A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Macron’s not going anywhere. He should step down, but he won’t.

There’s a massive far left protest planned for tomorrow in France isn’t there? I don’t believe it was related to tonight’s vote. Either way I expect we’ll see burning cars, baton charges and rocks hailing down in town centres.

Yes, there's planned protests against the government on Wednesday, although not sure if that will happen now as the government has fallen?
Then a day of strikes on 18th Sept.

‘Block everything’: France braces for ‘shutdown’ protest on September 10

???

Also I confess I just don't understand the French system!

Neither do I. 🥴
why has Macron got to find a new PM ? I thought he was the PM ( I’m showing myself up now but what the hell )
Im woefully out of touch with how it all works in other countries.

Luckily Luton we have mumsnetters to explain it to us.
Perhaps there is something in that Watford water after all

It’s amazing he just keeps going on regardless. I feel like he’s been power for ages.

It feels a bit sad, Bayrou was right about the cost of more debt but no one wants to hear it there or here.

30% of France’s GDP spent on their welfare state. A sneak preview of our government under the Labour Party.

Wow !

depending on which stats we consider here in the U.K. ours is between 10.6 and 11.2%

TheNuthatch · 08/09/2025 21:11

So Macron is the president, also head of state. He gets to ponse around on the world stage, whilst his PM and government do all dirty work.

Both the far right and the far left want Macron gone, and nobody can agree on anything whilst the country sinks in ever increasing debt.

To qualify.
France’s welfare spending as a percentage of GDP:
Statista ( independent authority ) 30.65%
EU figures: 23.4%

Lies, damn lies etc…..

Kemi Badenoch will challenge the Prime Minister on Tuesday to work with the Conservatives on a plan to cut the welfare bill.

Speaking in London, the Tory leader will tell Sir Keir Starmer that his only chance of getting significant welfare savings through the Commons is by working with the Tories.

She will suggest a cross-party committee to draw up a savings programme “in the national interest”, inviting Sir Keir, Pat McFadden and Rachel Reeves for talks, despite her party voting against Labour’s welfare cuts in the summer.

Could prove shrewd….

Ohmymamamia · 09/09/2025 05:32

The issue with that is that, with so many people now in receipt of welfare, they won’t vote for cutting it? A poster on one of the “other” threads said she uses her PIP for “expensive gym classes, big bouncy blow drys and her nails”. Posters all agreed that that is what it’s for!! Honestly, that blew my mind 🤯🤯🤯🤯

That's great news! Welfare reform is so desperately needed. The only way to get it agreed is through cross party consensus, and the best chance is when Labour is in power and have at least some incentive to accept reality!

That would be a silver lining to everything the UK has suffered under Labour. I don't even care if Labour take credit for it. I'd just be happy to have Kemi Badenoch's thoughtful and sensible influence on it. (And we'll know that's what has happened!)

What's happening in France must surely focus everyone's minds.

CaveMum · 09/09/2025 06:20

To be honest Kemi should have backed the welfare reform last time round. It was the perfect opportunity to a) get something done about the welfare bill and b) box Starmer in.

I see that Mandy has been implicated in the Epstein book. He’s Teflon though so it’ll barely register.

EasternStandard · 09/09/2025 07:09

Starmer and co their usual sneering awful selves in response to Badenoch.

God I’m glad Labour are tanking. Revolting people.

You have to be a certain type of person to be a politician I think and especially rising through the ranks. I was just with a friend yesterday saying about the amount of people i know through my area who don’t work either they have kids are on disability or whatever. The area is awash with new cars on mobility sad to say. @twistyizzy I think you’ll like this one I was at Burghley this weekend little girl came on my stand with her mum I recognised her from last year they bought some things. I showed her mum the picture I had of her last year as she wdnt take off her new clothes from me. As she left I kept thinking god I know that lady it was Ros Canter with her little one 4 months pregnant who won again Sunday what a chump !

OMG I'm so jealous. What an absolute legend she is! To win arguable the toughest 3 day event in the event whilst pregnant 💪💪
My favourite part of horse sport is that its one of the only disciplines where men and women compete against each other, in same conditions etc.

Parsley4321 · 09/09/2025 07:44

@twistyizzy shes an absolute legend so tiny ! The amount of horses pulled up on Saturday the course was a tough one.

This is good stuff from Badenoch. I watched her interview with newsnight on this, she was good.

Typical sneery response from Labour, as Eastern said.
