Poorly and after something to watch that’s gritty and going to pull me in!

If you like historic British crime dramatisations or gritty policing investigations (particularly from the 80’s & 90’s) old Crime Watch UK runs and odd crime documentary that shows the layers of different demographics and decades what could you suggest for me.

Feeling so sorry for myself as have a pretty awful chest infection and just want to switch off to something from my favourite (niche!) genre but just can’t find anything that I haven’t seen before.

Examples of which, Man hunt, The Red Riding Trilogy, I Fought the Law, The long shadow, Until I kill You..

The Bank Job (2008 film) about the 1971 Lloyds Bank heist is good.

Or you could watch some old episodes of The Bill - its heyday for me was the early 90s.

ETA - hope your chest infection clears up soon!

The Pembrokeshire murders was quite good.

wingingit1987 · 16/09/2025 11:33

much more recent but absolutely worth watch is Slow Horses. I binged this on maternity leave.

Beauty and The Bester on Netflix. 3 episodes and jaw dropping.

jeremyclarksonsthirdnipple · 16/09/2025 11:55

Queen of the South Netflix..I swear once you start and get past episode 3 you are hooked!

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 16/09/2025 11:59

Slow Horses, The Sopranos, (oh that is soooooo good). Not sure where you watch it, but there's dvds too. Marcella - is v good too.

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 16/09/2025 12:03

Thanks everyone, I must be very picky, but the only thing the would have my interest for the above is the Pembrokeshire murders and I’ve seen it! 😅

I don’t like anything too contrived, over acted, unrealistic, with glossy/polished characters and really don’t like spy/MI5 type stuff (though have heard from lots of people that if you do, Slow Horses is incredible!)

I probably am a pain in the arse to watch TV with! 😅

Were watching Dept.Q on Netflix, set in Scotland.
Matthew Goode plays a sort of Dr House detective ostracized to cold cases.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 16/09/2025 12:14

If you have Netflix then Dept Q and Loch Ness/The Loch (I think this is also on ITVX) if you haven't already watched them. I also always go back to Waking the Dead on BBC iPlayer when I need a bit of great British crime drama.

Have enjoyed both of these.

Prime Suspect? Fictional though.

booksnpepsimax · 16/09/2025 12:17

Slow horses on Apple TV, new season comes out this month too so you can binge in advance!

placemats · 16/09/2025 12:19

I loved The Gold. Two series - BBC.

EleanorPeck · 16/09/2025 12:21

The Sailsbury Poisonings. The Moorside (about the hunt for Shannon Mathews). There's a very good Netflix doc about the murder of Jill Dando. Five Daughters (drama about the victims of the Ipswich serial killer).

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 16/09/2025 12:22

Missing Kenley on Amazon Prime is fascinating. It's a documentary series about a man who disappeared in 1992.

EleanorPeck · 16/09/2025 12:24

Appropriate Adult about Fred West.

The Shipman Files is a very good documentary on iPlayer.

If you're open to US stories, I highly recommend 'I'll be gone in the dark' about the Golden State Killer.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 16/09/2025 12:28

Am presuming you’ve watched Cracker?

EleanorPeck · 16/09/2025 12:30

The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies (superb performance by Jason Watkins). I also highly recommend Unbelievable on Netflix - limited series based on the true story of a rape victim and the hunt for the serial rapist. Very moving and powerful story. Similarly, 'Sambra - anatomy of a crime' is on iPlayer and is a French drama series about the real life 30 year hunt for a serial rapist told from different perspectives.

ZiaMcnab · 16/09/2025 12:34

Depending on how gritty you're comfortable with, some Scandi Noir might suit? The Bridge ("Bron" in Swedish) is excellent, although not sure where you can find that now but I've recently started watching Those Who Kill ("Den som dræber" in Danish) all of which is on iPlayer which is pretty dark (I can't watch it on my own, only when DP is there!) but incredibly gripping.

andfinallyhereweare · 16/09/2025 12:36

I just watched rebus and really liked that

XelaM · 16/09/2025 12:36

The Preppy Murder (ITVX) - honestly one of the most gripping documentary series I have seen

XelaM · 16/09/2025 12:39

Have you seen "Happy Valley" OP? It's so so good!!!

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 12:44

@Allromanticsmeetthesamefate
these I found excellent (they are fairly old so not sure how I missed them)

The Escape Artist
Injustice
both on ITVX

BauhausOfEliott · 16/09/2025 12:44

Have you watched Sherwood? It's excellent. Gritty and although it's fiction, it's based on some real life murders. Has a present day setting but events of the 80s relating to the miners' strike in Nottinghamshire are central to the plot.
