can’t be bothered to even heat batch cooked meal from freezer. I also end up getting them McDs drive thru more often than I like as a late supper on the way home from wherever. Last year 10 take always and 8 McDs. How does this compare?

Once a month sometimes .. although this week it’s been twice as we’ve unavoidably been out late in the evening. I try not to order as it’s way too expensive. This week has cost us £50

thetooththewholetooth · 27/09/2025 11:04

At least once a week, sometimes twice. Eat out most weekends.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 27/09/2025 11:05

We used to end up getting a takeaway once a week but decided to cut back when we realised we were spending close to £250 a month on them 😬 We now get once every 2-3 weeks and it's cheaper as there's only one son left at home!

I love getting a takeaway and TBH am not even that bothered about the quality sometimes. It's just great having drinks and getting food delivered with no cooking needed 👍

Fish and chips if we are by the sea and there’s a good place - but we don’t live near the sea so maybe once a year. Otherwise we don’t. I like cooking and make curries, Chinese, Thai, pizza in a proper pizza oven etc so no reason to

larkstar · 27/09/2025 11:10

The last one I had was Sept 2001 - the day I moved in to my house and we just weren't up to cooking.

Scorpion84 · 27/09/2025 11:14

around twice a month , and always after payday 🤣

MidnightMeltdown · 27/09/2025 11:17

Probably once or twice a month. We do eat out every week though.

Toooldforlonghair · 27/09/2025 11:18

Once a week traditionally on Thursday - dates from when our 4 children were still at home. They had after school activities on that day which meant it was around 8pm when they were all home. They are adults now, with partners, scattered all over the country and abroad but if any of them are visiting the 'Thursday night Takeaaway ' is a must!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 27/09/2025 11:26

Maybe 5x a year for takeaway foods like pizza/curry/fish and chips.

Once per week for takeaway coffee/sandwich.

We eat out in (sit down) restaurants regularly 2-3 x per month.

We mostly cook at home but do use some convenience foods too.

Tastaturen · 27/09/2025 11:39

Rarely, when we're at home. It's sometimes unavoidable when staying in hotel but don't really want to eat out.

cygnusgenie · 27/09/2025 11:43

One a week. Might eat out about once a month or so too, sometime's more

Couple here, (DH and I,) late 50s. We have around 7 takeaways a year. Either Chinese, Indian, or something from the chippy. (Chicken kebab and chips usually, occasionally cod and chips with mushy peas... Or a big sausage with chips and curry sauce. ) Last takeaway was last weekend, (A Chinese one,) the one before that was late July. (Dominos Pizza. We have that maybe twice a year.)

A couple of families near us have on average, 3 takeaways a week. Both families of 5. (2 adults, 3 children between 8 and 17 in one family, and 2 adults and 3 children between 16 and 24 in the other - so basically 5 adults in the second family.) They basically CBA to cook/prepare dinner half the time, so just order a takeaway... Very often!

Both people in the couple work, but the woman works part time - like 20 hours a week, but I always worked when my DC were at home/growing up (from when they were 4 months old,) and I still managed to cook meals/prepare food. I don't understand why ANYone has 3 takeaways a week, or how they can possibly afford it. As I say, each family has a takeaway for 5 people!!!

p.s., yes I do think it should be the woman cooking, most of the time anyway, as she works less than half the hours the man does in both families.

Who can give this much of a fuck of how many takeaways someone eats. 😂

1-5 times a week here…supermarket variety is limited, expensive and often poor quality so prefer a takeaway which is varied and tastier 😂. Also I just can’t be fucked cooking half the time

TheRealGoose · 27/09/2025 11:50

Used to be weekly for us, but diets stopped that habit. Now in maintenance and we still don’t do takeaways, but we go out for dinner 3 times a month on average, never less, often more. If we are going to spend tne money I’d rather go out and enjoy it that way. Restaurants we rotate, Turkish, Indian,Greek and the local gastro pub.

Everythingthatmatters · 27/09/2025 11:51

We get one about once every 2 months. So no more than 6 per year but even that is a lot for us

JoeStall · 27/09/2025 11:52

Averages out at 10 times a year inc McDs, less if just including things like Chinese, Turkish etc. I just don't find it very good value and our youngest dcs prefer plainer food so it's just easier to cook at home.

This is deeply weird, why are you paying so much attention to how many takeaways your neighbours have, deciding who should cook, judging yourself superior and focusing on cost.

honesrly can you not see how weird and creepy that is?

Everythingthatmatters · 27/09/2025 11:53

I should add for us it’s literally about convenience on a day when things haven’t gone to plan. We don’t have lots of nice options and the ones we do have are so pricey

Borborygmus · 27/09/2025 11:54

Never.

HollyhockDays · 27/09/2025 11:54

Every Friday. I hate cooking so this gives me a break. They are getting SO expensive though!

Crunchymum · 27/09/2025 11:59

I don't cook on Saturday. So that can mean a take away or going out for dinner or grabbing a "dine in meal" from M&S. Take away probably every other week?

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 27/09/2025 12:05

It varies, I was burnout at the start of my two weeks leave so I had a lot of them. On average about twice a month I'd say.

Newmeagain · 27/09/2025 12:11

glittereyelash · 27/09/2025 09:52

Stopped getting takeaways two years ago. Don't miss them at all. I just found the quality had gone way down and they just upset my stomach. Love a fakeaway though!

Me too. I feel like the quality of takeaways has really declined (I think it’s the Deliveroo effect) and so the food is not a treat and the high salt and fat content always makes me feel a bit unwell.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 27/09/2025 12:12

I'd recommend living rurally, where takeaway drivers do not deliver, and in an area where your nearest town does not have a McDonald's! (The locals were fairly recently up in arms about getting a Greggs, as it was part of a chain, instead of an independent business...). Honestly, it promotes a (presumably) cheaper and healthier lifestyle! 😂

I think that I've had a maximum of 2-3 takeaways in the last year, mainly because I'm too tired and lazy to venture into town after a long day in work!

The odd treat won't kill you and your family, OP, and that's probably a lot less takeaways than most people would admit to having.

MyElatedUmberFinch · 27/09/2025 12:16

Family of 4 adults here, takeaway about every 2 weeks, eat out together once a month. DH and I eat out twice a week.

hby9628 · 27/09/2025 12:19

Once a week usually. Well DH & the kids do. I don’t always have one. We don’t eat out much or go out drinking so it’s our sat night thing we’ve always done.
