Poorly and after something to watch that’s gritty and going to pull me in!

If you like historic British crime dramatisations or gritty policing investigations (particularly from the 80’s & 90’s) old Crime Watch UK runs and odd crime documentary that shows the layers of different demographics and decades what could you suggest for me.

Feeling so sorry for myself as have a pretty awful chest infection and just want to switch off to something from my favourite (niche!) genre but just can’t find anything that I haven’t seen before.

Examples of which, Man hunt, The Red Riding Trilogy, I Fought the Law, The long shadow, Until I kill You..

Have you seen "Happy Valley" OP? It's so so good!!!

Oh yes ! I loved Joe Armstrong in that too, easily one of the best crime dramas ever made IMO

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 12:47

There is another excellent one with Claire Goose but It’s not up anymore as far as I can tell, it’s called Undeniable

CalzoneOnLegs · 16/09/2025 13:04

Sorry OP you said fact based dramas !
have you seen ‘Des’

Have you seen A Confession. It's on Netflix just now. Thingy from the office in it. (Menopause brain)

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 16/09/2025 13:13

Sorry Happy Valley, should have made it to my OG suggestions, also enjoyed Sherwood, cracker, the Preppy Murders and many of the other suggestions.

Dont mind a Scandi Noir series but I find often they can be a bit samey in plot…

As a suggestion though, “Snow Angels” which features much more gritty, real life depiction of Sweden, hardships, drug abuse but TW does tackle child abuse and abduction. I watched a few years back and I still think about it.

Martin freeman with Joe absolom playing Christopher halliwell, that is a truly excellent drama.

did you know the RL detective was sacked from the Police for taking the confession without the protocols, brilliant detective and a loss to the force, considering he found the whereabouts of Vicky Godden.

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 16/09/2025 13:15

A Confession was great and enjoyed Des too.

Vigil on iplayer, 2 series and strong in all the ways youve requested

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 16/09/2025 13:20

We are currently working our way through Endeavour, really enjoying the 60s and 70s vibe.
Eyeing up Foyles War also. Anyone like that?

BitOutOfPractice · 16/09/2025 13:21

I’ve just watched Department Q and really enjoyed it. It’s modern though so not sure if it’s the vibe you’re after. It was very gritty and gripping though.

Seen! 🙌🏻 Though Submariner husband scoffed through all the inconsistencies in series one…

Have to admit did find it quite weak TV, though do love SJ!

Edited

Watched, did enjoy but I think largely because I’m from Edinburgh originally!!

I just watched both seasons of Karen Pirie and enjoyed that - it filled a Dept Q hole!

HelenHywater · 16/09/2025 13:24

(Karen Pirie also Scottish!)

SeagullSam2027 · 16/09/2025 13:25

The Bay (Lynette White)?

efeslight · 16/09/2025 13:26

Unforgotten, with Nicola Walker, not sure what platform it is on.
Wire in the blood was good

Blue Lights

The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Harrowing but brilliant.

Whatabouterry · 16/09/2025 13:29

I’d recommend this if you haven’t seen it… Catching a Killer: The Wind in the Willows Murder.

Did not enjoy blue lights, it always puzzled me why, exactly my kind of thing on paper but just could not get into it!

Slow horses maybe does fit your criteria actually, as although it’s spy stuff, it has a flavour that is definitely not slick or contrived, it’s sort of grubby in a way (and in a good way). The main actors/characters feel like such real flawed ordinary people.

Forourfuture · 16/09/2025 13:30

Another one for Slow Horses :) it's so good.

I wouldn't call Slow Horses polished. Not the state of that office and THOSE SOCKS.

hellhavenofury · 16/09/2025 13:32

All episodes of Broadchurch is my go to binge :)
