Poorly and after something to watch that’s gritty and going to pull me in!

If you like historic British crime dramatisations or gritty policing investigations (particularly from the 80’s & 90’s) old Crime Watch UK runs and odd crime documentary that shows the layers of different demographics and decades what could you suggest for me.

Feeling so sorry for myself as have a pretty awful chest infection and just want to switch off to something from my favourite (niche!) genre but just can’t find anything that I haven’t seen before.

Examples of which, Man hunt, The Red Riding Trilogy, I Fought the Law, The long shadow, Until I kill You..

A place of execution is very good, think it is on Amazon

XelaM · 23/09/2025 16:25

The Victim (ITVX) is an amazing mini-series btw

These might have been mentioned already ... but if not:

I've been digging through some old stuff, & really liked What Remains from 2013. It's on iplayer & has David Threlfall as the jaded cop. Lots of well-drawn characters - & the girl from Baby Reindeer is the murder victim, whose relationship with others in the tenement block is revealed in flashback.

Another really good one was Until I Kill You, with Anna Maxwell Martin, based on a true story. It's on ITV3.

@EleanorMc67 I haven’t seen the victims thanks I will look for that later

there are at least three documentaries about the Canal Killer John Sweeney it’s a fascinating case, I thought Shaun Evan’s was far too nice to play him, he couldn’t get anywhere near how evil John Sweeney is.

Oh, Kelly Macdonald! Must watch this - she's a really excellent actress.

Which reminds me of another great series - Giri-haji. So disappointed another series wasn't made.

@XelaM
The Victim added to playlist thank you

@EleanorMc67 is that where they find the girls body in the attic and they were fat shaming her, it’s so sad

CalzoneOnLegs · 23/09/2025 17:12

@EleanorMc67 that actress is also in a series set in the 6o’s where she is a female police officer with ambition and intelligence but has to tolerate the misogyny of the times, maybe Inspector George Gently.

Can't think what series that might have been? She's played police officers in Dept Q & Line of Duty, but it wasn't those. Definitely her?

And yes, re What Remains it was the series where they found her body in the attic. It was horribly sad - she played the role brilliantly though.

CalzoneOnLegs · 24/09/2025 05:59

@EleanorMc67 it is Prime Suspect 1973 !

CalzoneOnLegs · 24/09/2025 06:18

@EleanorMc67 it all makes sense now ! I’ve just looked at some trailers and it is Jayne Tennison played by Stefanie Martini that has to fight the male dominated culture (so she is young Helen Mirren) it’s been a long time since I saw it but I think her and Jessica Gunning prove to be a really good team despite everything, and of course we know that she became a brilliant detective inspector eventually. Wonder where this is available to watch again.

AnotherSliceOfCakePlease · 24/09/2025 06:35

See No Evil itv, The Killing, Danish tv series, The Wire, which is amazing.

Papyrophile · 24/09/2025 14:15

The Gentlemen, but it's quite glossy and more than a bit farfetched!

Edited

It's only available to buy right now, unfortunately. I use the (free) JustWatch app to find out what's on where - it's great.

Dexter?

Memberofstaff · 01/10/2025 21:05

Have you considered podcasts? There are some brilliant ones out there. Try Bear Brook for starters.

Hinterland is one of the best crime fiction / police procedural shows I’ve seen. Unrelentingly bleak and serious in a good way, with stunning Welsh scenery
