Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

A lot more music magazines with free CDs in them. I first listened to quite a few bands that way.

Aw. Loved looking through Freemans, Index and La Redoute catalogues after school.

We had the mobile library, fun!

My grandma had the fish man once a week, came round and you bought fish out the back of his van.

TabbyM · 16/09/2025 14:32

@Latenightreader yes Mint Wispas! They disappeared around 2005 when I started working in town. The Gold ones came back but never mint ones....

ResusciAnnie · 16/09/2025 14:34

Toys in cereal boxes. Why the hell did that stop 😒 yeah yeah, encouraging junk food…. Well my kids eat cereal anyway and I’d love for them to experience the toy in box!! We also got CD ROMs with really good video games on, and sent away for some Disney cereal bowls from vouchers from cereal boxes. So much more fun than nowadays!

Those little tiny red bugs (spiders?) on bricks. Where have they all gone?!

Dancing sunflowers is a good one.

I was only asking my mum the other day whatever happened to red ants?! They used to be everywhere

White dog shit

I was waiting for someone to say that 😅

Mint wispas
M&S used to do a really good roast vegetable sandwich with balsamic dressing on sundried tomato bread. 17 year old me thought it was the most sophisticated thing ever.

I still mourn that M&S sandwich. Nothing else has quite delivered.

ResusciAnnie · 16/09/2025 14:37

Also Mizz & Shout & Girl Talk magazines. Do they even do magazines for tweens and teens anymore? Jackie etc is more my mum’s generation (b. 1960), no way were we reading that in the 2000s!

Gingerkittykat · 16/09/2025 14:38

The Next Directory, I used to spend hours reading through it.

The Argos catalogue.

IsThisLifeNow · 16/09/2025 14:40

mobile libraries are definitely still a thing, we get one weekly to out village!

Firebird83 · 16/09/2025 14:40

I loved Shout magazine!

I remember when Channel 5 was launched. Also PS1 games like Frogger and Crash Bandicoot. Our primary school caretaker used to sell pirated games

Pogs and tamacochis
Tammy girl, etam, mark one, bay trading and pilot for clothes!

LaundryFairy · 16/09/2025 14:43

Magic Eye posters and books

They're still there. You've just gotten older so a.) you're less inquisitive about the bug life of the average house brick, and b.) your eyesight has likely gone to shit. (Mine has at least)

Firebird83 · 16/09/2025 14:46

Those Atomic Fireballs, the hot cinnamon type sweets. They were really popular at school.

Department stores. I could spend the whole day in Debenhams, including getting my breakfast and a scone 5 hours later. Got all my clothes and Christmas presents. RIP big D.

They all live at my house now. Can't get rid of the bitey fuckers.

What don't I see anymore?
Shops on the high street. Love the internet but really miss looking round shops too.

Panda pops
Decent music
People not cancelling one another because they have opposing points of view.
Fuse bars.

NetballHoop · 16/09/2025 14:51

Ceefax/Teletext

Music centres - great big things with radio, casette and record player all in one.

House of Frasier was legendary near me for the fact that once you were in you could never leave. The exits just magically vanished. It was like being in fecking Narnia.

Firebird83 · 16/09/2025 14:52

I used to buy a fizzy bright blue panda pop at break time every day at school 😅

Me too!
Christ alone knows what was in it but my god it was good.
Tuck shops for break time is another thing you never see anymore. Today's
poor kids don't know what their being deprived of!

ResusciAnnie · 16/09/2025 14:57

Also tuck shops at school. I was just telling DS the other day how at break time in secondary there’d be a table set up in the hall selling Wham bars, Freddos, etc for mere pence. My friend used to get 5 Whams at a time and eat them all. If we could get to the table through the swarm of kids around it. Highly doubt there’s such a thing at school nowadays!! I feel old 😄

Also we’d buy loads of mini potato waffles and hash browns from the canteen at break but I think that’s more likely to be around still.

Cross post 😄

Firebird83 · 16/09/2025 14:59

Yes! My own kids are only allowed water and fruit at school 😆
