What do you prefer when buying a house?

CVVFan · 15/09/2025 16:13

I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority group that prefer either houses that are ready to move in or that are liveable for at least 2-3 years. I never buy based on a vision/project/putting my stamp on it.

We’re selling our house in 4 years, and quite frankly as much as it’s liveable for whoever buys it, it does look outdated.

I think we’re already on negative equity, so we think we’ll at least need to refresh the kitchen somehow (and possibly the bathrooms) the question is how much work is it sensible considering we’re selling it? The whole pint of the remedial work would be to sell it faster and not get cheeky offers because to some it might look more like a project than a liveable house.

I always buy with the view I'm re doing the lot, as I rarely see anything I like style wise, and if I do, it's overpriced.

I only have two, but I’m kind of more of a lone wolf. I don’t always like interacting with people on a regular basis

So why are you so desperate to stop wfh and work in an office?

Because I miss day to day interactions. I always get along with my colleagues when I actually see them.

i think my friends (or lack of them) has more to do with not finding my people.

Ever? School? Uni? Previous workplaces?

Do you socialise?

I don’t always like interacting with people on a regular basis
is a bit of a contradiction to
Because I miss day to day interactions.

because if you don’t wfh, you will be interacting with people on a regular basis

is the move to London entirely so you work in an office?

Oh yeah I’ve made quite a few number of friends throughout the years, but either they all live in completely different countries (and thus are virtual).

I thought you meant IRL support. Which is why meant, I’ve stopped having regular IRL friends since I moved here.

i have the two friends that I see semi regularly, but I find one of them “taxing”.

and no, I don’t only want to move to London so I can have an office job, I also have an established group of friends there. I can also progress my career there.

The crux of the thread was about your current property and you left it that you were going to get cracking on £20k garage conversion and a tart up…. Has there been any progress over the last 5 weeks?

The overall home improvements are over the next few years. But in the meantime, I organised a massive party for my daughter, passed my probation, got (and build!) the larder, chose and ordered a new car, and booked a holiday that was 5 years in the making. So as much we haven’t moved much in the house front, we’ve moved in others.

Having read the thread,I can’t say I’m surprised to read that 5 weeks later no movement on the issue itself.

At least tidy up. Get the family involved.

I think there is an awful lot more going on here to mean just a tidy up could make any real impact at all.

And surely would be back to square one in terms of tidiness given no storage and hoarding involved

You said your teen daughter?

And I get the impression that you have channeled a lot of your dissatisfaction in to buying shoes and bags?

My daughter sure, but hers is contained and there’s no way she’ll get rid of it (and I get it, she’s a collector).

As for me? Not really. I mean last year I bought 3 pairs of shoes, and this year I’ve only bought two. This year alone I’ve thrown away like 3-4 pairs.

Bags, I bought one last year, and one this year. Before that probably only l bought one in 2023, and before that the last one I bought was 2018, so hardly tons of bags.

Ok OP, only you know if your house is full of clutter everywhere

I’m just saying clutter isn’t due to hoarding, it’s more around having nowhere to stuff normal amounts of belongings.

WFH full time during the school holidays must be pretty hellish in this set up surely?

Well our youngest goes to holiday club which runs at the school, so no real difference in that sense.

Yeah but they’re much older. And when my oldest was much younger I had a different job that let me do my hours whenever I could as long I got my workload done, so I could still spend my time with her.

ultimately we’ve decided to spend as little as possible while also making sure it’s sellable

Well at least get the internal wall. We also need to check if desk would fit in the spare room, it might!

our eldest has said he’s happy to sleep in the guest bed, but I know my DM keeps lot complaining about it, so probably best to not get I’d of his bed.

An internal wall in the already small garage?

what spare room? What guest bed? …. The room of the child heading to uni?

and your DM keeps complaining about what?
