Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

TV shops with all the TVs in the window playing the same channel.
Weighing scales in the shopping centre
Avon sellers dropping off the mini catalogue. I used to love the smelly pages!

Used to buy a pot of dried powder/coating that you shook over raw chicken in a bowl and then stirred it to cover the chicken pieces before frying in a pan, with a little oil to stop it sticking. The one I recall was a Chinese-style flavour and my DC loved it so much. It just disappeared one day and no-one outside my family/close friends whose DC often stayed for tea, can remember it. I can’t even recall the brand now either.

Has anyone mentioned the Argos catalogue yet? And other toy stores catalogues that my children used to love to go through and circle what they wanted for Christmas?

I knew the man who owned the company that produced the Argos catalogue, as well as many others.
Can't help wondering what has happened to him & his company in this digital age ?

I once worked for Schwartz/McCormicks , & they were experimenting with this when I left. Was it them ?

SossijWoll · 21/09/2025 21:31

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends ooh yes - it might have been! It was delicious so it’s a shame it disappeared.

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 21:58

@StoorieHoose it is like a uniform

CalzoneOnLegs · 21/09/2025 21:59

Our city centre had a Virgin megastore where you could put on a set of headphones and listen to newly-released albums before deciding whether to purchase the CD.

@SossijWoll you can certainly get spicy or paprika-based chicken seasoning powder still from various brands — check out the Just Spices seasoning range (but I haven’t seen a Chinese-style flavour).

Car stereos where you popped the front off and put in a case which you took with you to stop it getting nicked. Mine used to beep when I turned the engine off to remind me to do it and I can still hear the sound in my head now

big steering locks on cars and having to have about three different keys for my car as various locks would need to be changed when someone tried to break in- I think for one car I had three- one for the drivers door, one for the boot and the original one for the engine

kays catalogue

watching Euro trash on Friday nights followed by The Word

Recognising the sound of your own dial up connection tone

Vidal Sassoon shampoo- the advert was something like ‘like you’ve just stepped out of a salon’

That shampoo advert was for Salon Selectives not Vidal Sassoon 😀 I remember it really well!

Omg yes @TeaBiscuitsNaptime . One of my younger colleagues complained recently in a team meeting that it was rude to just ring people without prior notice now. Ffs.

I'm 40 ish and I have kind of become like this! I hate it when my phone rings and if it's someone from work I do get annoyed, like why couldn't you have pinged me on Teams first!
