How often do you get takeaways?

Two parents, two late teens. I try to limit to one each school holiday for a treat. Silly to have told kids as now they expect one then, plus the occasions that we can’t be bothered to even heat batch cooked meal from freezer. I also end up getting them McDs drive thru more often than I like as a late supper on the way home from wherever. Last year 10 take always and 8 McDs. How does this compare?

Maybe twice a year? I think they are shite and I can cook something much nicer myself, but dc think they are exciting, so it’s probably twice a year.

RaininSummer · 27/09/2025 10:23

About once every twenty years it seems. Not a fan.

Mischance · 27/09/2025 10:25

Never ... they are not willing to drive to the middle of nowhere!

Anotherename · 27/09/2025 10:27

Roughly once a week plus husband and I will eat out once a week.

I have to say though since I have been on Mounjaro we get them a lot less (also a lot cheaper, as if we go to Mac’s I will get a wrap of the day , and my Chinese order is now a portion of noodles that I often share 😆)

I think we could actually do with cutting down a bit and making more from scratch. I only work 30 ish hours so I do have slightly more time

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 27/09/2025 10:28

I hate to admit it but about twice a week. I'm a working single mum of 1 teen. I make it healthier takeaway though, a fresh Mexican, curry or stir fry etc.

Couple here, (DH and I,) late 50s. We have around 7 takeaways a year. Either Chinese, Indian, or something from the chippy. (Chicken kebab and chips usually, occasionally cod and chips with mushy peas... Or a big sausage with chips and curry sauce. ) Last takeaway was last weekend, (A Chinese one,) the one before that was late July. (Dominos Pizza. We have that maybe twice a year.)

A couple of families near us have on average, 3 takeaways a week. Both families of 5. (2 adults, 3 children between 8 and 17 in one family, and 2 adults and 3 children between 16 and 24 in the other - so basically 5 adults in the second family.) They basically CBA to cook/prepare dinner half the time, so just order a takeaway... Very often!

Both people in the couple work, but the woman works part time - like 20 hours a week, but I always worked when my DC were at home/growing up (from when they were 4 months old,) and I still managed to cook meals/prepare food. I don't understand why ANYone has 3 takeaways a week, or how they can possibly afford it. As I say, each family has a takeaway for 5 people!!!

p.s., yes I do think it should be the woman cooking, most of the time anyway, as she works less than half the hours the man does in both families.

You should try a hobby other than curtain twitching.

What has their being autistic got to do with it? Lots of kids/teens like to listen to music in the car and getting a McDonald's.

My older 2 children used to like to eat out in McDonalds or other places, whereas the younger girls aren't able to as they get too overwhelmed. So they prefer to get take away and eat in the car. Otherwise we would probably never get take away.

JBJ · 27/09/2025 10:32

About once a month usually.

Lanva · 27/09/2025 10:34

Loads! Eat out loads too. Got used to it living in the US.

MightyGoldBear · 27/09/2025 10:37

I've got younger than teens so I appreciate with teens food can be a good spending time together option. Mine aren't that fussed so maybe 5 times a year. Tends to be on the way to holiday if we are tight on time etc

My husband and I get a takeaway more often once every two months sometimes once a month depends how tired we are and what life is like. Sometimes a take away Is just nice to look forward to. We mostly get Turkish food so it's still healthy ish.

FilterBubble · 27/09/2025 10:38

A decade back once a week, these days zero times a year.

ImFineItsAllFine · 27/09/2025 10:42

DH and I have one takeaway a fortnight (used to be once a week pre-DC). The DC are 5 and 7 and almost never have fast food - mostly because they are so fussy it's generally a waste of money. We don't tend to eat out in restaurants at all, for various reasons.

Lots of DCs classmates have MacDonalds every Friday though so there's a really wide spectrum of what's 'normal' for different families.

childofthe607080s · 27/09/2025 10:45

less now - One at Christmas usually,
havent Had one so far this year

when kids around - Christmas, birthdays, and a McDonald on the summer shopping trip. Would always be able to rustle up pasta and cheese or beans on toast in preference to grabbing on the road

MiddleAgedDread · 27/09/2025 10:49

A chippy maybe twice a year after having been out all day or just come home from holiday type occasion. Think I’ve had one once this year.

Itbeginswith · 27/09/2025 10:52

About 3 or 4 times a year. Always a Chinese on New Year’s Eve.

SafeSex · 27/09/2025 10:55

fourelementary · 27/09/2025 09:24

So how often is that? You said one per holiday (4 a year? ) but mcds often… and takeaways when you don’t fancy cooking… so how many a year and is mcds takeaway?

If mcds is takeaway (which I don’t think it is) then my teens have 3 times a month roughly. I’d like Chinese or Indian maybe 2/3 per year. Chippy maybe 4/5 times a year.

From the OP: "Last year 10 take always and 8 McDs."

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 27/09/2025 10:55

Roughly every 6 weeks? Having one tonight and excited! Unsure what time the negotiations will start between the 4 key stakeholders to decide what it is going to be.

Om83 · 27/09/2025 10:57

Around a 2-3 years ago we were getting to the point of having ‘pizza Fridays’ so takeaway pizza every Friday, or would swap it out for a KFC. I feel like it would have been around £20/25 for a family deal to feed the 4 of us.

we generally have no takeaways now for two reasons - my daughter was diagnosed with coeliac disease nearly 2 years ago, so vary rare for any gluten free offering to be truly safe or even available from a takeaway - we don’t like eating her previous favourite treats in front of her when she can’t have them, and the occasional times we have and cooked her a GF pizza at home, have been really disappointed in the pizzas, less toppings, more greasy than I remember, all for the joy of spending over £40 on just 3 of us…

will still eat out at McDonald’s or Nando’s etc when out and about a few times a year as don’t have them live (plus everyone always gets stupidly excited at the motorway services for opportunity for junk food as it is so rare now!!) but our occasional ‘treat’ is now taking my young teens into M&S to pick out something yummy for dinner.

I think my daughter’s diagnosis has made us all much healthier and saved some money… every cloud and all that!

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 27/09/2025 10:59

I do want to add that my DC are older and have them more frequently with their friends and go to McDs etc under their own steam. So I am speaking for DH and me.

EchoedSilence · 27/09/2025 11:00

Once a week.

AliceMaforethought · 27/09/2025 11:00

Once a week, any more would be unhealthy. I try to cook from scratch as much as I can.

Fatmumslim01 · 27/09/2025 11:00

It used to be a Chinese every weekend but since Ive been on mounjaro it's probably once every 6 - 8 weeks or so and we actually look forward to it alot more now and enjoy it alot more.

PersistentRain · 27/09/2025 11:01

Hardly ever. Used to get a Friday curry for years, they iust seem crap now.

EchoedSilence · 27/09/2025 11:02

We also eat out at least once a fortnight at the local pub.

Lara1978o · 27/09/2025 11:02

I don’t know why you aren’t counting McDonald’s in that because I would definitely class it as a takeaway. Or do you mean home delivery?

I would say 6 times a year at an absolute max. We usually get Indian or Chinese. I absolutely hate the ‘fast food’ style takeaways such as Maccies, kfc etc and it always feels like a waste of a takeaway.

Thinking about it now I think we’ve had 3 so far this year. One on the day we moved into our house, one on DH’s birthday and one the day after our engagement party when we were hungover.

We go on holiday in a few weeks so will have one when we come back and then probably one or two over the Xmas period but that’s it.

We used to eat them at least once a week, sometimes even twice. I have no idea how we could afford it if I’m being honest.
