A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

To be honest, there isn't a political party out there that gets my vote now; they're all shit.

EmpressoftheMundane · 12/09/2025 10:41

Mandy was honest. Starmer had the facts and made a poor judgement.

Yes, no paper is suggesting Mandy wasn't transparent. No 10 knew and appointed him anyway

I actually voted SDP in the last election. I live in a tory stronghold!

I struggle to vote with any enthusiasm too - although, I’ll vote against this govt with some enthusiasm!

Reeves is gambling on retail sales saving her. @twistyizzy this should be getting so much more attention from commentators, alongside the debt doom spiral, ridiculous tax regime we’re racking up losses in previous industry strengths.

Good luck with that.

My last buys have been on Vinted, and spending is scrutinised to the last penny.

I usually buy spring bulbs and something nice for Autumn this time of the year. Not this year.

I'd be surprised if that's just me. People are careful with spending because of the coming tax hikes.

EmpressoftheMundane · 12/09/2025 11:31

On the other hand, might as well spend before RR comes and appropriates everything you have saved as a “wealth tax”.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 12/09/2025 11:44

I'm tempted @EmpressoftheMundane .
TBH we probably can't do it for another couple of years when the Dcs leave school but we are at the point where we think we will liquidate everything and leave the country. We can't see a future for us. We were in my home country over the summer and had meetings with the bank and real estate agents and plan to have another visit just after Christmas. We are not the highest earners or billionaires but we are net contributers and I'd like to think we - and people like us- would be considered a loss. I had wanted the UK to be my country for life, and the country my children lived in for life. But I don't think so any more.

It's interesting what you say @twistyizzy about Fabianism ideals of managed decline. It's the only explanation for their wilful and deliberate fiscal destruction that makes sense to me.

Rivalled · 12/09/2025 11:56

most commentators think they’ll come after the pension lump sums, if I was close I’d be tempted to take it now, and then do that thing where you keep working and take your pension.

They keep hitting the same groups again and again - they’re not getting genuinely wealthy people and they never will because they can move and have excellent tax advice…although if they are running a business here they’re probably killing the profits of it!

Just finished listening to Political Currency.

All the joking about George taking Mandy’s job aside, they think they will pull in a career diplomat to plug the gap.

Interestingly, Ed was very critical of the DL election. He basically said he thought BP had been told or “strongly encouraged” to put herself forward when the best thing would have been to say that it was something for the backbenchers to sort out amongst themselves while the Cabinet get on with running the country.

He thinks this will now cause even more problems as BP will not be able to be as candid in talking to members about what she will do as DL without criticising Starmer.

He bemoans that Labour appear to lack the ability to “look round corners” and see these issues coming.

Worth a listen.

Thanks I will. And that scenario with BP is probably exactly what Starmer wants. The fact that one of his supporters will be DL won't probably help him in the end because she's part of the issue.

Rivalled · 12/09/2025 12:14

Interesting the extent to which Balls is able
to criticise - I agree with him @CaveMum BP too much associate and education secretary at best of times is on a unions collision course.

she’ll get anointed soon bet they’re pressuring Powell to stand down….

She certainly isn't going to be able to charm the electorate 🤣

Bloody chippy bitch charm is not her forte

Rivalled · 12/09/2025 12:17

It’s funny when I first read about her I was really
impressed but the major problem of reeves,
Starmer and BP is that they don’t come across as either competent or warm. Amazing they got this far…

Katypp · 12/09/2025 12:59

Has anyone stuck their neck out yet and said that Mandelson will be the issue that brings Starmer down? Haven't read the whole thread.

I don't think so.

It's not just Starmer who should be brought down; it's all of them. On the face of it, the entire Government is a shambles, but I'm past thinking they're simply incompetent, more like driven by an agenda which isn't exactly transparent - yet.

I think it is transparent if you look at Fabianism. I used to think it was tinfoil hat but it fits the Labour MO perfectly

Not looking good for Labour in Wales. Starting to get a bit scared by the Reform juggernaut now. And I blame Labour and the Conservatives. The conservatives can change things now. They need to. Obv Labour are long gone in people’s minds if not in reality (sadly). But they will be a dead party soon as they’re out of gvt.

Yes it feels inevitable now. I know there are 3 and a half years to go but in all honesty.......

twistyizzy · 12/09/2025 14:02

Just a reminder of Labour’s manifesto promise re:economy. Like all their tweets, it doesn't age well

My issue with Starmer going is who replaces him? They’re not going to call an early election so we will be stuck with (another) replacement PM and it’s not good for the country.

I sort of agree and actually a new leader may improve their fortunes so I'm sort of against them replacing him 🤣
