How often do you get takeaways?

Two parents, two late teens. I try to limit to one each school holiday for a treat. Silly to have told kids as now they expect one then, plus the occasions that we can’t be bothered to even heat batch cooked meal from freezer. I also end up getting them McDs drive thru more often than I like as a late supper on the way home from wherever. Last year 10 take always and 8 McDs. How does this compare?

Probably once a week, most frequently a chicken kebab and share a small pakora, sometimes a Chinese, very occasionally an Indian.

StrikeForever · 27/09/2025 12:29

Never. We prefer to eat home cooked food. We don’t have kids though. I imagine if we did, with all of the extra demands and time constraints, we may get them occasionally.

icebearforpresident · 27/09/2025 12:36

A Chinese or an Indian maybe 3 or 4 times a year. We tend to only get them when my husband or I have a week off work or in the week between Christmas and new year when the thought of actually having to cook is just too much 😆. If anyone is staying with us, not a common occurrence, we might get a chippy one evening but the Indian tends to be our first choice.

If we’re going to the cinema with the kids we usually get a McDonalds before or after, that happens a couple of times a year.

We aren’t totally skint but neither are we flush with cash so a takeaway for the 4 of us is definitely an occasional treat.

BadActingParsley · 27/09/2025 12:44

The takeaways where I live are all pretty awful so maybe twice a year, usually if there’s a load of family round and we can’t face cooking. If we had lovely Turkish or Thai or Japanese that had vegetables or salad (other than a token bit of iceberg and a tissuey tomato) I’d probably order it more often. We eat out about once a week and have a ready meal about once a week.

What has their being autistic got to do with it? Lots of kids/teens like to listen to music in the car and getting a McDonald's.

What a bitchy comment.

if you had any compassion you'd understand. Plenty of us do!

99victoria · 27/09/2025 13:22

Never
We used to get them when my parents visited us but they both died more than 10 years ago and I don't think we've had one since 😮

Shineonyoucrazy · 27/09/2025 13:46

@DoodleLugspending more than nutrition. I dont like fish and chips which is the cheapest - DP occasionally buys for him and kids if I’m out. We occasionally get kids Pizza delivered if we’re out. A Chinese or Indian is about £60 for all of us.

@larkstarrespect! I don’t even like them that much and I always get takeaway regret.

@Zovha ha I do have a strange fascination with what other people eat as well. I have a friend from work who is a bit like your neighbours - she developed gestational diabetes and got a bollocking from the midwife who said it was her fault because of takeaways. She absolutely hates the whole slog of buying, putting away and cooking food; she cooks a roast dinner double up every week and another meal eg spag Bol but takeaway 4x per week.

Every week

Fallstar · 27/09/2025 15:04

The last one was a couple of years ago. Don't really like them and we've both got more into healthy food as we've got older (and have more time to cook). I can't say the same for our adult DC, though!

Yeah but thsts different to watching how many takeaways your neighbours get, then counting it up. Deciding the women should cook for their whole family, irrelevant of what else they do in the home, deciding you’re superior to the women you’ve decided should be cooking each night as you did and wondering about how they can afford it etc. I mean that’s a whole other animal really.

JasperTheDoll · 27/09/2025 16:24

Once a week. I refuse to cook on Saturdays. We are all currently looking through the menu for the Indian choosing what we want.

Gestational diabetes is completely unrelated to diet. It is literally caused by pregnancy and goes away afterwards. It is managed by diet (and sometimes medication) but it is not caused by diet. It is not type 2 diabetes. I call bullshit that any midwife said otherwise.

Poor management of gestational diabetes because of diet is something a midwife would comment on but they would not say it is the cause.

family of 6 here we have a takeaway most days. I very rarely cook unless I’m chucking something in the air fryer for the kids after school. And it’s not just dinner either it can be breakfast and lunch too.

😂🤣🤣🤣🤣😂

ainsleysanob · 27/09/2025 18:05

Once a week, every Friday.

havingoneofthosedays · 27/09/2025 18:09

What's a takeaway 🧐

Nourishinghandcream · 27/09/2025 18:20

Might buy chips once every couple of months (veggie so no fish, sausages, pies etc) but that is it.
We used to order from our favourite Indian restaurant every couple of weeks but have not done that for about 20yrs.

Every time it crosses our mind to order something, we decide to cook instead!

TiredofLDN · 27/09/2025 18:23

Between once a week and once a month, depending on how stressed I am. Occasionally it could be twice a week if I’m really struggling with work/ life balance (I’m a single parent, one of those jobs that sometimes just takes over at crunch time, and a firm believer in letting carrot and cucumber sticks do some heavy lifting.)

I resent it though, because it’s generally because I’m extremely time-poor, and I think the quality and cost of most takeaways these days is shit on both counts.

Wethers121 · 27/09/2025 18:24

We used to have a takeaway each weekend but don’t now as cutting back so maybe once a month now. We do take the kids to McDonald’s for happy meals after swimming lessons each week but not expensive as they have happy meals and I don’t get a meal

EveryDayisFriday · 27/09/2025 18:26

Not often, every 3-4 months.

pinkbackground · 27/09/2025 18:26

Until around a month ago we got one on birthdays and Christmas as we’re we’re on a strict budget. We’ve recently paid off our debts and mortgage so are having one every 2-3 weeks.

OswaldCobblepot · 27/09/2025 18:35

Never, there are no takeaways where I live. 64 miles round trip to the nearest Chinese.

Greenwriter76 · 27/09/2025 18:41

We used to get a takeaway a week, sometimes 2. Our faves were Chinese or chips & we’re lucky as we have quite a few good ones in our small town.
Nowadays we tend to have a meal out most but not all weekends (eg. a big breakfast, a McDs or a carvery) and takeaway every few months maybe.
if you’re getting drive-thru anything, that’s a takeaway.

forgotmyusername1 · 27/09/2025 18:47

4x a year (4 person household)
The birthday person chooses it.
