Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

It’s funny how things just go out of fashion almost overnight. We had several bowls of pot pouri in the house and wallpaper borders! Not to mention fluffy mats that went round the bottom of the sink and toilet - yuk! 🤢

Doggymummar · 17/09/2025 20:15

Have two slips which I wear under sweater dresses as they are wooI and could be itchy. The slips are cotton which is nicer next to my skin.

Moonlightdust · 17/09/2025 20:16

Oh and Avon books with all the freebie sample perfumes which I loved stealing as a kid!

And dado rails.

Absolutely not, my lilac and turquoise one was the height of sophistication!

I took had a lilac and turquoise shell suit. I remember there being a real fear about spontaneous combustion in the 90s, my brother and I were terrified by a photo of a pair of shoes left behind. Quite why I worse a shell suit when I was scare of combusting, I don’t know. Dangerous times!

And dado rails.

Dado rails aren't a fashion item though, they were an accepted style in older Victorian/Edwardian houses and part of their charm. They are only an issue if they are added like artificial beams.

I remember being shown around a house & the young estate agent talked about the dildo rails.

Young couples draped around each other, hands in jeans pockets as they walk or kissing on a wall

Hysterical!

TragicMuse · 18/09/2025 21:30

High street banks.
NHS dentists - I’m not being deliberately cynical, we don’t have a single one taking on NHS adult patients in my whole county.
Post offices.

ooherrmissus14 · 18/09/2025 22:45

Car stereos where you popped the front off and put in a case which you took with you to stop it getting nicked. Mine used to beep when I turned the engine off to remind me to do it and I can still hear the sound in my head now

big steering locks on cars and having to have about three different keys for my car as various locks would need to be changed when someone tried to break in- I think for one car I had three- one for the drivers door, one for the boot and the original one for the engine

kays catalogue

watching Euro trash on Friday nights followed by The Word

Recognising the sound of your own dial up connection tone

Vidal Sassoon shampoo- the advert was something like ‘like you’ve just stepped out of a salon’

blobby10 · 19/09/2025 09:55

Has anyone mentioned the Argos catalogue yet? And other toy stores catalogues that my children used to love to go through and circle what they wanted for Christmas?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 19/09/2025 10:11

Lifting the paper flaps and smelling perfume in my mother's magazines

Fashion shows

Being bored when waiting for someone or public transport

Everyone in school talking about a TV show that we all watched the night before

The sense of freedom in a nightclub, knowing no one could record you dancing. Of course it wasn't appreciated until it was lost.

@ooherrmissus14 i remember the big steering locks. There was slogan “buy me and stop one”. And yes, the car stereos that you took with you were an inconvenience, because it victim blaming if it got stolen. “You should have taken it with you.” Like the keyless keys that now need Faraday pouches: a “revolutionary” device which makes things worse, not better.

@Dontlletmedownbruce i know what you mean about bored waiting for public transport, with smartphones, but I still get very bored waiting. My grandfather had a funny story about this: he and his wife sat miserably waiting for a delayed train, and somebody secretly drew them looking glum, and gave them the picture! He proudly showed it to us.

CalzoneOnLegs · 19/09/2025 20:53

They are called ‘Krooklok’ and you can still get them, I suppose for classic cars

@CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution well knock me down with a feather Clever Trevor !

At railway stations, the mechanical departure boards with the moving flaps: they were hypnotic, made a lovely sound, and I think much better than the rubbish ones there are in big stations now. In those days, you could just glance at them, and all the information you needed would be there. Now, you have to wait for them to display the right page "page 1 of 2", or to scroll slowly through the names of stations, as well as through meaningless drivel about not leaving luggage unattended, etc. In my local station, the narrow underpass is often crowded by people waiting for the right page to appear.

This makes me really miss the 90s.

Making a mix tape for a friend
Sending postcards & letters
Happy people
Less pressure on students to pass exams
Blockbuster
Phone boxes & home phone
Teen magazines
Different styles - not all teens wanting to copy an influencer
People just having fun & not filming it or continually taking photos

Ya, it's one thing thats gone, spending hours hanging around chatting or thinking about things. Discussing different possibilities for the future, horoscopes and their matches and spending nearly the whole day getting ready for sat night out, going shopping in town beforehand etc. Now if go chatting for an hour or two I feel like I need to keep moving!

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 21/09/2025 13:13

Calling over to friends houses whenever you like and without notice. No one minded. They did the same to you. If you were in, you were in. No one minded altering their plans at a moments notice. In fact there was a good chance that there was another friend there and that they had done the same. And if they were going somewhere they would just tell you, didn't bother anyone. There was much less anxiety about wasted time.

Mumteedum · 21/09/2025 13:14

Omg yes @TeaBiscuitsNaptime . One of my younger colleagues complained recently in a team meeting that it was rude to just ring people without prior notice now. Ffs.

To ring people? Oh lord 🤦‍♀️Young people these days 😅. ya, come to think of it, I don't spend as long chatting on the phone either, it's nearly all shorter calls
