What do I eat when I’m dying?

Okitsme · 20/08/2025 17:20

I’ve just been given weeks to live.
I’ve found it very hard to eat for the last couple of weeks and am forcing myself to eat a certain number of mouthfuls while in hospital.
If you have looked after anyone in this situation what things did they like?
I loved food and cooking

So sorry, OP ❤️ I think in your position I’d eat whatever the hell I wanted.

When my grandfather was EOL, all he wanted was vanilla ice cream with chocolate and raspberry sauce, Ambrosia custard pots with whipped cream on top, those miniature burgers from Iceland (he had them once at a friend’s birthday buffet and couldn’t stop thinking about them😂), cheddar cheese with pickle, and cider! My kind of diet!

GreenFritillary · 21/08/2025 18:48

wholemeal bread, toasted, crusts off, pate, liver or smoked salmon, or creamcheese, topped with slices of tomato with fresh black pepper, toasted again, cut into fingers.
ice cream, best quality.
creme brulee.
milk shakes eg banana, egg, honey, milk.
tiny fruit salads, very carefully prepared.
a slice of streaky bacon, fried carefully to be crisp all over.
advocaat or egg nog
cauliflower cheese
But fluids more important than solid food.

Thank you so very much for your replies. What brilliant ideas. I’m going for things I’ve not allowed myself over the past few months. I had no idea there was anything wrong until Mothering Sunday and then used nutrition to try a get control. I was the chemo poster girl and I think I clawed back about 5 weeks but I was sooo strict with what I ate.
I’m going home today, my sons and daughters in law are arriving this afternoon and I am going to concentrate on joy and gratitude along with weak spritzers (?), smoked salmon, soft fruit - but not bananas- and homemade soup that my husband is going to learn to make!
Thank you all for your best wishes as well. I am fine with it, it’s the pain it causes others that is hard to bear. Xx

If your husband isn’t that successful with learning to make soup; M&S soups from the chiller are a pretty good substitute.

I hope you find some pleasure in what ever you manage to eat, and can focus on the time with your loved ones. This must be so surreal, I’m so sorry

I hope this is helpful I remember a young man Rylan Riley and he created a recipe book inspired by his mother. It’s called Life Kitchen and he was inspired by his mother and how her tastebuds changed and he seems to have created a range of flavour combination for when in treatment and pallative care. See maybe he is on youtube but he has books and recipes that have taste at the heart of them

You should eat whatever you want to eat whenever you want to eat. My gm ate crisps every day before she died because that was something she had never allowed herself.

The best gift you can give your family is to try not to worry for them and just live in the present. They will suffer but they will survive leaning on each other. Just think about now.

Cheesyandpickled · 21/08/2025 22:48

Im so sorry. A lot of people at this stage tend to find small amounts of light food such as yogurt and ice cream easier to face. Milkshakes also seem to go down well. It is different for everyone tho and can depend what the health issues are. I hope you are comfortable. Sending love 💐

Autumngirl7 · 21/08/2025 23:30

A friend's father defied all odds to hang on until his daughter got married, after which he declared he would now live on champagne, smoked salmon and morphine. He did, dying surrounded by family two weeks later. I'd maybe change the salmon for something else. Also suggest if possible finding someone who can give you access to cannabis oil. It has helped many people I've known who have been acutely unwell. Good luck to you.

Okitsme · 22/08/2025 10:28

Thank you all again.
I’m going with protein drinks made into pint milkshakes 3 times a day and any thing else is a bonus. I’ve warned my family that I’m going to pick off their plates!

Maybe you could ask your family to make you some protein ice cream, there are nice recipes online

This is a good idea. If you are planning to use protein powder I recommend vegan protein. I found it’s gentler on the digestive system compared to whey.

I’m sure your family will be more than happy to have you pick at their plates ❤️

Hello everyone,

This post was by my Mum who sadly passed away yesterday.

Thank you all for your wonderful messages, she received a lot of support from Mumsnet over the years - it was a community for her in high and low times.

If it helps anyone else reading this fruit ice lollies were the only thing she could really stomach towards the end. CBD was a massive waste of time and money.

x2boys · 30/08/2025 18:57

Sorry for your loss 💐

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 30/08/2025 19:02

I am very sorry for your loss. I may have exchanged messages with your mum over the years.

Sending love and sympathy.

May your mum rest in peace. I'm sure MNet would arrange a wooly hug (crotcheted) blanket or square or cushion cover if you get in touch.

With love and prayers (if you accept them).

@knottylocks

@SpryWriter Thank you so much for letting us all know, I have to say I think it was both brave and sensible of your mum to ask about this... and even in your own troubles you have shared what worked for her. Your mum has left a generous legacy with you as her child. Please look after yourself in the coming weeks and know that the support of Mumsnet will be here for you, should you need it.

PermanentTemporary · 30/08/2025 19:20

What do you fancy? Soups? Pasta ? Something easy to digest. Now is the time for caviar if that's what you want !
(I'm very sorry)
