And yet, you don’t take part in the rest of the chat do you. No birthday greetings from you, I note. No sympathy or condolences when I talked about my younger brother dying.

Just more claptrap about Angela Rayner.

You’re really not interested in being involved are you? You don’t discuss. You just bitchplop.

I haven't quite kept up with the thread lately. It moves so fadt.

So sorry to hear about your brother and belated birthday greetings.

Can’t you be sent to prison for non payment of council tax? And isn’t accommodation for asylum seekers paid for by the Home Office? They appear to be a bit confused.

It depends if the council sends out a reminder. Which of course they should do.

Racist spews out despicable racist tweet from the US.

I did a tour with some Americans around the Tower a while back. Post work entertainment. They were in aw of the history of it (or being polite) and one of the party remarked that it wouldn’t be a prison today.

I couldn’t resist saying that really the Tower currently didn’t have any prisoners but had done well for the Germans in WW2.

And at least one execution.

itsgettingweird · 31/08/2025 16:34

My fear is if anyone is imprisoned for not paying their council tax we are back to the two tier thing again.

You can’t argue with stupid unfortunately.

placemats · 31/08/2025 16:35

When I last visited the Tower, I paid reverential homage to Anne Boleyn.

Funnily enough I first thought was that these protesters have protested during working hours for days on end - so are they actually paying CT in the first place?!

Im not sure about racists having a low IQ - but they have extremely low emotional intelligence and limited critical thinking skills. They aren’t particularly good at statistical number crunching either! Nor history!

I agree with above poster than a small number of protesters will be going along to immigration protests to be heard. It’s Farage that’s leading them to focus on the single issue. But as far as homelessness is concerned there’s a lack of understanding in the U.K. from the electorate why the
homeless are in the streets and not hotels/hostesl. Homeless shelters don’t allow drugs and often don’t allow alcohol at all. Neither do a lot of supported living accommodations. Many homeless are addicts - some because they are addicts some become addicts because of homelessness. We have numerous well known homeless (mainly men) in my local high street. They choose not to use the shelters because they want/need a fix. They choose to use them when the weather is really bad. Some flit between using them a few days a week and not others. They find the rules being followed 24/7 52 weeks too much. There is so many complex layers about why these people are homeless and some struggle with the feeling of claustrophobia having to follow the rules all the time.

What we are missing is the services to help support these people in many cases rather than the physical roof over their head. Homeless people are also out in emergency accommodation which is also often hotels.

One of the ironies is that if you count homeless veterans as rough sleepers with an "armed forces background" then you find the majority are foreign born people who fought/helped alongside UK armed forces. If you include those temporarily housed but in unsuitable accomodation then, at least until recently, that includes Afghans and their families who had to flee after the UK leaked theiir details and found themselves stuck for years in hotel rooms. Which is deeply wrong, but not for the reasons the hotel protesters think. And attempts to move them into better accomodation is then met with complaints that "Afghan families are pushed to the front of the queue for social housing". But if you asked people if they think Veterans should be prioritised for social housing they would say yes.

How many veterans are homeless in the UK?

There may be fewer homeless veterans in the UK than you’d think – but official figures don’t tell the whole story

My "How and Why" book of the Tower of London quoted Macaulay as saying:

"In truth there is no sadder spot on the earth than that little cemetery." referring to St. Peter ad Vincula.

Carswell is obviously free to say as he likes but really, he’s not even in the country.

Is he here toiling with the rest of us? No.

Two tier don’t live here? Then ignore it. The country has enough to deal with than add in some import expat racism. Why does he bother, I wonder?

Agree. But that’s the thing with the politics of creating an enemy. People just fight an invisible war and often end up contradicting themselves.

If you look on his social media (dont) he gets very little engagement on US matters.
But when he posts about the UK he does his best to engage with Yaxley Lennon and Musk. Reposting their posts and then adding a dollop more racism.

I'm guessing that he's calculated that to improve his brand and increase his reach he needs to piggyback on their success. Monetising racism.

SerendipityJane · 31/08/2025 17:24

To be fair to the Beeb, the lead story for now is the warship deal.

it's hard not to imagine this really stuck in their craw to have to run that. Even they couldn't stick a Farage angle into that story.

I winder if Trump will have a hissy fit and threaten tariffs unless Norway see the error of their ways.

Meanwhile, Sky News reporting on protesters, accompanied by children, throwing punches at police:

https://news.sky.com/story/police-officer-punched-in-face-as-masked-protesters-with-children-march-through-canary-wharf-shopping-centre-13422487

Safeguarding ?

A few years ago, fairly locally, a load of mums (as described by themselves on local radio) made a huge song and dance about a rehab centre a few hundred yards from their school. The whole big noise was about protecting "the children".

With rather too much glee, the local police did most of them for not having the correct car seats, and when interviewed on the radio the local Inspector said that it was the polices job to ensure children were safe in cars when being driven and to act accordingly when that was neglected.

This was before I'd heard the expression "mic drop", but it was one of those moments.

LlttledrummergirI · 31/08/2025 18:06

I'm catching up in blocks today. Let hem withhold council tax. If they are working the council will go to court for an attachment to earnings order and collect it + costs that way. It will cost them more in the long run.

Then there is prison as an option.

I think it's also a little dig at pro Palestine protesters. The irony being that the original chant just says "shall be free" which can be/has been interpreted as being inherently anti semetic because who/what its free from is left unspoken. So he's reflecting that energy back by saying "shall be free from Abdul" except the fact that he has to specify a name/ethnicity to make the racism clear sort of disproves the point

I honestly don't know enough to state whether the original chant is bad/anti Semitic or not and that's a whole other discussion. But I definitely think it's meant as a Twitter style gotcha "aha you think my chant is racist, so you agree the original was". But it fails somewhat.

a little like how the flag shaggers must be biting their tongues as people are praising them for supporting the womens rugby. Or football ....

LlttledrummergirI · 31/08/2025 18:19

Then they are probably not paying it anyway.

I would suggest one of those jobs that they bang on about being stolen would be the way forward for them. Fruit picking maybe or litterpicking.

Many years ago when I worked in sales, a bloke kicked off because we wouldn't provide him credit for a home theatre kit. The only letter he produced for id was a parole letter and not on the list. His partner had a poor credit rating apparently (suspect i knew how, and who's it was in reality) and his shock when I suggested he have some of the bills put in his name rather than his his partner was something to behold.

This prince among men clearly thought that the world owed him. She was clearly terrified of him, and he wasn't happy that 20 year old me was telling him no. He's the sort of man who would be making this pathetic threat.

I suspect the bill is not in their name.

SerendipityJane · 31/08/2025 18:07

I guess if they aren’t working they get the payment through UC? There should be a system whereby the council can apply for that payment directly (or maybe it’s already direct?). I know you can pay housing direct or get the money.

In fact I’m just assuming CT benefit still exists as it use to in the old form when HB and CT benefit were paid separately? Eg you get a specific amount of CT benefit with the UC element? (Which was back in 2008 and when I last knew!)

SerendipityJane · 31/08/2025 18:24

I guess if they aren’t working they get the payment through UC?

Are they allowed to take you below the "amount the government says you need to live on" with fines ?

I'm rather regretting being so ignorant now. If only I'd broken the law in my years. I'd have learned so much.
