Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

Young girls (teens/20's) looking like individuals rather than identical make-up, fillers, nose job clones of each other

Slim-Fast

Amazing 'can't put down' books. I really struggle to find decent fiction now as it all seems fantasy/fairy or quickly churned out crap. I tend to pick up books originally published 20+ years ago that I didnt get round to reading the first time.

Platform ankle boots😀, as a shorty, I loved them.

Sweater Shop sweaters. So comfy and cosy ☹️.

The Body Shop before they went downhill.

I've just been reading one of my old ones 👍🏻

I was blaming my peri brain though!

Short hair on young women...that's another one. The only young women I see with short hair these days all identfy as non binary.

Was just going to say. . Fit flop have platform ankle boots in!

Mint wispas
M&S used to do a really good roast vegetable sandwich with balsamic dressing on sundried tomato bread. 17 year old me thought it was the most sophisticated thing ever.

That sandwich was amazing! M&S also did a chicken and grape one that was lovely.

Showdogworkingdog · 16/09/2025 23:08

Applause chocolate bars. Bloody loved them.
m&s sherbet fruit boiled sweets. I crunched through a whole bag during every final exam. They used to have a big thick wedge of sherbet in the middle then they replaced them with an inferior version with a tiny sliver of sherbet. Just shit.
phone cards.
travellers cheques.

Yes 90s interior design trends! Everything was terracotta at one point. And there was that Feng Shui craze.

Department stores. I could spend the whole day in Debenhams, including getting my breakfast and a scone 5 hours later. Got all my clothes and Christmas presents. RIP big D.

I fancy doing this! Could still do it in John Lewis.

pontivex · 16/09/2025 23:53

Packets of peanuts behind the bar in the pub on a board that revealed a woman with her boobs out as they got sold.

Yes but the cars rusted to bits within 6 months and you had to use up a whole can of WD-40 to get them started

I think Tony Blair was one of the architects of the change out of “normality”, although it wasn’t immediately obvious. Under him we saw the rise of the nanny state, and health and safety being more important than anything else. He said “I want every household to have the internet” - he wasn’t being altruistic. He also normalised politicians being slick and “call me Tony, I’m middle class like you”, while robbing everyone blind.

It was also at the end of the 90s there was always some annual disaster round the corner, usually with some health and safety moral, and with the rise of online news, the messages would be rammed down our throats:
1999: don’t burn your eyes out looking at the eclipse, and don’t get caught up in the millions flocking to see it. (Remember “flocking” in 2020?)
2000: millennium bug.
2001: 9/11, foot and mouth, mobile phones are frying your brain.
2002: weapons of mass destruction.
etc.

I prefer to avoid irreversible vision loss from watching an eclipse.

Never understand it when people complain about health and safety advice.

That eclipse was great! I had the day off work even though we were really busy at the time. Boss could have said no.

I live rurally, we still get the mobile library 🙂
Makes me smile when I see it as I also grew up rurally and this used to be one of my highlights in childhood.

Floppy disks - DC2 found one at the back of a drawer a few years ago and asked me what it was!

Paper maps and precise advance arrangements for where and when to meet - I was explaining to wide-eyed DC1 who is 23 tbe other day how we just had to carry an A to Z (map book) in London and how we would have to make very precise meet up arrangements. I used to meet my friends outside the Swiss Centre in London (long since demolished). If somebody didn't turn up at the agreed time, we'd just have the wait and hope.

FortuneFaded · 17/09/2025 01:59

Umbrellas being used by people under 40. Never see anyone under 40 using an umbrella near here. They just put a hood up or get wet.

Those little plastic hair covers for when it rains. Wouldn’t mind one of those now as, I also don’t bother with umbrellas. They just turn inside out when it is windy.

madamovaries · 17/09/2025 02:01

White dog poo.

White dog poo.

Someone was talking about that the other day. I thought, naively, that white dog poo came from white or cream dogs, and brown was from brown or black dogs! They thought that was hilarious, but then also said they would run up and kick white dog poo, and it would disintegrate. I don’t remember that happening.

The 90s were a sweet spot between Cold War mutual destruction fear and 9/11 terrorism fear.

I miss Spiras, Smash Hits magazine, and Sara Lee double chocolate gateau.
