Did anyone see it? Northbound between Oxford and Cherwell Valley at around 1330?

traffic stopped, entrance blocked, loads of motorbikes, black SUV’s, Black range rovers all with blacked out windows, about 30 vehicles, plus a helicopter.

Wonder who it was for? I assumed Royalty but I’ve seen them before in London and on motorways and the entourage was nothing like this, no helicopter either.

i once went past a big leafy layby that was blocked by police motorbike outriders at either end, near Frosterly , in Durham.

I assumed it was Princess Anne to be honest, not sure why.

I just hoped they’d got some food, as there was a burger van there once.

Probably not when they were there though, but it’s a good image, everyone enjoying a hot bacon sandwich or burger.

I also remember a time when toilets existed in public areas, such as those.
Not now of course

I don’t know how we all manage. No wonder we are stuck at home watching interminable quiz shows on terrestrial TV, or scrolling through Prime looking for a free movie worth watching, instead of the D movies they now provide

It’s so obvious where he’s staying the police presence is immense. As someone who lives very locally, it’s a quite annoying

Maybe he’s Actually at the Slough Travel Lodge. Clever Americans , clever!

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 10/08/2025 19:18

I’m going to talk into my sleeve for a few days - just to help out JD Vance’s crew, suggest you all do the same?

He’s going to Scotland for some reason

Yay lucky us

OtherS · 10/08/2025 19:24

Looks like he brought some hideous US trucks over with him, I'm not sure we have that many Chevrolets in the UK. Or maybe those are the ones Trump's been trying to convince us to buy? Probably do work fine on our little roads if you have the police close them off before you drive down them. Bet Vance is rather more comfortably ensconced in the Range or Merc though.

It's just such a silly, willy-waggling way to travel though! The late Queen definitely travelled with significantly less, even when her route and destination was publicly known ahead of time. Though in fairness, a lot more people probably want to attack Vance than they did her.

Is that JD or Usha?

It doesn't really work when someone tries to piggyback onto an already perfect one liner.

IesuGrist1975 · 10/08/2025 19:28

Oooh I’ve just emailed to request to cancel my Hampton Court Membership and now I’m going to use Vance as my easy excuse as to why instead of the really truth which is that we’ve only been once in a year 😂

PrincessofWells · 10/08/2025 19:28

We don't want toxic arses like that in our county . . . hopefully he'll get fed up with our 'smallness' and piss off to whence he came.

CountryMouse22 · 10/08/2025 19:29

According to the Guardian, he is staying at Dean, hamlet near Charlbury. I bet the locals are not happy. Apparently, the locals are miffed at having to leave their name and address! I suppose they can only ask. A certain ex PM lives there too, of Tory persuasion.

menopausalmare · 10/08/2025 16:46

It was Vance. He passed through Sunbury, Ashford, Staines earlier with helicopter escorts, the full works.

it's so ridiculous.

Well that changed course all of a sudden!

Are we moaning about the TV now?

Feetofanurse · 10/08/2025 19:32

On Friday at 8am on the M25 southbound I watched in shock as Vance and his cavalcade held up the rush hour traffic. I saw later on the news that he had an important fishing trip.

I think op is complaining about the lack of accessible toilets.

I can see why toilets came to mind when talking about Vance . . .😂

FatOaf · 10/08/2025 19:43

He's staying in Charlbury.
Sooooo many secret service agents there, looking very easy to spot.

Have the locals been warned there are several armed men patrolling the area who aren't subject to British or international law?

I hope he is not hoping to fish in the waters near Dean, awful pollution in our waterways thanks to Thames Water.

So low key wouldn't have known he was here.
What an absolute prick full of his own importance.

A good few years ago, DH and I were staying at the same hotel as Condoleezza Rice. If she’s been there alone I doubt anyone would have noticed her, however her security were extremely visible, and almost comical at times, and this drew attention to her

Regardless of what you think of JD Vance (I can't stand him), remember that this is not down to him. The US State Department and Secret Service have a very large budget for overseas trips and they are determined to spend it. The level of OTT would be the same for Obama or any other US President/VP that you might like better. I remember GW Bush arriving in Australia for some summit or other and one of the first things he did was apologise for the disruption to a major city that he knew was caused by any trip that he made.

Many years ago, Ronald Reagan visited the place where I worked. At one point the schedule called for him to get out of the car and wave to the crowds for 10 seconds outside the entrance. A block of 50 flats overlooked the spot, with a decent sniper view, so everyone was evacuated from there for 2 nights beforehand and housed in nice hotels. At the back end of the building was a car park exit that crossed a pavement, where a couple of rather rickety "slalom" barriers had been installed to stop people emerging too quickly and knocking down pedestrians - these were removed because they would have added 5 seconds to the Presidential ambulance's exit time, in case he had been shot and wounded or was having a heart attack or whatever. After Reagan's visit they were replaced with a considerably more solid arrangement, all at the US taxpayers' expense.

What if the residents of those flats just refused to go? Under what law can they then be dragged out of their own homes?
Also, second question. These motorcades, do they obey the speed limits? I see no reason they would have for speeding.

I really can’t see an issue with a vice-presidential motorcade doing 75mph on the motorway. The roads are cleared.

The Americans are probably used to living in a country where people can and do openly carry guns .... they think they a public person is constantly at risk of assassination. Meanwhile here in the UK most of us have never seen a real gun close up let alone held one.

LemondrizzleShark · 10/08/2025 16:22

JD Vance?

Very likely. When Trump came to visit his Aberdeenshire gold club a few weeks ago(just because he wanted to,not an official State visit), it was a whole carry on of a whole cortege of huge cars, helicopters, road closures and lots of police having to be there. Much more bother than when the Queen (or King nowadays) arrives in Aberdeen to go to Balmoral Castle.

Galatine · 10/08/2025 20:18

MJ1980 · 10/08/2025 16:45

Why are our tax payer police resources being used on this person? Why are they not bringing their own security/using private security uk based?

Do you really want dozens of trigger happy Americans roaming around the Cotswolds?

catmothertes1 · 10/08/2025 20:20

Milliejacksonhouseforsale · 10/08/2025 19:18

Yay lucky us

How much did Trump's visit to his gold courses cost us already?

murasaki · 10/08/2025 17:30

I read that the secret service people were going to local's houses asking for details of everyone who lived in the house. And were quite reasonably told no. I do hope that's true. He really thinks he's more important than he is.

In fairness, they'll do checks on them anyway and ask the British police for their details as well, so unfortunately, saying no won't get you anywhere.
