A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

They more than gave taxing education a second thought- they relished it! The glee was unseemly.

It was all they had. Spiteful lot they are. People are realising state education is made worse by Labour’s policies.

Interesting rest is politics today - Campbell saying that it’s not worth pretending chats about replacing Starmer aren’t happening. Campbell sounds like he agrees somewhat with the line that Mandelson is understandably upset as he was upfront about the Epstein relationship…

I know how you feel Keir! Yet here you are, clinging on.

😂😂 Starmer is such an empty vessel!!

I can only imagine he’s a prime example of Peter’s Principle.

So Campbell also knows that Starmer is lying if he's admitting that Mandy didn't hide anything?

He might not go that far but it’s clear he accepts the criticism! I reckon Starmer’s days may be numbered…

Yes, quite apt. But, of course he'll cling on. They are shameless.

I’m glad to see the news about the AI investment as we really need to get the economy going for all our sakes.

However, given the promised investment from the pharmaceutical industry that has now been scrapped/“paused” I will believe it when I see it.

I’m also concerned about the terms on which this has been agreed. If we are dependent on the benevolence of whichever US administration is in charge at the time then we could find ourselves up the proverbial creek. We’ve been screwed over royally by US defence contractors with their special software which only they can update (costing us £millions extra) and I don’t doubt that the tech firms will be adding in special clauses all over the place.

CaveMum · 17/09/2025 09:59

Thanks also for the supportive comments on the potential gambling tax. I completely agree that betting companies should pay their way but serious thought has to be given to how that is implemented and the knock on effects of getting it wrong.

Yes definitely agree with that but unfortunately Labour seem incapable of doing impact assessments

This is also, sadly, true.

We’re hoping that Lady Starmer may be having words in his ear, she’s a known racing fan. Failing that the King and Queen may have a chance to put him right over pudding this week!

Sorry to hear Labour’s incompetence is coming round. They haven’t many supporters left, bar a few on mn still.

Rivalled · 17/09/2025 10:27

@CaveMum I have exactly the same concerns on the AI investment - ok we get some jobs but all the power resides stateside, and meanwhile they’ll sell their AI tools here and uk jobs in other sectors will get cut due to these AI efficiencies.

it looks like once again it’s a defeatist strategy of ‘we’ve lost the tech race, let’s hang onto their coattails as we can’t compete with US AI’.

i’m mulling over whether that really is the best we could do in this space and that’s the reality that we’re tied to the US vs China fight for AI supremacy. This could be a deal that hastens mass AI related job loss.

and as for the gambling taxes - yet another poorly thought put tax grab against a group Labour think is ‘deserving’ - I don’t accept the premise that they need to make the tax burden more complex at all when fundamental reforms and simplifications are needed to allow growth.

Rivalled · 17/09/2025 10:28

We’re now trying to rebuild defence tech capability - wouldn’t a deal with Germany etc have made more sense on AI etc? The euro block.

that’s the thing, Europe is always on catch up.

EasternStandard · 17/09/2025 10:31

This is a bit off topic but I saw Denmark had given people the right to copyright re use of AI, sounded useful

Denmark has proposed a revolutionary amendment to its copyright law that would give individuals "copyright-like" rights over their own face, voice, and body

Rivalled · 17/09/2025 10:33

That’s good - doesn’t it need to go further though, ideally we’d extend this to online searches, and change laws so workplaces can’t sack you for personal Facebook posts. As well as the huge mess of copyright for creatives.

it'll keep lawyers busy for twenty years!

Rivalled · 17/09/2025 10:34

It’s high time we had proper free speech laws updated for the digital age.

CaveMum · 17/09/2025 10:35

At the risk of plugging TRIP again (😜) the Leading interview this week is with Sir Tim Berners-Lee - fascinating man, I didn’t know his parents knew Alan Turing.

He talks about the U.K. needing to work with Europe to create our own tech/AI centres and that it should not be left to the US and China to dominate the landscape.

At the risk of sounding like a flag-waving nut job, it’s a crying shame that we’ve lost so much tech innovation from this country over the decades. Can you imagine how different things would be right now if the post-war governments hadn’t given the US all the work that had been done at Bletchley and the like in computing?!

I swapped my SUV for a 10 yr old Kia Venga. Live rurally with horses etc and got sick of spending ££ on new suspension etc for SUV.
My Venga is amazing. Costs £300 per year to insure, £40 road tax per year. Is a diesel and 1 tank lasts me 4 weeks.
My car is now 14 years old, going strong and gets up and down rutted roads no problem. I have winter tyres + chains on in snow and ice.

Only challenge is that it only fits 2 x bags of shavings in at a time

Edited

Big fan of Kias. I once managed to fit three bamboos, two dogs and two children into my Kia picanto.

I had a little huddle standing around me in B&Q wondering how it was going to work. It did. [blows on fingers. pats self on back].

Rivalled · 17/09/2025 10:46

100 percent agree @CaveMum - it’s a strategic disaster - we’ve hit it in defence already, we will hit it in AI. I shall check it out!

the Hunt leading ones were good too…they’ve been a bit more interesting recently TRIP as Campbell is finally acknowledging some do the messes Labour have made.

Rivalled · 17/09/2025 10:47

Our academic scientists are some of the very best and god knows how when they’ve had years of being underfunded.
