What would you call Epping locals who vow not to pay council tax after the High Court ruling?

Who are supported by the likes of Douglas Carswell

https://bsky.app/profile/twlldun.bsky.social/post/3lxp7lxyv6k2f

Is that question to any particular poster?

This is where the world learns how few protesters actually pay council tax

DuncinToffee · 31/08/2025 15:34

You could always carry a sign 'I am not a racist'. Ofcourse why you would feel the need to do that is the question.

This is the new part of the picture that did not exist at the point of Brexit.

The issue that now the EU has a goods problem with the US. Trump is really all about onshoring goods production.

If the US signed a goods and services deal with the UK which has more favourable terms (and on a current trajectory this seems quite likely) then the actual need of the UK to have closer ties to the EU for economic gain is far less. In fact it could stand to be better off in a number of sectors. That effect would/could aggregate over time. It’s also wrong to imagine that Trump is radically different on trade than his predecessors. How he makes his announcements and sets the stage is, perhaps.

Brexit was a foolish decision, but actually the net effect is at Brexiteers wanted. Really the EU would have offer something pretty good to make it worthwhile; being friendly doesn’t really come into imo.

I agree with much of what you say with respect to the US, and Trump.

They certainly seemed upset at racists being called out.

What do you call people who voted for Brexit because of immigration, then saw it massively increase immigration, and decide that the bloke that falsely sold it too them is the one to vote for - because of immigration...

Racism is truly the pastime of the stupid. And racism is simply disliking an entire group of people with shared characteristics based on what is in your own head.

It has to be simple otherwise it would beyond the ken of racists.

Like spelling and grammar.

Happy to - in the interim, please could you drop the ‘tone’. And if I am mistaken, and you don’t have a tone, please accept my apologies.

I do not agree with the notion that any Epping locals should withhold council tax. The posters comment is otherwise reprehensible, and yes, a racist post.

Karistyleaftea · 31/08/2025 15:41

There will be big news from Labour after the conference season I think .
Major .
I think we (the country) are doing a fair bit better than the right wing media would like to have us believe.
I also really want this Govt to succeed because I will never, ever forget the 14 years of Tory rule and what they did to us financially, and as a society.
Labour is not whipping up a storm of hatred even though you may not, and do not have to agree with their policies.
In my opinion.

Giving people labels such as ‘low-IQ racists’

Sorry, I'm not really into pandering to any racists. If you are a racist, and I upset you then good.

Did I upset you ?

You no more upset me than a piece of lint, or something temporarily stuck in my teeth.

I would call them stupid, despicable racists if they agree with Carswell's post.

What a bastard.

pointythings · 31/08/2025 16:03

With regard to the demonstrators outside asylum hotels, Douglas Carswell, the rioters and those saying they won't pay council tax - I think calling them thick racists is fine. The truth should have no power to wound.

Of course the people running the show in Reform are quite clever - manipulative, good at making money out of others. Not thick, just racist.

Evenstar · 31/08/2025 16:03

@Notonthestairs I don’t find that surprising, he wouldn’t look out of place in a remake of Deliverance

BIossomtoes · 31/08/2025 16:05

Can’t you be sent to prison for non payment of council tax? And isn’t accommodation for asylum seekers paid for by the Home Office? They appear to be a bit confused.

Maybe he'll get eaten by an alligator.

Although alligators would probably dislike the taste of such a fetid arsehole.

Yes you can. (It's one of the few debts that can result in imprisonment).

Before that you'd probably lose your house though, if you owned it.

This is where the world learns how few protesters actually pay council tax

Funnily enough I first thought was that these protesters have protested during working hours for days on end - so are they actually paying CT in the first place?!

Im not sure about racists having a low IQ - but they have extremely low emotional intelligence and limited critical thinking skills. They aren’t particularly good at statistical number crunching either! Nor history!

I agree with above poster than a small number of protesters will be going along to immigration protests to be heard. It’s Farage that’s leading them to focus on the single issue. But as far as homelessness is concerned there’s a lack of understanding in the U.K. from the electorate why the
homeless are in the streets and not hotels/hostesl. Homeless shelters don’t allow drugs and often don’t allow alcohol at all. Neither do a lot of supported living accommodations. Many homeless are addicts - some because they are addicts some become addicts because of homelessness. We have numerous well known homeless (mainly men) in my local high street. They choose not to use the shelters because they want/need a fix. They choose to use them when the weather is really bad. Some flit between using them a few days a week and not others. They find the rules being followed 24/7 52 weeks too much. There is so many complex layers about why these people are homeless and some struggle with the feeling of claustrophobia having to follow the rules all the time.

What we are missing is the services to help support these people in many cases rather than the physical roof over their head. Homeless people are also out in emergency accommodation which is also often hotels.

I did a tour with some Americans around the Tower a while back. Post work entertainment. They were in aw of the history of it (or being polite) and one of the party remarked that it wouldn’t be a prison today.

I couldn’t resist saying that really the Tower currently didn’t have any prisoners but had done well for the Germans in WW2.
