Did anyone see it? Northbound between Oxford and Cherwell Valley at around 1330?

traffic stopped, entrance blocked, loads of motorbikes, black SUV’s, Black range rovers all with blacked out windows, about 30 vehicles, plus a helicopter.

Wonder who it was for? I assumed Royalty but I’ve seen them before in London and on motorways and the entourage was nothing like this, no helicopter either.

What makes his elected position so damned important anyway?

'One heartbeat away from the presidency.'

And some of us are old enough to know that isn't just words.

Definitely more trump business than state business. Just a few meetings meaning he can use the perks

I was listening to a list of Vance “holidays” since becoming VP. It was so lengthy I assumed it was a parody but every trip I checked out was genuine, including the one where he had state engineers redirect waterways so he could go canoeing on his birthday. He’s every bit as grifty and as lacking in any form of principles as Trump. He is even more willing to plough “blood and soil” nationalism.

A great prospect for 28, not someone who will ever give a shit about Europe beyond free holidays.

Vance, like him or not, has been elected to public office and gets the protection deemed appropriate for his position.

Harry holds no public office and therefore has no automatic right to protection - the same as every other member of the RF except the K&Q and those in the direct line of succession.

Not on private visits, that would be usual protection and not a ludicrously hefty bill to the local taxpayer.

The circus in the Cotswolds is out of line with other private visits by senior state officials both from the US and elsewhere.

Disneyworld, Highlands, Hampton Court, Cotswolds, all the same to JDV, theme parks for the entertainment of our American cousins. If I had to choose the company of JDV or Harry, I'd choose Harry. I've a strong suspicion that even Harry's UK family might do so.

Regardless of what you think of JD Vance (I can't stand him), remember that this is not down to him. The US State Department and Secret Service have a very large budget for overseas trips and they are determined to spend it. The level of OTT would be the same for Obama or any other US President/VP that you might like better. I remember GW Bush arriving in Australia for some summit or other and one of the first things he did was apologise for the disruption to a major city that he knew was caused by any trip that he made.

Many years ago, Ronald Reagan visited the place where I worked. At one point the schedule called for him to get out of the car and wave to the crowds for 10 seconds outside the entrance. A block of 50 flats overlooked the spot, with a decent sniper view, so everyone was evacuated from there for 2 nights beforehand and housed in nice hotels. At the back end of the building was a car park exit that crossed a pavement, where a couple of rather rickety "slalom" barriers had been installed to stop people emerging too quickly and knocking down pedestrians - these were removed because they would have added 5 seconds to the Presidential ambulance's exit time, in case he had been shot and wounded or was having a heart attack or whatever. After Reagan's visit they were replaced with a considerably more solid arrangement, all at the US taxpayers' expense.

Aww, George W Bush always seemed fairly decent. I don't agree with his politics or the wars he started, but I remember watching a documentary about the Queen visiting the USA, and the pictures he paints, and his demeanor on that and on things I've seen him on afterwards improved my opinion of him.

Was that before or after he had been shot? You can understand why the Yanks are more twitchy about these things.

John Lennon, Reagan and the Pope were all shot in a fairly short period of time. And I think Reagan was more seriously injured than we were told at the time.

Eh? So if we ignore the wars that he started - presumably based on the same fraudulent dossiers that Blair used, which killed huge amounts of innocent people, he seems like quite a decent sort because he smiles, remembers his pleases and thank-yous and speaks gently?!

Yes, he seems like a vaguely normal person, although all politicians are a bit weird, even the ones you think you like the look or politics of. He was actually qualified to fly fighter jets and after leaving office he lived in a surprisingly normal-sized house.
