Poorly and after something to watch that’s gritty and going to pull me in!

If you like historic British crime dramatisations or gritty policing investigations (particularly from the 80’s & 90’s) old Crime Watch UK runs and odd crime documentary that shows the layers of different demographics and decades what could you suggest for me.

Feeling so sorry for myself as have a pretty awful chest infection and just want to switch off to something from my favourite (niche!) genre but just can’t find anything that I haven’t seen before.

Examples of which, Man hunt, The Red Riding Trilogy, I Fought the Law, The long shadow, Until I kill You..

@Orchidlover75 thanks
When my Amazon expires next week I will reinstall Paramount, I really liked Christian Slater as the dad, in fact the whole casting was impeccable wasn’t it ? especially young Angel and Matsuka …

CalzoneOnLegs · 17/09/2025 10:43

@EeewDavid I like it too. Episodes weekly, not so much !

Silverbirchleaf · 17/09/2025 10:47

Prime Suspect
Cracker

Both oldies but good to watch.

@CalzoneOnLegs yes the casting for Original Sin was brilliant, the young Deb too. I can't wait for the next season of Dexter resurrection. Have you seen breaking bad? That's another one I was hooked on after the first one or 2 episodes.

CalzoneOnLegs · 17/09/2025 15:58

@Orchidlover75 I saw BB when it came out so a long time ago now. I’m promising myself a chronological rewatch with El Camino and BCS, perhaps at Christmas as a treat

didn’t realise there was another Dexter resurrection 😀

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/09/2025 16:01

All the old Taggart and Rebus are my favourites.

YesHonestly · 17/09/2025 16:05

Has anyone mentioned The Wire?

May not fit the criteria but it is excellent.

Orchidlover75 · 17/09/2025 18:29

@CalzoneOnLegs yes another season of Dexter Resurrection, I cannot wait.
I've only watched a couple of episodes of BCS so far, I saw a post on fb advising of the best way to watch BB, BCS and El Camino, I will see if I can attach the pic, not sure how correct it is but I intend to watch it in that order.

Poorly and after something to watch that’s gritty and going to pull me in!
CalzoneOnLegs · 17/09/2025 20:02

@Orchidlover75 that is actually very helpful, thank you

I am also planning a similar strategy with Fargo as the timelines for each series were not in chronological order, the film stands alone, but fits in some place

where point 4 says get to the end of the series, I assume BB do you ?

edit again…..I think that makes sense, nice one thanks

CalzoneOnLegs · 17/09/2025 20:05

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER not being mean at all and Rebus is good BUT the young Rebus was very attractive and I just can’t see how he would have looked like the older Rebus…..

Papyrophile · 17/09/2025 20:48

The Lincoln Lawyer, on Netflix.

XelaM · 17/09/2025 23:45

I assume you have already seen "Squid Games"? Can't get better than Season 1

MarthaBeach · 18/09/2025 00:22

Netflix documentary about a kidnapping - American Nightmare - will absolutely shock you, very gripping. You never know who's telling the truth (until the end)
Also on Netflix, the documentary the Vatican Girl about the disappearance of Emmanuela Orlandi in Vatican City - is just totally jaw-dropping, so many twists and more and more revelations.

For British police fly-on-the -wall documentary, 24 Hours in Police Custody (channel 4) is excellent (and definitely gritty) - it follows a different case in each episode.

Have you seen Black Bird (on Apple)? Based on a true story & really well done.

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 18/09/2025 18:12

Thanks for all your suggestions, I have Covid and still pretty poorly so looks like I’m going to be in front of the TV for a bit longer.

I will say I have seen about 98% of the suggestions and the other 2% are just not my thing, spy, MI5, sci fi, glossy/high budget, too contrived or unbelievable.

I am a pain in the arse but I though I’d keep this thread going in case anyone else has any suggestions.

ITVX has reruns of Prime Suspect on if that’s any help.

Mumteedum · 18/09/2025 21:26

Have you seen everything on itvx? If you click on one you like and then 'more like this'...…?

Code of a Killer? About creation of DNA profiling

Mumteedum · 18/09/2025 21:27

It's very odd but quite enjoying the new one in itv with Andrew Lincoln.

Hidingbehindthechaos · 18/09/2025 21:42

When they See Us is incredible, harrowing but just amazing acting and tragic storyline, they had an episode after where the actors and RL people it was about were interviewed. One of the best things I have every watched.

Wire in the Blood I loved, different from most things.

FcukBreastCancer · 20/09/2025 11:44

I'll keep thinking for you. I need lots of tv suggestions too.

Candy... the Jessica beil one.

MrsGusset · 20/09/2025 14:11

Just a YouTube video that I came across recently & found interesting. It's a documentary about the Millenium dome diamond heist & the story of how the police tracked the gang & foiled their crafty plan. Made for an easy watch & an entertaining tale.

Hope you feel better soon.

Think it's still around on Prime or Apple etc, but the French series The Bureau was excellent. Subtitled so you have to concentrate unless you are fluent. It's about the French version of MI5 and really keep you guessing as well as interesting personal sub stories. Incredibly realistic and excellent acting. I loved it. One of the best spy series ever.

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 16/09/2025 13:43

Loved both of these.

I NEVER watch a TV series more than once (bar Cracker which I binge watched for a 2nd time a few years ago!) but I have watched the Fall 3 times, a lot to do with JD but the suspense and investigative scenes between him and GA are just superb!

I started watching "The Fall" on the back of these reviews, but I'm confused what's so good about it?

Completely unlikeable characters and it's pretty crazy how obvious the killer is being and that he is not being caught by allegedly this brilliant cop and that no one in his life reports him (I've just finished S1). Also it makes zero sense about how he comes across his victims or manages to enter their houses without any break-in signs and also what his motive actually is. I didn't like it at all 🤷‍♀️

MyElatedUmberFinch · 23/09/2025 15:24

I really think you’d like Slow Horses.
