Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

Oh god, do you remember the couples bedroom that their next door neighbours and Laurence Llewellyn Bowen made over and the lady was devastated because she said it looked like a brothel?(she wasn't wrong IIRC). All I remember is there being loads of zebra print involved.

I'm fairly sure some of the zebra print was underwear that he had framed and put on the wall.

@sashh that sounds typical batshit LLB I do love him though, he has an absolutely beautiful home, Yorkshire auction house celebrity edition went there and he donated lots of items to charity including a Kate Malone glazed pumpkin which was really nice.

Even more batshit, a friend of mine said if he got a pet rabbit it would be called Lawrence Llewelyn Bunny which I think is a great bunny name.

Bladderpool · 17/09/2025 10:59

My dd is I love with him, he’s old enough to be her dad but she thinks he’s fantastic. We got her a cardboard cutout of him for her flat warming.

CalzoneOnLegs · 17/09/2025 11:02

@sashh it is the best bunny name, never to be bettered. ❤️

Yes that's it. I had a feeling underwear was involved somewhere but couldn't remember exactly how.

@Bladderpool I've seen the wife pop up on telly a few times to talk about her ordeal and always thought she was a bit OTT about it. Suspect LLB would be quite chuffed to be listed in their divorce. Would be quite funny actually.

Amazing! I've been thinking my hallway has been lacking something for a while, that could be it.

An interesting change is that bank staff don’t hide behind glass screens as much they used to. I wonder why this is? Less cash kept on premises? Barriers which can quickly smash down from the ceiling? A top down management “customer service” drive, with no concern for staff safety? Of course, the screens had a brief resurgence in 2020, with the ugly plastic ones which supposedly kept the figures favourable and Boris knew were bullshit, hence the lack of them in number 10

Another Changing Rooms disaster. It was Linda Barker and the owner's neighbours who thought it was a great idea to display the owner's teapot collection on shelves on floor to ceiling wires. Came back in the morning - the wires came away and most of the teapot collection was smashed.

Latenightreader · 17/09/2025 12:49

I miss when new release dvds and videos had free gifts. I remember t-shirts, boxes of chocolates, keyrings, and a limited edition box to collect X-files videos!

Weirdly I only saw a clip of that the other day. The shelves worked fine with the teapots until for some reason LB decided to put a load of heavy books on the bottom shelf. Cannot think where her head was, it doesn't flow at all tagging a load of books onto a teapot display. Which being an interior designer you'd think she'd know!

Oh the nostalgia! The 90’s and early 2000’s were the BEST. Definitely repeating stuff already said, but some of these are worth repeating:

The music - Cheesy Europop in particular, but I loved most music from those eras
Secret Bars
Reef (ok, you can find this occasionally now but not in the bottles with the ring pulls)
Vodka Jelly’s in pubs with those little swords
Test tubes (cocktails)
Video rental shops
Littlewoods (and their Christmas dinner throughout Dec - my mum and I would go Xmas shopping and always stop there to have it)
A local pub that did a 2 course meal for a fiver on a Monday - and it was a decent meal with good quality butchers meat etc
Nintendo 64
Being able to just go to places on the day - no pre-booking needed
Shopping centres being busy
COOKIE JAR (before Millie’s cookies bought them out)
Cheaper and easier to get concert tickets
Much less traffic on the roads
Point Horror books
Cheap train tickets (London for £10 return from the midlands for example)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Oh those were the days. Why do we have to grow up and time keep moving?

Tillow4ever · 17/09/2025 13:59

How did I forget “Fun House” and “Knightmare”?

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 17/09/2025 15:45

Newspaper sellers on the street.

Selection boxes in the shape of a Christmas stocking, covered in mesh with 6 or 7 full size chocolate bars and packets of sweets.

Phone cards for public phone boxes

Collecting stickers in an album and swapping doublers.

Pagers.

Basic mobile phones for texts and calls only.

Dial up Internet

Friends Reunited

Grolsch bottle tops on shoe laces because Bros did it.

The Jennifer Aniston Friends' haircut

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta i like bored panda, thanks for the link reading it now

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 17/09/2025 16:58

Enjoy @CalzoneOnLegs . Some of them are 😲.

CalzoneOnLegs · 17/09/2025 17:04

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta oh dear god …..the first one I thought no not that floor, and all the comments the same, that white room looks like an igloo and as for the rest of them so dated and even at the time awful, I don’t think I ever saw that show.

That white room, the all black room (I had to squirt at the screen to see anything), the hay on the wall, the chessboard floor. All so dreadful. Bet it cost the beeb a fortune in Dulux to redo it all after they'd finished filming.

Auburngal · 17/09/2025 17:21

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta I remember the 2nd one. Probably another LLB special. Also no 10's before, reminds me of Daisy and Onslow's bedroom from Keeping Up Appearances.

Shell suits

Never had one didn't they come in some horrible colour combos?

Auburngal · 17/09/2025 18:14

OMG the shellsuits brought me back memories of year 6 residential to Peak District on those abseiling, canoeing activity places.

Someone uploaded on FB. a photo of us at wherever we stopped at on the way to the PD. We were all wearing shellsuits, baseball caps - mostly back to front, doing the peace sign. There was nothing cool about what we wore. We looked like dorks.

Absolutely not, my lilac and turquoise one was the height of sophistication!

My mum was obsessed with underskirts, she used to wear full slips as well which were a bit like a strappy nighty. I don’t really understand why they were considered so necessary? Unless your dress/skirt was completely see through what was the point of them?

They make your clothes hang better, add an extra layer for warmth (depending on what they're made from) and stop skirts sticking to wooly tights and riding up when you walk 😁
