Same here. I’m particularly left wing and am much more centric but for me Labour is following the Tory’s to the far right and that’s not for me.

We need a centric government where we have some traditionally left wing policies pretext the vulnerable, education and health as well as some more right wing policies to make sure we have a functioning economy.

The irony being we can’t have a functioning economy without the protection of the vulnerable and ill and without good education. But that seems to get forgotten.

Instead apparently we get it by being racist fuckers and blaming minorities and the disabled.

And neither Reform or the Conservatives will deliver that. Similarly with Green Party or the LibDems. This country needs Labour and not just for a reset. Labour have to have two successive terms in Parliament.

Why does everyone equate change in Government with a super speedy delivery from the takeaway or a well known non tax paying website that references the longest river in the South American continent.

There will be some Muslims who are overjoyed ... radical Islam really detests idols of all and any form.

Horses and horseshoe theory go together nicely.

Germany could have fought for a lot longer (and had an atomic weapon into the bargain) if they had dialled down the ideology and replaced it with pragmatism. (See: Mrs Thatcher, AIDS).

I think with almost two generations having grown up under austerity and it's legacy, the word "nihilism" really needs to be remembered.

We have two generations who have seen their parents shafted by successive governments and who really can't see the point. This is what a 29 year old told me recently. Lovely lad - quite lefty parents. But an understandable sense of identification with being pissed off and unable to direct it.

If it was just the Tories that austerity and Brexit wiped out, I'd be happy. But it's looking like the UK will have to go as well.

Thank you for the recommendation. It’s on my list.

Jonathan Pryce and Kathy Burke are superb.

Beware though. There are two different versions of the TV series IIRC. The original, where each episode tells one woman's story and version of events. Then there was a repeat version where they re-edited and spliced all the stories together. It was nowhere near as good.

Here's why we never see women or children coming ashore.

I am deliberately posting the actual headline as the link summary just says "Migrant"

About 500 people are believed to have made the crossing on Tuesday in calm conditions.

Yes, I read that, how sad for that desperate woman.

Yes the book tells the story of each individual woman and the TV series I watched BBC was faithful to the book.

My son, now 24, was born thankfully under a Labour government and the difference that made to him regarding his education as a toddler with autism was fantastic.

All my children, including myself, have seen the difference with austerity under Cameron, LibDems, notably Clegg, and Osbourne.

Belated bug tax. I'm on a Greek island which is beautiful. Everyone on the flight joined the same queue for passport control
Weirdly, everyone had to remove our shoes when checking in, it's the first time thats happened when I've flown, and my bag was pulled aside for a drugs swab- we have hit duty free, so I brought plenty of painkillers.

Much as I have a lot of time for Thornberry, I really hope it’s not her. She’ll never live down white van man, is a London elite MP and apparently clashes with Starmer. She’s also the right wing choice. The right hate Phillipson because of VAT on school fees and she’d be a distraction. I hope Allin-Khan stands.

Allin-Khan was excellent at the hustings last time round. I voted for her then.

PickAChew · 09/09/2025 23:52

The populist right didn't quite topple the left in Norway, this time. I suspect this is quite reflective of where we would be if there was a general election in the next year.

The right really do hate Phillipson, including on MN. I see they are busy spouting the lie that she isn't really working class and that her father is Fraser Kemp, former MP for BP's constituency.

The origin for this seems to be some nasty racist little account on X. What a surprise.

Is there a female labour MP the right does not have a problem with?

Bloody hell @Evenstar .
Why can’t people see through it?

Evenstar · 10/09/2025 11:16

@cardibach I wish I knew, see also the flag idiots and people who vote Reform despite Farage’s grifting and multiple houses 😩

PandoraSocks · 10/09/2025 11:33

There has been an uptick of threads about immigration/flags etc. over the past couple of days on MN. Definitely trying to create some support for Sept 13, I think.

They can. They do. But they're racist so they stick their heads in the sand.

There's a line. On one side there are people who condone and support the likes of SYL. The rest of us, whatever our concerns about asylum and immigration, are on the other side.

Easy answer. No.

Longer answer - see also female Greens, female SNP, female LibDems . And also many female Tories.

I think there are a few exceptions of women who have said The Right Thing (TM) on certain issues.

Even then, I don't think Badenoch is accepted in the same way as Braverman and Patel.
