A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Ohmyfeckingod! Giving an interview on Sky, Starmer has thrown Mandelson under the bus! It just gets better and better. Mandy will definitely have the knives out now. There is no way he will let that lie. New microwave with popcorn feature on order.

Starmer: 'Had I known then what I know now, I'd have never appointed Mandelson'
The prime minister has told broadcasters that he would never have appointed Lord Peter Mandelson to the post of UK ambassador to the US if he had known what he knows now about the extent of his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Speaking publicly for the first time since he sacked Mandelson on Thursday last week, Sir Keir Starmer explained that a "due diligence process" was conducted before he was appointed to the post in February.
"I knew of his association with Epstein," Starmer said.
"But had I known then what I know now, I'd have never appointed him."
The PM said the relationship between Mandelson and the convicted paedophile was "far different" than what he thought it was at the time of the appointment.
The information that has entered into the public domain in recent days shows that Mandelson was "not only questioning, but wanting to challenge" Epstein's conviction, which "cut across the whole approach that I've taken on violence against women and girls for many years".
Starmer explained that he did not know that when he gave his full backing to Mandelson during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, as the initial Bloomberg story was not published until Wednesday evening.
Questions were put to Mandelson, and Starmer said that when he received the answers on "Wednesday evening, late", he "did not find them at all satisfying", which is why the decision was taken to sack Mandelson.
There has been reporting that Downing Street or parts of Whitehall were made aware of the contents of the email cache given to Bloomberg on Tuesday, but Starmer insisted he did not find out the details until after PMQs on Wednesday.

CruCru · 15/09/2025 15:50

Paul Ovenden (Starmer’s director of strategy) has resigned. There’s a thing in the Times about it - he wrote a load of explicit sexual messages about Diane Abbott back in 2017 and they’ve been leaked.

I've just seen that too. Jeez, Starmer is playing with fire there.

Good god how many more can he lose and not quit over his appalling lack of leadership?

CruCru · 15/09/2025 15:53

He hasn’t got all that much to lose - his MPs are furious about Peter Mandelson. Realistically, he’s going to be out unless things change pretty fast.

Absentosaur · 15/09/2025 15:54

‘which "cut across the whole approach that I've taken on violence against women and girls for many years’

What? But Starmer you enabled rapists to serve time in female prisons, rapists to use girls’ facilities without question, and men to attend women’s and children’s domestic violence shelters, and rape crisis groups. Oh yes also you didn’t give a flying fck about girls being raped by Asian grooming gangs.

We could even touch on the political violence you enabled against your own (at the time), female MP.

So disrespectfully, Starmer, you’re a lying pos.

Omg. Typing a message and whilst doing so there’s more labour free fall into the abyss. Oh. Dear.

CruCru · 15/09/2025 15:57

I am not exactly Diane Abbott’s biggest fan (for various reasons) but she has been treated very shabbily by the Labour leadership. There’s no way senior government aides should be sending each other smutty messages about her. Labour are weirdly horrified by women.

Lutonsgirl · 15/09/2025 15:59

I don't believe a single word Starmer says.

Agreed. Much as I can’t stand Corbyn, he seems to be the only one who had any respect for her.

upseedaisee · 15/09/2025 16:01

And they had the nerve to to rage about Tory sleaze and corruption. So much for bringing back principles and integrity to parliament under their watch

EasternStandard · 15/09/2025 16:05

What a mess they are

Rivalled · 15/09/2025 16:14

A game of shag, marry, kill on Labour Party messenger? Well that’s definitely changing our perceptions of how Labour is doing eh?

Cummings engineered the downfall of Johnson and In the end the tories via partygate due to strategist scorned and revenge. Wonder if we’ll see the same in the Labour camp. What goes around!

Ooo now there's a thing. Knowing how smart Mandelson is, Starmer won't see it coming and won't be able to tie it to Mandy.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking. McSweeney is supposedly close to Mandy too.

Me neither. Nobody should be appointed until due diligence is complete, for a start. It's all fucking lies. Poor showing from a KC who will have had it drummed into him about not misleading the Court. Happy to attempt to mislead the public though. 🙄🤬

I would like to go back to the good of days of the 1990s-2010 before we started hounding people out of anywhere for debating…

Alas, social media allows anyone to post anonymously, which permits extreme views.

Imagine if, in order to post on MN, one had to do so using their real ID.

There would only be threads about cats etc.

You mean we had to show our real names?

I'd be silenced on both gender critical and political threads due to my work social media policy, I think (not that I think I'm inflammatory or abusive), which wouldn't be great, as I only post anonymously about such things, just in case (plus I don't have my employer linked on any SM other than LinkedIn, which I keep totally separate).

From the Guardian's politics live page:

Hard to overstate the dismay within government at this – lot of discomfort that Ovenden has had to quit for recounting what he calls a “silly conversation” eight years ago. Leaves Starmer without a speechwriter, and many other things, ahead of conference

Not many people outside Westminster will know who Paul Ovenden is, but his departure is arguably more significant than Angela Rayner’s, given the key role he played in No.10 and his importance to Keir Starmer.

Paul Ovenden going is big news. The highly influential director of political strategy, formerly in the comms team and then head of attack and rebuttal, was Morgan McSweeney’s main ally.
Bad news for No10 as Paul Ovenden was leading member of the reality based community left in Downing Street. Presumably why he’s been taken out now in a factional hit job.Would anyone really enjoy their 8 year old leaked WhatsApps being made public?Top Starmer aide resigns over explicit Diane Abbott messages in further blow to PM – UK politics live www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2025/sep/15/keir-starmer-peter-mandelson-labour-reform-tories-uk-politics-live-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&page=with%3Ablock-68c82ef48f08ede7e58a2d3f#block-68c82ef48f08ede7e58a2d3f
