What do I eat when I’m dying?

Okitsme · 20/08/2025 17:20

I’ve just been given weeks to live.
I’ve found it very hard to eat for the last couple of weeks and am forcing myself to eat a certain number of mouthfuls while in hospital.
If you have looked after anyone in this situation what things did they like?
I loved food and cooking

So sorry OP.

some suggestions:

scrambled egg
a bit of cheese and onion on toast
a drink of bone broth or stock
noodle pots - just the water can be tasty
sorbet
very tasty soft cheese!

thnking of you

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 21/08/2025 00:01

I was coming on to say mango sorbet, I see someone has already mentioned it. Gives you a flavour hit and the feeling of having eaten something. A sip or three of good quality Spanish brandy. Scrambled egg with smoked salmon. Leek and potato soup. Could you manage a small portion of chilli? With a sprinkle of mature cheddar melted on the top?
Basically anything that provides a lot of flavour without having to eat loads of it.
Have sprigs of mint in your water, slices of lemon, spark all your senses and enjoy the moment. Belvoir does some lovely fruit cordials, the lime is fantastic.
Enjoy what you can, my lovely (and if that's a single forkful of mash, go with that )
Sending you so much love xx

I just wanted to send you my very best wishes @Okitsme It sounds like you are facing this with great courage.

FrippEnos · 21/08/2025 00:15

hugs

My Mum had thick shakes and ice cream.

SquishedMallow · 21/08/2025 00:18

Ps just want to send you lots of love and a massive hug. Keep thinking of the little things (like nice and manageable food) these days need to be enjoyed. Definitely make sure you get some funny sitcoms on your device. Xx

CautiousPoster · 21/08/2025 00:20

I wanted to stop and firstly send you a huge hug.

I cannot imagine the emotions mixed up in this eating predicament amongst everything else. Especially if food is usually of great comfort.

I read the thread earlier and wanted to think of some foodie options that weren’t the run of the mill puree type foods but still based on the idea of small and either sweet or soft in the hope they might pique your interest.

How about:

*Creme Brulee?
*Chocolate dipped strawberries?
*Parma Ham and Melon bites?
*Little bits of slow cooked diced beef or lamb on celeriac/parsnip/cauliflower purée?
*Ravioli/Tortellini (a few bits with a nice filling maybe with some butter on)?
*Some kind of grazing food with hummus and tzatziki?

Sorry if none of this is to your taste.

You deserve to have whatever you want and I hope you find some enjoyment in the precious time you have x

I’m so sorry OP. I hope you have the very best care and comfort in the coming weeks.

My mums final eeeks she seemed to want to revisit foods that she maybe had eaten only once in her lifetime perhaps they were were associated with happy memories. making her Eggs Benedict and a bread and butter pudding. She managed very small portions of these. Her tastes used to hop and change very quickly. Today she’d love ice cream tomorrow she’d detest it and like previous posters there were times where she would get annoyed if anyone mentioned food.

I'm so sorry that you are not long for this World, Op.
When I was very sick I could hardly eat.

I ate the same every day ..
a spoonful of my favourite raw nut/oat/flakes cereal with milk
a crusket with avocado
vegetable and fish broth
water with a little lemon cordial
cups of black and green tea
cherries and sometimes a mandarin.
mouthfuls of ice.

Eat what you enjoy and what your body can tolerate.
Take painkillers and anything that relieves your symptoms
Eat with people you want to be with.

LaundryOracle · 21/08/2025 01:33

A big fat milkshake with all the toppings!

Tigergirl80 · 21/08/2025 02:06

I’m so sorry you are going through this. My mum had pancreatic cancer she struggled to eat anything with fat in towards the end. She had a lot of strawberries raspberries blueberries and blackberries with Greek yogurt. (((Hugs)))

SD1978 · 21/08/2025 02:12

Whatever you want. If you dont feel like eating, then don’t. The hospital can provide you with drinks instead if you’d prefer. Sorry for your news.

AussieManque · 21/08/2025 04:55

Really sorry, OP, hope you are well surrounded.
My grandfather basically decided to starve himself to death when he lost the will to live after breaking his hip, but he still enjoyed a lick of his favourite cakes to get the taste.
If eating/swallowing is difficult, you could take a similar approach to still get the flavours?

Zanatdy · 21/08/2025 05:33

I’m really sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I lost a friend this year and she had a good appetite still until a week or two before, then she ate soft foods like yoghurt, things that are soft on the stomach.

chipshopElvis · 21/08/2025 05:42

I'm so sorry for your diagnosis, just wanted to send love and I hope that you can still enjoy bites of food you enjoy. xx

Newusername1234567 · 21/08/2025 05:59

My dad died recently. For months he was having plain sandwich with salmon, and plain cookies. He struggled with hospital/hospice food a lot, even though i think it was really good. He managed sometimes few bites of “home” meals, otherwise he wasnt in the mood to have anything else. Can you have a drip to nake sure you get nutrition and hydration and dont force yourself too much if its not sticking with you.

i am so sorry for whats ur going through

Justawaterformeplease · 21/08/2025 06:07

I was struck by the word “force” in your OP. When my mum was dying we kept trying to chivvy her along and encourage her to eat
“normally,” not realising that the loss of appetite was part of the process of dying. Towards the end, she really liked those chilled coffee drinks (Starbucks-type but we got them from Lidl), which gave her a bit of energy without being burdensome.

So sorry you’re going through this. I hope you get to say all you want to say.

PlioTalk · 21/08/2025 06:11

I'm so very sorry OP x

Could you try sipping on an electrolyte drink? You can buy the powders in lots of flavours - they'll get some vital salts and minerals into you, and it might perk you up a little if you can't bear to eat.

Letsgoforaskip · 21/08/2025 06:14

I am so so sorry and sending you love.
My father found it very hard to eat for months when he was ill and some people pressured him to eat, which was well meaning but a shame. He sometimes liked meringues because they tasted sweet and dissolved easily.
As others have said, you have what you want when you want it 🥰

Waterweight · 21/08/2025 06:34

Traditional foods/desserts

My "last meal" would probably be pies/sausage roll + caramel slice (millionaires short bread) but I get that your not up to eating I think you should just stick to liquids maybe ? Cordials/tea/coffee/juice/ ect.

DamnUserName21 · 21/08/2025 06:36

Fuck nutrition! Eat whatever you fancy (if anything) or have never tried before and can tolerate.

Seabreeze18 · 21/08/2025 07:14

I agree with the poster above! I don’t think nutrition is important at this stage. Just fluid! So eat whatever u crave!
for me it would be miniature cakes as I love cake! But it may depend on how hard it is for u to actually swallow.

fil had strawberry jam smeared on his lips so he could lick it off during the last few days.

sending u the biggest hug!

BreezyPeachGoose · 21/08/2025 07:24

What about being given smells and taste options, I wonder if they'll trigger some nice memories for you.
