How often do you get takeaways?

Two parents, two late teens. I try to limit to one each school holiday for a treat. Silly to have told kids as now they expect one then, plus the occasions that we can’t be bothered to even heat batch cooked meal from freezer. I also end up getting them McDs drive thru more often than I like as a late supper on the way home from wherever. Last year 10 take always and 8 McDs. How does this compare?

We don't have any chain takeaways here so about once a month

MissSmith80 · 27/09/2025 10:04

Once a month and that’s if you include takeaway from our local Italian restaurant - we’d tend to have a pasta dish and some garlic bread.
Excluding that, every other month and would usually be Indian, Chinese or Dominoes on a rotation. We never have McD, KFC etc.

Badlands1 · 27/09/2025 10:04

Once every 6 weeks or so but we do eat out about once a week

Jackooo · 27/09/2025 10:05

Once a week

Pinkladyapplepie · 27/09/2025 10:05

Only on birthdays so maybe 3 times a year, depending on if adult kids come for birthday. I have lunch with friend once a month. That kids to lunch if they are a bit down.

ResusciAnnie · 27/09/2025 10:05

At least once a week. At least 5x a week between me & DH if you’re counting lunches.

Last night had Indian. Often have Nando’s (chicken and veg and leave half the chicken for lunch) or a Chipotle salad (half for dinner, half for lunch).

(as you can see, we got into a Deliveroo habit during our year-long build, but also as you can see, it’s not always terrible. I just cannot be assed to cook a lot during the week so it’s jacket potato, nothing, or takeaway.
Our bedtime routine with the kids spans 6pm - 8pm due to range of ages.
Kids eat at 5:30 which is too early for me and DH (I finish work 2 night a week at 8:30, DH often still working at 5:30), and starting to cook at 8pm is so late!! Obviously if we’re both home one can do bedtimes and one can cook but that’s rare).

About twice per year and usually disappointed so we don’t really bother anymore. Cost vs taste isn’t worth it.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 27/09/2025 10:06

Never.

pinotnow · 27/09/2025 10:06

Takeaways very rare here -always on NYE and maybe one or two others. This year ds2 requested them for his birthday meal and results day meal - so 3 in total. Maccys - more often. At least once in every school holiday at some point and maybe a couple of others as well - probably 10-15 across the year.

They have a lot more of both, especially takeaways, at their dad's unfortunately, even though he is too low paid to pay CMS...

morbidd · 27/09/2025 10:07

I used to have them often, however I just feel the quality has gone down hill and the price has soared. Recently would find myself feeling quite dissatisfied after eating them.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 27/09/2025 10:07

Used to be once a week - we had an amazing Chinese and curry who delivered to us but the quality has just got worse and worse and I just don’t like it anymore.

finding the same with going out, there ate
no independents, all chains, ordering on an app, full of uber drivers

Berlinlover · 27/09/2025 10:08

Never.

susiedaisy1912 · 27/09/2025 10:08

Proper takeaways is once a month.a quick sandwich in Costa or similar once a week.

WhiteNoiseBlur · 27/09/2025 10:08

Whenever we fancy! Usually once a week. No pearl clutching over takeaways in our house

SparklyStrictly25 · 27/09/2025 10:09

Once or twice a year.

mansprichtdeutsch · 27/09/2025 10:10

Once or twice a year

Panola · 27/09/2025 10:12

About once a month but once a week in lock down as something to look forward to

Zov · 27/09/2025 10:13

Couple here, (DH and I,) late 50s. We have around 7 takeaways a year. Either Chinese, Indian, or something from the chippy. (Chicken kebab and chips usually, occasionally cod and chips with mushy peas... Or a big sausage with chips and curry sauce. ) Last takeaway was last weekend, (A Chinese one,) the one before that was late July. (Dominos Pizza. We have that maybe twice a year.)

A couple of families near us have on average, 3 takeaways a week. Both families of 5. (2 adults, 3 children between 8 and 17 in one family, and 2 adults and 3 children between 16 and 24 in the other - so basically 5 adults in the second family.) They basically CBA to cook/prepare dinner half the time, so just order a takeaway... Very often!

Both people in the couple work, but the woman works part time - like 20 hours a week, but I always worked when my DC were at home/growing up (from when they were 4 months old,) and I still managed to cook meals/prepare food. I don't understand why ANYone has 3 takeaways a week, or how they can possibly afford it. As I say, each family has a takeaway for 5 people!!!

p.s., yes I do think it should be the woman cooking, most of the time anyway, as she works less than half the hours the man does in both families.

Advocodo · 27/09/2025 10:16

Last take away was November 2021! I expect the next one will be a few years too.

overstimulatedhermit · 27/09/2025 10:16

family of 6 here we have a takeaway most days. I very rarely cook unless I’m chucking something in the air fryer for the kids after school. And it’s not just dinner either it can be breakfast and lunch too.

Zempy · 27/09/2025 10:16

Once a year maybe.

cinquanta · 27/09/2025 10:16

Once in a blue moon.

Not eaten a MacDonalds meal since Christmas 2010.

Rainydayinlondon · 27/09/2025 10:16

Used to be once or twice a week but trying to reduce to once a fortnight.

Unfortunately (!) the Chinese, Indian and fish and chips restaurants near us are EXCELLENT, so very hard to resist.

FancyCatSlave · 27/09/2025 10:17

2-3 times a month. There’s no deliveries here. We go to the chip shop about once a fortnight but can be weekly sometimes and then not for a while. I love a Chinese but it’s a faff to get so only a few a year.

I get McDonalds breakfast for me once a week when passing and DD has a Happy Meal 1-2 times a month usually when we go to town (we live rurally).

DoodleLug · 27/09/2025 10:17

We get an Indian takeaway about twice a month, usually lots of side dishes plus a whole tandoori chicken and I couldn't be bothered making that myself.

DC go for a McD with GPs about once a month.

Are you thinking about nutrition or spending in asking this? Or measuring laziness in who can't be bothered to cook?

We eat out at a carvery type pub about once a week and DC often get burgers which probably aren't significantly better than a takeaway nutrition wise and are more expensive, and of course its easier than cooking.
