I guess if they aren’t working they get the payment through UC?

Are they allowed to take you below the "amount the government says you need to live on" with fines ?

I'm rather regretting being so ignorant now. If only I'd broken the law in my years. I'd have learned so much.

But if you get CT benefit within the UC credit payment I guess you aren’t being given that as part of the “amount you need to live on” part but to pay your council tax bill?

I have no idea how it works either tbh!

I just know they have a list of elements they have set a minimum for and the payment now covers housing, CT, childcare and living amount where as before you got HB, CT benefit separate to tax credits which included WTC and childcare element.

PandoraSocks · 31/08/2025 18:33

What happens is that people on UC/ low incomes apply to their local council to get a reduced or nil council tax bill. In the same way as single people get a bill reduced by 25%.

People don't get actual money to pay the council tax.

itsgettingweird · 31/08/2025 18:35

A quick check using entitled to calculator (did 2 ads and 2 ch neither working and no childcare) you get the UC amount and then you get a council tax payment. It then adds child benefit underneath - so I’m guessing it’s 3 separate payments but I didn’t see clearly how the CT payment was made. It didn’t giver the whole amount though - £36 of the £43 a week. (Roughly)

Ahhhh x posts. Off doing my research - which didn’t answer the question - whilst you answered it!

The radicalisation of children is scary

And yes, I think people can have their UC reduced to less than the applicable amount or whatever they call it these days, because of third party deductions for debts.

A relative had long periods of rough sleeping after he left the navy. He had severe MH problems probably PTSD from a childhood experience, possibly bipolar. My abiding memory is him staying at my parents for my wedding and the night before he was crawling in the floor insisting our dog was talking to him in Portuguese. Took some explaining to my bridesmaids! Manifested in alcoholism that led to him being invalided out after about 20 years service. He was actually provided with a flat several times but he couldn't cope and would just do a runner and disappear after a few months. He converted to Islam while in the navy but sadly it had no impact on his boozing.

That’s so bizarre, the withdrawn thing above was a picture and I did not request for it to be taken down

It was a lone laughing emoji before it disappeared???

@Efacsen there was a photo waiting to be approved, just a meme with blokes draped in England flags, nothing offensive

Maybe ask MNHQ what happened. The site is doing odd things at the moment

All good major news online reporting the excellent deal with Norway but the Fail insists on headling Angela Rayner. Tells you all you need to know.

Lib Dems eye Labour-held cities as they target 'seats not votes' | Politics News | Sky News https://share.google/W2Xtq2JUjUdhM7GM7

That's a poor strategy. Lib Dems should be focusing on retaining their hard earned seats in Parliament and let's be clear, the party has less membership and money.

I'm at a reggae festival today. Had noodles to eat and IPA to drink. Left a lasagne for DS1 and Chinese partner who are dog sitting. Loving multiculturalism.

itsgettingweird · 31/08/2025 20:27

One of my pupils with complex needs who I work with 1:1 for hours daily is Carribean. His dad gets me the most amazing jerk sauces and spices because I once mentioned how lovely his sons dinner smelt and that I love spicy food.

I love multiculturalism too. Especially sharing things and learning about other cultures. Their son loves egg and bread and I introduced them to the weird and wonderful recipe that is …. Eggy bread 😂

BIossomtoes · 31/08/2025 20:28

I saw that on another thread. I so hope the police come down hard on such odious people. Obviously that will be determined “two tier” in some quarters.

Yes that's right. So most council tax is in the hundreds monthly no matter where you live. I'm in band B and it was £95 a month in 2017, but is now £145.

If you're on universal credit and single it's £400 a month. Then there's electric/gas/water to pay for plus food. Single discount is 35 quid a month on the amount quoted above. There's no way anyone can exist on that.

DD1 and I were in Cambridge yesterday and had delicious curry goat from a food stall in the market.

I still remember school dinners during the year I was in the UK in 78/79 - hell no I'm not going back to that bland crap.

I do like good sausages though. And Yorkshires. And roasties. I want it all.

countrygirl99 · 31/08/2025 20:54

Love curry goat. And Thai food. And Japanese/Indian/Nepalese/Georgian/Malaysian/Italian food. Was hoping to try an Uzbek restaurant the other week but it was fully booked.

BIossomtoes · 31/08/2025 20:58

I’ve never eaten goat. What does it taste like?
