What do I eat when I’m dying?

226 replies

Okitsme · 20/08/2025 17:20

I’ve just been given weeks to live.
I’ve found it very hard to eat for the last couple of weeks and am forcing myself to eat a certain number of mouthfuls while in hospital.
If you have looked after anyone in this situation what things did they like?
I loved food and cooking

Hello everyone,

This post was by my Mum who sadly passed away yesterday.

Thank you all for your wonderful messages, she received a lot of support from Mumsnet over the years - it was a community for her in high and low times.

If it helps anyone else reading this fruit ice lollies were the only thing she could really stomach towards the end. CBD was a massive waste of time and money.

So sorry for your loss of your dear mum. Lovely of you to take the time to update. Take care xxx

I am so sorry @SpryWriter. Your mum sounded incredibly brave. Much as you would not have wanted her to have to be. Love to you and your family. ❤️

ChessorBuckaroo · 31/08/2025 01:25

My aunt smuggled gin and tonics into hospital for my granny. It’s All she wanted and she enjoyed them too. And I’m pleased she had them because she died slightly drunk and as well as drugged too! Nurses never knew.

In times like this us nurses used to get the doctors to prescribe it...the family would bring it in and we'd put it in the controlled drugs cabinet and give with the evening drug round x

Oh my goodness, the Op only survived 9 days after writing her thread. how terribly sad.

@SpryWriter

I am so sorry for your loss, thank you for the sad update that was so kind of you at this very difficult time.

I believe your mum also posted on the ongoing cancer thread, tho I don't think she posted often on it / returned to it recently - Thread #6, living with incurable cancer, taking ALL the drugs, and remembering our fallen comrades.
