A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I do admit I was always fond of Mandy but the whole thing about trying to help Eptein in jail is really a new low.

agree @ladybirdsanchez re property tax - mortgage interest can be deducted from US property tax - or at least when we last lived there. Our overall tax paid on all our income was 15 percent (leaving aside the 6 percent vat/sales tax)!!

Re Mandelson, me too. I was never exactly a fan, but he did have a refreshingly direct approach to wealth. Famously, he was, “intensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich as long as they pay their taxes”.

In a Labour government that was a reassuring philosophy.

But he did get too close to wealthy people for his own good. And I think he’s doomed now.

The really interesting part of this saga is how Starmer will come out of it. If he knew, and I can’t believe the FCO or Home Office or security services didn’t supply the Epstein information, the basics of which were already out there, then he may be on the end of a very sharp hook.

TheNuthatch · 11/09/2025 10:56

I think they are suggesting that the PM didn't know about Mandelson offering to help Epstein get out of prison until yesterday. That is the new info apparently.
Total horseshit imo.

Just seen the reference to the incident in Washington and Gateshead last night. More info here: Police investigation after 'incident' at MP Sharon Hodgson's constituency office | Politics News | Sky News

It goes without saying that these kind of tactics should be condemned, whoever they are aimed at.

Of course they should be condemned, it isn't acceptable whomever it is aimed at/at the receiving end.
But this is where we are now at in politics. Same with the Rayner graffiti outside her house.

Less than 24 hours after he stood up in Parliament and 3 (?) times stated he had confidence in him! Unbelievable.

Exactly horseshit, just trying to distance themselves. I bet Mandy never made it a secret

Appalling. I didn't know about this until I heard it in the chamber.

Yep, we all heard Starmer yesterday. He makes me sick 🤢.

Mandy himself referenced the other day that there were likely to be more embarrassing revelations about his dealings with Epstein to come out, so he knew there was a smoking gun.

Do we think Dame Karen Pierce is currently chuckling to herself? Her removal was a shock to most people, she had a good relationship with the Trump team and hadn't done anything to warrant being moved on other than the crime of being appointed by Boris.

SpottyAardvark · 11/09/2025 11:01

Starmer only has himself to blame for this fiasco. Everyone knows Mandelson’s record. For decades he has been a fawning sycophantic groupie to criminal billionaires. He was forced to resign from government twice because of his corrupt links to them. And now he will be forced out for a third time, which says as much about Starmer’s lack of judgement in appointing him as it does about Mandelson’s lack of integrity.

He lies, it’s total nonsense.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 11/09/2025 11:03

So he’s gone. Inevitable.

Right, over to you Prime Minister. Can we all see the vetting documents please?

Awful. These levels of political intolerance are taking us to dark places. Sharon Hodgson was doubly vulnerable, being on the left with opinions that are not tolerated by the left. I hope she hasn't been frightened out of politics. We need more blasphemous people who defy easy and lazy stereotypes - in all corners of the house.

Exactly. How many times does he need sacking ffs. Everybody knows who he is, except Starmer apparently.

Yes I think Pierce will be very pleased. She should have kept her position. Everyone knew that, again, except Starmer.

Chris Mason on BBC:

"The current attrition rate of senior figures in government this autumn is running at one per week.
Last week, the Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner resigns — knowing she would be sacked if she didn’t.
This week Lord Mandelson is sacked as the UK’s ambassador to the United States.
And we are only 10 days into the new political season.
Extraordinary."

I hadn’t heard of the attack on Sharon Hodgson’s office. As has been said, what an abominable, criminal act.

The graffiti, that accompanied the arson, says “328 days - blood on your hands”. Anyone know what that’s about?

twistyizzy · 11/09/2025 11:11

How many since Phase 2 started? Does further + faster = getting rid of more members faster?

EasternStandard · 11/09/2025 11:11

Autumn reset reshuffle side step going well

Maybe it should be back out the door

I've tried Googling "17 October 2024" which was 328 days before the attack took place but can't find anything that jumps out.

I'm not 100% on this, but I believe the 328 days is about Gaza and the death of a Hamas leader.
